Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 01, December, 2008, 05:36:00 AM
Guessing that feedback for the editor itself is, well, everywhere else, and nobody's really though about anything here, so...

I suppose this would be a good place to get some of the other people making this place looking prettier!

I'm sure Atrius is busy enough, racking his brain over the games code so we can have our nice shiny editor, so I suppose it's up to the rest of us to pretty this place up.  Or rather, give him some skins to work with.

I'm not exactly sure how to do it for invisionfree, so anyone who's willing to inform me, send a PM, 'k?  That way I can help contribute, too.

Anywho, here's some suggestions for some skins.  We don't need to get ALL of them done, of course.  That'd be WAY too much work.  But it'd be nice to have some more options, don'cha think?

Just an idea but you could use clippings from the official wallpapers for some of the themes, eg. garet, felix, piers, venus

Indeed.  Hell, that's probably what's going to happen.  I wish though that they had made official art for NPCs other than Briggs, such as Feizhi, Maha, and Hamma...  It'd be kinda cool if we could make a wallpaper featuring all 5 Jupiter adepts (those three +Ivan and Sheba).

The theme on the board is done using a CSS style sheet, and some separate settings for most of the images.  I'll gladly post the default style sheet code for you if you want.

Actually, I don't understand the code.  It's been 2-3 years with now computer science practice, so I've gotten so rusty I don't know if I can even do 'hello world'.

Role:
I think i can make up some simple style changes aka start with the simple color styles and work from there. I just need your input on what you think good colors would be for the presets.

You can change these things
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g155/jdmj44/cssimg1.jpg (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g155/jdmj44/cssimg1.jpg)
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g155/jdmj44/cssimg2.jpg (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g155/jdmj44/cssimg2.jpg)

Note: Every other post is a different color
size changes are possible. If you have any questions just ask.

I think it would be a good idea to have a hacking chat room. I can't think of a reason why at the moment, (lol) But I just think it would be great.

Feheizi's a pain to draw.

Do you guys want some of my more... chibi stuff or more, you know, sophisticated stuff? I could draw a chibi jupe theme, or a more sophisticated version.

OR BOTH. (bum bum bum)...

I started working on it today. I'll post the images ASAP.

I'll add a few smilies as well.

I'm working on a Jupiter theme. All I've got are these so far:
(http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x33/heimdallinc/newposts.gif)New Posts
(http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x33/heimdallinc/nonnewposts.gif) No New Posts
(http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x33/heimdallinc/bkgd.jpg)The Lololololol background. I NEED INSPIRATION.
But I'm working on a banner. It's really quite cute. Ivan's working on a hack on a laptop, and Hamma's watching over him. And a badass Procne's in there too.

Colour scheme? Probably just a set of light purples... nothing too crazy.

I always like to draw some of the more background characters (King Hydros and the like, with Eoleo as my favourite)

For a Jupiter-based theme, is there nothing you can do around the Reveal colour scheme?

Hmm... reveal... I don't really know. I'm not much of a webmisteress, but maybe I can think of something.

Maybe a black backround, and a little reveal bubble for the banner?

A good idea for a Generic theme would be a Golden Sun menu-style.. Like how the menus in Golden Sun are.

I don't think I'm explaining enough. I'll post later about what I mean unless you can understand. xD

Hmm, I think that if you're going to do a Chibi version, you should do a non-chibi version as well... Not everyone likes chibi, after all.

Good work so far... too bad you can't go in and customize things individually, though.  That'd be kinda fun to do...

Anywho, I look forward to your official release of the skin.  And your eventual adding of Feizhi to it.  Because you know I won't leave you alone until you do.

Well, I'll post little things here and there as I get the pictures up.

And I'll do a non chibi version as soon as I'm done with this one =D

For example, the reveal themed banner:

And even though it's not very creative on my part...
(http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x33/heimdallinc/online.gif) Online
(http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x33/heimdallinc/offline.gif) Offline

And be patient, I'll find a way to put Feheizi somewhere. SOMEWHERE...

Hmm... I don't think we can have multiple themes.  I do like the idea of the theme being Jupiter though, since out of all the elements, their abilities most remind of hacking.

That's rather tall for a banner, Charon.  I'm thinking it should probably be 200 pixels high maximum.
Title: Feedback for the forums?

Whoops. As I said, I suck at webmastering, so I'll fix that.

Just a simple resize... and... VOILA!
Now it's 200 pixels high. eep I hate my Hamma...

And I was thinking, although I have nothing against a Jupiter theme (obviously), couldn't we have a different element for, lets say, each 3 months? We don't have to go with the seasons, but we could design a new theme every 3 months to keep things interesting.

Thoughts on Feheizi - maybe a birthday Icon will work with her...
Title: Feedback for the forums?

Hmm... If you could find a way to make it wider, that'd be good, too.  It'd need to be something that'd fit across the length of the screen, and your siggy's longer than what you've done.

Oh, by the way... What Resolution should we plan for?

I'm 1600x1200, but most people haven't started using that high resolution yet...  800x600 isn't used much anymore, and 1024x768 is starting to go out of style for larger resolutions as well...

Your thoughts?
Title: Feedback for the forums?

I think I use 1440x960...

And I'll be working on the Feheizi button soon...

How is 1024 TOO WIDE?!

NOBODY, not even LAPTOP users use 600x800!  It became obsolete years ago!  What's more, everyone's starting to move to hi-def...
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Atrius on 13, February, 2009, 07:23:00 PM
A decent number of people still use 1024x768 monitors, and there needs to be room for the margins at the side of the page, and scroll bar too.
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 13, February, 2009, 07:27:00 PM
True, true, but you should still be able to get away with 900...  That leaves 124 pixels for margins and what not.
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Atrius on 13, February, 2009, 07:41:00 PM
700 is perfectly fine though.  It even leaves space for the unfortunate people that are still stuck with 800x600 monitors.
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 13, February, 2009, 07:57:00 PM
And it leaves me with 900 wasted pixels...

Heck, I've got a basic compy, one you can get from walmart, and I can't even go as low as 800x600...  Oh well, no use crying over it.

Out of curiosity, what's the resolution range for everyone?  Mine is 1024x768 to 1600x1200, though for some reason, everything looks HUGE in any resolution smaller than the one I've got. O.o
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 13, February, 2009, 08:04:00 PM
So is it 200x700 or not? Whatever, I'll go along making it. I'll use the old picture and maybe I can get a slightly better rendering... whooo, I was tired when I made that last one >_<

On resolution... 1440x900, I think, as I said before.
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Atrius on 13, February, 2009, 08:18:00 PM
We can't make a banner for every possible resolution there is, Role

Something that could be done though is putting an image at both the left, and right side of the title bar, and even maybe adding one in the middle.  Unless you wanna try something like that 200x700 will be perfectly fine.

I can set my resolution from 640x480 to 1280x1024.  My monitors suggested setting is 800x600 though, so I've already got it higher than it should be, any higher and it starts to flicker slightly.

I meant range, meaning the min and max your compy will do.

@Atrius:  I know, it's just that I'm tired of having all these cramped limitations on forums...

Well, if we went with a Reveal theme, we could make the background black and it wouldn't even matter.

Since there's apparently no objections, I'll start making a 200x700 banner, Jupiter (reveal) themed on Wensday.

(I'm going to be busy until then, so patience fellow hackers)

Way too plain, also the "Invision Power Board" image at the top is going away once we have the banner to replace it with, that may be a while though since Charon's computer died on her...  Or I could just replace it with the one she's already done for now.

We shall see. I'm currently procrastinating, so bleah. *dodges all the random spear throwing*

And w00t for the banner. Although I could have done a better job if my computer hadn't of commited suicide at the last minute.

I kind of actually like the plain black. Although some violet might be nice...

Okay guys, you seem to be freaking out a little bit over the theme.

It's a Jupiter based theme. Not an Ivan theme. If we all get time, I could do one for all the adepts, but my HTML skills are terrible and I'm still procrastinating.

Anyways, later in the week, I'll see if I can get some pretty new Jupiter based buttons.

For now, notice that we now have 4 new emoticons (activate by typing in the below without asterisks (*))

:*venus:   :VenusSet:
:*mercury:  :MercurySet:
:*mars:  :MarsSet:
:*jupiter:  :JupiterSet:

I also activated profile picture, just in case you want one. I might change the size restrictions if I made it too small, but it should be large enough for most JPGs. The picture appears right next to your username in your profile. Also, I changed the max avatar size to 100x100 pixels, because 80x80 pixels was a tad too small.

If you have more suggestions, let me know.

Sorry to hear about the job issues, Role. My mother's having the same problem, but luckily my father is still employed. If he loses his job though (which is unfortunately in the auto industry) we may have to move out of the country =O

Yeah... But I was working retail, so it's a hazard of the job.

It doesn't help that I live in a city with a really high layoff rate.  Now there's a ton of really experienced workers desperate enough to work jobs people my age usually get for the same pay... meaning they get the job, and I get shown the door...

Ah, well.  Until the American Palpatine gets kicked out of office, I'll most likely be searching for anything I can get, whilst mooching money off of the gov't.

Anywho, I understand about being busy.  That's why I've not been here for so long!  Though you may not have the same reasons as I do for being busy, we all have our own reasons.  But still, I like the job you've done so far. ^-^

This topic has been pinned, as I think that having one main topic for forum updates make a hell of a lot more sense than random new topics. Any future topics made by other users will be locked, and they will be sent to the dungeon (not really).

I added a new forum, titled "Forum Games". I looked through the Invasionboard stuff and I can't seem to find any way to disable post count added there, so... enjoy the free boosts.

Basically, the Forum Games section is a section where, instead of intellegent hacking discussions or debating over Obama (or, rather, us complaining about him), we can now play mindless games of posting, which usually only involve reading the above post and making a chain. You guys probably know what they are anyhow, so...

Any comments on this new forum? Also, you can suggest other forums, or child boards as well.

First - NONE of the buttons go with this scheme.

Second - It looks horrible.  The banner having the black/white thing is understandable, but the entire forum?  No... just... no.

Third - If going with a jupiter theme, wouldn't it make more sense to have, gee, I dunno, Jupiter colors?  We need a purple scheme, but one that didn't totally clash like the last one...

Fourth - If you're not gonna change it... then why not offer the ability to change the skins based on what's available?  I've seen this done on many forums in the past, so all we'd need is to figure out how, make another one that won't make my eyes cry, and then you'll not have me whining about your poor fashion sense...
Title: Feedback for the forums?

Miyabi is currently working on editing the CSS sheet for the forum. I gave him the purple scheme. I don't like the black at all either, but until he finishes the sheet, we'll have to make due.

(it's a real pain on the user CP, gawd)

And I do have a poor fashion sense. Odd to say considering I'm a designer. I'm not that great on the webworking, so I'll just see if I can whack Miyabi into finding us a good colour scheme. Most of the colours were just fine before, but some of the violets were too saturated. Ah well. Let's wait and see from Miyabi.

*whacks Miyabi into work*

EDIT: Now it's all nice and cute and purple. Yay.

It has come to my attention that you're colorblind, Charon.  That's PINK.  I may be fine with it (despite the fact that it doesn't go well with the jupiter theme), but some of those 'macho men' over there may be too insecure with their masculinity to be okay with it...  :P

Shall I suggest this alternative?

Okay, technically that's a pale magenta, which is a form of purple. You can call it pink, but it's basically the "between" colour of pink and purple.

However, I will test both of these shortly.
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 05, April, 2009, 10:35:00 AM
Technically, Pink IS a form of purple.  Most people claim it's "Light Red"...

But I beg to differ.  Light red is just a light red.

...Though, with this color background, I must admit... it does make it look REALLY pink...  But play around with colors as much as I have, and you'll see that if you want pink, check the purples, not the reds.  Light Reddish Purples make MUCH better pinks.

Thought'd I'd like to point out something:

#ipsbanner { position:absolute;top:1px;right:5%; }
#logostrip { border:1px solid #5D5487;background-color: #000000}
#submenu   { border:1px solid #D4D0ED;background-color: #E7E6EF;font-size:10px;margin:3px 0px 3px 0px;color:#534F6C;font-weight:bold;}
#submenu a:link, #submenu  a:visited, #submenu a:active { font-weight:bold;font-size:10px;text-decoration: none; color: #3A4F6C; }
#userlinks { border:1px solid #D0CFDF; background-color: #F5F5FA }

The background on the logo strip should be black (as shown here) - for those who want to give style sheets, make sure you consider this.

That makes sense, as it's a reveal theme... but when we get to other elemental themes, we'll have to figure out how to go about it.

...Oh, God... I just realized how much of a PAIN Earth is gonna be, because Golden Sun just HAD to make earth's color BROWN... T-T

Other colors go off of base colors, so they're easy... well, I'll get to it when it comes, I suppose.
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 05, April, 2009, 12:02:00 PM
Earth is also plants. We could do a green theme (because a brown theme would just be hideous).

What I'm thinking about doing for the others is have them in a black circle, not a "revealy" circle, just a black circle. This will make a pretty cute banner anyhow...
Title: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 05, April, 2009, 06:33:00 PM
Problem with green is that it goes against Golden Sun's color schemes.  It'd be one thing if it actually would have fit with Venus, but don't see that really happening.

Naw, I was refering to the colouring. The banners were kind of a test to see how it would work. If I wanted, I could possibly make a 20x48 gif and make a texture...

I'll put yours on for the time being. (and I seriously need to get a new Photobucket account, I'm reaching almost 1000 pictures XD)

...But... I already posted the coloring.  It was the second one I posted...  I just copypasta'd it into my forum and made an edit to the banners...

I have now added textures to the main banners. What do you think?

Very nice, I like it! ^-^

Just a thought, perhaps the textures themselves should reflect the elements they represent as well?  For example, mercury should have a more "flowing" texture.

You have to request an Admin to do it for you.  We wouldn't want people to go around changing their name randomly trying to pretend to be someone else.

However, I move to get rid of all the "Face" emotes and replace them all with Golden Sun's emotes.

Yeah, the yellow smileys remind me too much of MSN. It would be neat to have a Kraden who is not sleeping. As well, maybe the younger versions of Isaac, Garet, and Jenna would look good too, or a Lemurian Ship.

Just thinking of smiley ideas.

EDIT: I just thought of a good idea, but I am not sure if I am the first to think of this.

When it is possible, a search bar should be added, to search for information in posts and threads.

QuoteThat's why I suggested the GS 'smilies' in their place. Like the ones for irritation, smiley, pouty, neutral/worried, heart... you know, the speech bubble emotes. Totally get rid of the annoying yellow faced emotes we have now, as in totally deleting them. Also, if we can have each of the emotes surrounded by :'s , then when we type B: or B) when we make lists, it won't smiley when we weren't wanting it.

For the :P emote? Briggs. You know of what I speak.

True, that makes sense. It would be cool to also have a Flying Lemurian Ship.

FEIZHI! <3

Alas, some love for the most minor Jupiter Adept in the game!  By the way... THink we can do some reordering of the Emotes?

Make them 5 across, start with the elemental stars.

Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Void

Put their djinni under it...  followed by Kraden.

Then put the 4 GS1 characters in the same elemental order, followed by Sea Boat
Then the GS2 crew followed by the Sky Boat.
Then the Prox Four followed by Lazy Kraden.

THen... others.

Oh yeah, nice emotes by the way. I have just one small question... Are you planning on making the emotes of enemies that you see on the world map?

If you are not sure what I am talking about, I am thinking that it would be cool to see a boss emote, or a Punch Ant.

Post by: Atrius on 12, July, 2009, 05:03:00 PM
*slaps a rough animated gif exporter into the TLA editor*

Mwa ha ha!

Err... I mean, taking all requests for emotes.

This is great, Atrius! Er, Atrius, could we somehow add more themes? I could get to work and you could extract some buttons for them if I could only get it running...

Okay, for the new site, time to post the new things...

Venus Theme

[sprite=243, 1, 0]Venus Sit[/sprite] - Topic
[sprite=243, 2, 0]Venus Walk[/sprite] - Hot Topic
[sprite=243, 3, 0]Venus Run[/sprite] - Very Hot Topic

[sprite=243, 1, 1]Venus Sit[/sprite] - Poll
[sprite=243, 2, 1]Venus Walk[/sprite] - Hot Poll
[sprite=243, 3, 1]Venus Run[/sprite] - Very Hot Poll

I'd need a gif editor that ISN'T made of fail to show a good example of my idea for topics/polls you've posted in.  It's basically the :Venus: Icon fused into the lower left corner of the animation

Mercury Theme

[sprite=244, 1, 0]Mercury Sit[/sprite] - Topic
[sprite=244, 2, 0]Mercury Walk[/sprite] - Hot Topic
[sprite=244, 3, 0]Mercury Run[/sprite] - Very Hot Topic

Mars Theme

[sprite=245, 2, 0]Mars Walk[/sprite] - Hot Topic

Again, the only one that really irks me is Mars, simply because standby looks so much like set. :p
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

Doesn't matter, though.  They're not supposed to be too different from each other.  These aren't the 'new posts' indicators, just the little piccy next to the thread nobody really cares about.  Right now, it's... well, just go to the thread list and look below it.  They don't look too different from each other right now anyways.

Edit:

Locked topic is a cropped version of: [sprite=691, 0, 0]Psy Lock[/sprite]
And for pinned topic: [sprite=407, 0, 0]Pin![/sprite]

I figure these would be universal.  If you have a better idea for pinned topic, please let me know.

Oh, ha ha. The lash pin. That's a pretty good idea, actually. :3

I'm still trying to figure out how all this SMF stuff works, to be honest ._.

Whoa, your avatar evolved!  Cool. *is BIG digimon fan!*
And no, NOT digivolved.  Don't get me started on my hatred for the dub.

Personally I'm not too satisfied with the Lash Pin, but... well, it's the only thing I can find that makes much sense.  Still wondering on what to do for the "new posts" bit.  Probably Standby for no new posts, Running for New Posts, and Running to the side for new posts in a subforum...

But then that does nothing for the Menu theme...  I'll try to find something for it.

<3 Hawkmon. Although it's a slightly revived love... I forget how much I like it until I immerse myself within it again...

I'm thinking it might make the most sense just to use external psynergy buttons, like with the psynergy seal and the pin (although only the move hand comes to mind, and it's a pretty big sprite). Hrm... either that or we could use either Felix or Isaac (since their considered main characters) doing running, standing and walking animations.

Heh, I actually run a digimon game over in RPoL.  ^-^

Huh, but that just seems out of place for a menu theme.

Hi guys, I have returneth, if only temporary.

Anyhow, the forums look nice, Atrius yer missing yer menorah lol, but I don't have much computer access (albeit quite a bit of internet access ironically) so I will be unable to create new themes for a while. :o

If I can get some sketches up for some images, I wouldn't mind helping out by providing stock for the images however.

The forums are pretty good. I only have one suggestion though. Since I am a bit too busy to look into the editor for the animations, could you please upload a few more of the significant characters as emoticons?

Have a nice day.

No.  The solution to your 'problem' is to stop being lazy.  We're not here to bow to your every whim.  If you want a list that badly, make a topic for reference.

Salanewt, I created the [sprite] tag specifically so that I wouldn't have to do that.

Ah, Hanukkah did start today didn't it?  Hmm...

i am not a goth bird girl D=<

I haven't been able to do any art on the computer, let alone edit it for any themes. I would but usually I'm either posting from my DSi or my mom's laptop, and I can't edit the pictures on them. Also, I kind of suck with SMF ._.

I understand, I'm kind of dormant now. I tend to be more active than Atrius on the forums as a whole though.

I have some time on Ubuntu, I'm getting some files up for a Venus theme now. I might change the class buttons again :x

Speaking of classes, as you raise through the classes, you now get progressively more PM space.

EDIT:

New clan system is proposed.

Choosing one clan over the other will not have any particular advantages or disadvantages, but only you can view the special "clan forum" that is the same as your clan. If you have no clan (neutral), none of these boards are visible, unless you are on the moderating team (those on the community project are exempt). Just an idea, otherwise the clan basically dictate the name of your rank.
There are a few rules to keep everything in order:
1. Please do NOT ask new members to join one clan or another >_>
2. No wars between clans

What do you think?

I'd really rather not make PM storage a reward for posting more.  The only reason the limit is there at all is due to resource limitations on the server.

As well, Charon isn't just responsible for the forums appearance, she has the same authority you would expect any forum Admin to.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

Agreed, PM storage should be based on quality, not quantity.  We don't want to encourage spamming.

Part of the problem has to do with how Invisionfree's admin system handles allowing you to change images for themes, or rather that it doesn't.  It's one of many things I need to look into.

Well, that's great and all, but...

I was asking Charon.  The one who's supposed to be in charge of cosmetics so you can focus on the editor.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

I thought you did?  I could have sworn you gave Charon admin powers so they can help out with the Forum Admin duties, such as cosmetics, new forum categories, etc... so you could focus on the editor more.  Was I wrong?

Ah, then you're hearing me wrong.

It's not that she's not doing it, so much as she's not only unfamiliar with it and is having connectivity troubles.  I'm asking her how well she's been able to familiarize herself with it so that things can get back up to speed.  Not everyone has leet programming powers like you, y'know?

Venus theme needs a few kinks worked out - click on a forum when you're in the skin.  See the symbol legend below the topics?  See how a good solid half of it is purple, which is NOT a color attributed to venus?  Yeeeeeah...

I'll check around in the default theme to see if I can find anything on it.

The bottom half of the symbols guide in the unread topics section is also purple in the default theme

He's right.  It's the exact same thing.  So... yeah, verification, GET!  It's not just one person! \o/

Also, the default theme is REALLY bright.  Instead of yellow, why not make it gold?  Remove a little bit of green from it and it should work.  I think the Hex Code for gold is F7DD00, if memory serves correct.  Also, dunno if this is intentional, but... the quote box in the Venus theme is yellow... seems a little off, but not by much.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

I'll look into it during lunch today. (scratch that stupid 1000+ student English class had to kick me out) I might also redo the yellow bars in the default theme.

I'm thinking about changing the default's colours monthly, to give us a bit of variation. So around the end of June, expect a new colour scheme.

Is there a way to have multiple colors for each position, depending on which clan the position holder is in?  It'd be nice if all of Jupiter was various shades of Purple, you know?
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Atrius on 09, June, 2010, 09:26:34 PM
It would be nice to separate the clan system from the regular user positions, and have it do something different like put the symbol ( :Venus: :Mars: :Jupiter: :Mercury: ) beside your name, or something like that.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 09, June, 2010, 09:33:56 PM
Well, I figured that we could do it like this:

For the color of the user title, it looks at the three positions of a member...

Position 1 being their rank (Admin, GM, CH Leader, CH Main Staff, Member)
Position 2 being their clan (Deity, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Unclanned)

Position 1 determines the shade, Position 2 determines the color.

Something like that.  Dunno what the third position's even there for, though.  Perhaps that's what's looked at for Post count, and thus the Count Title (where my Miracle Member status comes from, I guess).
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Atrius on 09, June, 2010, 10:28:47 PM
The "Forum Member" user group is just to make handling permissions easier.  This way if the default permissions that everyone has change for whatever reason (like adding a new sub forum that everyone should be able to use) we don't have to fiddle with settings for every single special user group since they get inherited from the "Forum Member" group instead.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 09, June, 2010, 10:45:07 PM
Ah, so that's what the third one is for.  Still, I think my idea for determining color could work well.

If it hasn't been posted yet, I just realized that Profile Comments are never censored, even when the "Leave words uncensored" is unchecked.

You think that can be fixed? Just wondering.

Example: Check Charon's Profile Comments (http://forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php?action=profile;u=35).

Edit: And it seems to be the same for the forum as well, um? Is it only for the cbox?

I have a suggestion.  Right now, the Mercury Clan names are in Cyan.  That is really hard to read.  I suggest making it a lot less... bright, so it's actually readable without needing to highlight the name.

I've got some ideas for a rework of the elemental bullet emotes.  It also includes fundamental bullets, too.  I'd suggest putting it to a vote before implementing it, but here's what the new ones would look like:

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarG.png) - Venus
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarF.png) - Mars
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarA.png) - Jupiter
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarW.png) - Mercury
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarL.png) - Sol
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarD.png) - Luna
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarN.png) - Neutral

If you like the idea, but want one of them tweaked a bit before you put it to vote, I can do that.  Personally, I think these look nicer than the old bullets, and would also include the fundaments for when people want to make spells for them for RPs and Mono-element hacks and the like.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 17, January, 2011, 05:32:16 PM
The only one I don't like is the Sol one, just because its so hard to see. The others are great.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 17, January, 2011, 05:34:07 PM
Eh, the problem comes from having to distinguish it from both the Venus and Neutral bullets.  I also have a green and unknown bullet if you want to add it too:

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarE.png) - Saturn! (Lulz...)
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarQ.png) - Unknown

So for sol, do you want me to tone down the brightness a bit?

I think it would work if it had a bit of a darker outline.

Okay, here's some updates.

Due to DD's color themeing, I redid the Luna bullet to reflect it more than that of the Temple's Luna.  Here's the comparison:

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarD2.png) vs (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarD.png)

As for light, I have two new ones, and the original one to show you (it was WAY brighter x_x)

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarL2.png) (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarL.png) (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarL3.png) (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarL4.png)

Tell me which ones you prefer.

The first for the Luna, the second for the Sol.

...The second for Sol is the original one I showed you...  Or did you mean the second after that one?

Huh? It appears the perfect colour now... Maybe I'm going colourblind? But the fourth looks good too.

Which looks better to you?

Then if you're gonna change the bullets, save and upload these:

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarG.png) - Venus Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarF.png) - Mars Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarA.png) - Jupiter Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarW.png) - Mercury Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarL4.png) - Sol Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarD2.png) - Luna Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarE.png) - "Saturn" Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarN.png) - Neutral Bullet
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarQ.png) - Unknown Bullet

Yes, I know, there is no 'Saturn' (yet, who knows what Camelot will decide to do now... >_>), it's there if they want a Green bullet, and it fits the 'planetary' themes of the bullets.  Also, don't forget to put it up for a vote, some people may not really like it after all, so better safe than sorry, right?

Also, the Positions are getting out of hand.  It needs to be cleared up and kinda regulated.  I suggest the following:

Position: (can be Admin, Global Mod, Section Mod (state which section), Member, Validating, Banned)
Element: (can be Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, or Neutral.  Default is Neutral.)
Fundament: (can be Sol, Luna, or Neutral.  Default is Neutral.)
Rank: (Clan rank.  Title depends on clan.  Unlcanned are simply 'unclanned'.)
Nationality: (the various races you posted.  They make more sense as nationalities, though.  Default is 'unspecified'.)

Also, keep them in that order, and keep all of them there.  It's far less confusing if these things are ordered, and you'll be able to do more with them if you do something like this, such as having certain things on the forums being dependent on certain fields.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 17, January, 2011, 08:26:18 PM
Well, to order it, we'd probably have to get a mod, because currently positions that aren't your main position are in alphabetical order automatically.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

Shouldn't be too hard.  It's better than "Position" > "Position 2" > "Position 3" etc... with no real coherency to it.

...You DID read why I included it, right?  For the sake of having a green bullet?  It was only even given the name 'saturn' (always in quotes, too) to fit thematically with the names of the rest of the bullets. You could use :green: to make it work, and it would be fine.

It's been over three weeks, I claim the right to post again.

I have a suggestion.  You know how the posts in Forum Games don't show up on the Latest Posts section?  Well, since it's our spam forum, I don't think it should be counted in the forum statistics section either.  Right now, it dominates forum statistics, so it's hard to really get a good grasp as to what boards and topics are popular outside of our spam section.  Atrius, do you know a way to fix this?

Also, Charon, please wait a bit before hunting down any mods.  We don't want Sala's story to come true, after all. XD
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 17, February, 2011, 10:11:03 AM
Okay... our forum games section is not our spam section ;-; It's just a place where people can play, but spam isn't exactly the term for it. To compare... just look at FES's Spam Land... (http://forums.feshrine.net/index.php?showforum=18)

Anyhow, you can just mark the topics as read. I'm not sure but there might be a way to ignore topics altogether...

Lol, don't worry, I won't xD
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 17, February, 2011, 10:36:58 AM
We treat it like our spam section, therefore it might as well be.  Even still, I don't think it should show up on the forum statistics, since it pretty much dominates it (literally - 6-7 of the top ten are forum games every time).

@Mark topics as read:  It's clear now that you didn't read my post at all.  This has NOTHING TO DO WITH "MARK AS READ".  Go to the main forum page.  You that thing at the bottom?  The thing that says "[More Stats]"?  Yeah, THAT.  CLICK IT.  Oh, here, I'll make it easier for you.  http://forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php?action=stats  <--That link.  Notice that it has NOTHING TO DO WITH POSTS BEING READ OR NOT.

Seriously, Charon, read my posts before making comments like that.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

._.

Role... >_> Just ignore the Forum Games... I really don't want to through this again. Seriously, if you don't like them just set them as "mark as read" in the Forum Games every so often, because its only 2-3 threads that get updated often. Those 2-3 threads are easy to skip and since we don't have insane activity elsewhere, it won't get shoved to extra pages in the Updated Topics area...

Looking through the PMs (>_o sorry) it seems like its just an issue with the stats. We could probably implement something that tells the stats page to ignore boards with "do not count posts" checked.

Not even "do not count posts" so much.  I created a hidden setting that hides a forum from all the latest post feeds, I'll just extend it to keep it out of the statistics as well.

A suggestion for some minor skin tweaks.  You know how the RPG skin has that light green background?  I figure that for the other skins, why not have a similar effect?  Mercury would have a lighter blue, Jupiter a lighter purple, etc...

It actually looks much more appealing than just having a white background.

Jupiter would like to change their ranks to the following:

1.   Associate
2.   Apprentice
3.   Page
4.   Seer
5.   Illusionist
6.   Enchanter
7.   Conjurer
8.   Magician
9.   Magus
10.   Sage
11.   Wizard
12.   Magister
13.   Warlock
14.   Sorcerer
15.   Alchemist
16.   High Alchemist

This would correspond to the standard, non-clanned ranks, from least number of posts to highest number of posts.

It's already been done for Jupiter, though now Jupiter needs the main forum part a bit darker since it's a bit too bright in contrast... eventually, I'm sure we'll get at least some kind of balance here.  The RPG theme is done really well, so I'm recommending it be used as reference.

As we develop the Clan Wars-verse more and more, as well as work on the D-Crisis project, it's becoming more and more clear that it's probably a good idea to include clanless in Clan Commons.  While they don't have an affiliation with any one clan, they are part of the Clan Wars universe, serving as both neutral parties as well as mercenaries.  Arguably, it could be said that while there's Four Main Clans, there's Five Main Groups, with clanless being that fifth group of people.

As such, for things like Lore, Timeline, and location ideas, they should have their fair say in the matter.  In fact, for the exact reason that they don't have a clan affiliation, they could serve even as neutral parties in disputes.  As such, I say let them see the Clan Commons area, and if you insist on having a place for clans to talk to one another beyond the eyes of clanless, then have it just be a subforum like Clan Trades.

Hmm.. I've been thinking... Is there any way to indicate which of the 8 latest posts were last edited on the forum index's latest posts list?

Also, I support Role's suggestion. I think that would be awesome. If you took it a bit further they could be the Unclanned Clan. (With their own subforum, with no leader, nothing much special, because everyone is equal/separate.)
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 15, June, 2011, 01:49:01 AM
No, they shouldn't have a clan, by the very fact that they're unclanned.  To give them their own thing that clanned members can't access defeats the whole meaning of "Unclanned".
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 15, June, 2011, 01:56:17 AM
Yeah, I suppose you are right.

After all, anyone could make another account and see what's going on in there. (Not that anyone would without permission, because it is against the rules.)
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

...No they can't.  That's against the rules, and you'll be banned.  Even Kain's joke characters like Yuiko have been removed.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 15, June, 2011, 02:04:51 AM
Oh, I didn't notice. Thanks for the heads-up.

(But either way, Unclanned would be too easy to access.. via either just removing yourself from a clan, or just getting a friend to join and tell you what's going on without having to worry about passing any qualifications.)
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 15, June, 2011, 02:19:21 AM
Yeah, the thing is that if you treat unclanned as a clan, then it defeats the point of the other clans.  Not only that, when you join a clan, you'd lose access to it.  That's why they shouldn't have their own clan.

However, there's no reason they can't be part of the world, and by the very nature of Clan Commons, it's a perfect place for them.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Atrius on 15, June, 2011, 02:54:56 AM
Unclanned members can now participate in the clan commons.

QuoteHmm.. I've been thinking... Is there any way to indicate which of the 8 latest posts were last edited on the forum index's latest posts list?

It's possible, but it sounds unnecessarily confusing.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 16, June, 2011, 03:54:28 AM
Okay, well the simplest example I could think of right now would be to have the word(s)

Quote(new edit(s))

apear next to the link. When the link has been read again, the "(new edit(s))" text could disappear.

That's an example.. still sound confusing? (Or perhaps you meant confusing as in coding it... hmm..)

You don't have to do it if you don't want to as this is just a suggestion.

Also, sweet! (About the Clan Commons.)
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

An easier way would just be to have it so that if the last post in a topic is edited, it'll bump it on the list, signifying that there's new info there.

Anywho, for the next big forum update, I've got one request.  If y'all have comments on them, please let me know.  Since Atrius is gonna be gone for the most part next month, it'd give us a good month to refine what exactly we want so he can do it well.

Personally, what I'm asking for - though small - would be a nice update.  Right now, we've got a hodgepodge mess of positions.  Instead, I'm suggesting the following fields for everyone:

Position: Admin, Global Moderator, Moderator, Member, Validating, or Banned
Element: Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, or Neutral (Default is Neutral)
Fundament: Sol, Luna, or Neutral.  (Default is Neutral)
Rank: Clan Leader, Clan Second, Clan Member, or Clanless.  Coded to correspond with the clan (and maybe gender), so if the Element Field is Jupiter, the Rank Field is Clan Leader, and the gender is Female, it'd display "Grand Overlady" (Grand Overlord if male).

There'd also be a corresponding change with the post level.  If we could make the "XYZ Member" correspond with both post count and element, then we could have element-specific lists like the one I posted earlier for Jupiter.

Finally, All four would be available for "Sort by" in the member list.  Right now, just the first position is listed I think.  It'd be nice to instead sort by element, fundament, or rank.

Anyone have anything they want to add to this or maybe suggest a clarification or refining of the idea?
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

Hmmm, this is to "tidy" up the forum. I think its a nice idea.

I'm not sure i understood the post count part though ...
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 01, July, 2011, 03:47:01 AM
For example, right now you're a Great Member.  I'm a Chosen One.  If we were to implement this, then clans would get to choose what those titles are - I'd be an Alchemist right now according to my post count, and you would be a Magician if you were Jovian (assuming I counted right).

Edit:  Also, if we could have our displayed badge displayed with a right align so that they're even, and if we could have a new field for Skype names that'd be great.

Actually, an interesting thing to do would be to have each of those little icons that show in our posts to have a position for them - perhaps in the order of profile, PM, website, email, skype, YIM, AIM, MSN, ICQ, Chosen Badge.  If one field isn't filled in, it's blank, rather than just being one thing listed after another as it is now.

In the profile tab, there's the "Who recently changed my Karma" and "Whose Karma have I recently changed". That's actually dealing with the coins now, and not respect or Karma. Might be wise to change that to reflect what it's showing.

But if we are just fixing a grammar error, we might not want it bumped on the list. Your suggestion is the best so far. However, I recommend there be a checkbox for "Bump" or something like that.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 01, July, 2011, 04:41:03 AM
No, that might be abused.  Instead, just alter the option to "Major edit" instead of "bump" and it'd do that.  It's basically the same thing, but it's no longer a big red button to noobs.  It'd be unchecked by default, of course.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 01, July, 2011, 05:03:52 AM
Yeah, I suppose Major Edit would work. People can still abuse it though, when they learn why the option is there.

I'd say you'll probably want to put some restraints on it as well..

For example, say you can only bump one topic once a day, so you have to pick that topic wisely. (That seems a bit restrictive though, but less restrictive then not having that opportunity at all. (Like right now.).)

Edit: In the end, it is probably best just to explain how to not abuse the Major Edit box in the rules, and what not, etc.

Also i will agree with Whiz here coin related options should reflect that ....

And maybe the suggested changes should be in one post so that Atrius will hate the clans less?

Yes, they should.  It also only applies to the Four Main clans - the fundaments are more or less hangout places, so... yeah.  Also, I'm not expecting atrius to take this on until the end of July when he gets back.  When that happens, I'll make the Official "Honey Do List" of the forums with all the suggestions in finalized, ordered form, and with examples if we've got them.

Also, including a bit of an incomplete mockup of what the new memberlist would look similar to when this is done, using the new Jupiter skin I'm working on.

That is a nice mock up? But... adding a bunch of IMers can get to be a bit ... messy.

I almost feel like there should be a way to combine all of those. (And maybe have the icons show up in the order they want, like if they would rather be contacted on Skype rather then MSN, that icon could appear first.)

The way the settings page could be done may be a bit more complicated, though.. I suppose you could replace the labels with Combo-boxes. (And the Combo box can have a Ă–ther selection.. the icon used for that could be a simple general icon.

Adding a bunch?  What are you talking about?  Only skype was added.  All the others are already fields on the forum, even the no-longer-used ICQ.

Also, can you explain what you mean with the settings thing?  I don't follow.

QuoteAdding a bunch?  What are you talking about?  Only skype was added.  All the others are already fields on the forum, even the no-longer-used ICQ.
I know, but I was mainly suggesting a way to make those set columns a bit shorter. The element, clan rank, and fundament already take a good deal amount of space.

QuoteAlso, can you explain what you mean with the settings thing?  I don't follow.
I guess I was a bit vague, the page where the users put in that information.

Mine: http://forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php?action=profile;u=2;sa=forumProfile
Role's: http://forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php?action=profile;u=6;sa=forumProfile

EDIT: The image you have made shows that your resolution is bigger than mine. So...
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 01, July, 2011, 07:25:02 AM
It was a mock up.  They'll probably be larger, accounting for the sorting arrow.  However, I'm not going to spend all of my day making that perfect.  The fact that most of the new fields are blank should have said to that.  Also, my monitor's native resolution is 1200x1600.  It'll look different with smaller resolutions, but all of them should be properly proportional.

I also don't see how it's exactly complicated or what you want.  Can you make a mockup to give an example of what you're suggesting be done?

Edit:  New thing to be requested:  Change it so that the space added by the sorting icon isn't xbox huge, but merely the size of the icon itself.  Expanding a field an inch wide is kinda insane, especially for the IM lists.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 01, July, 2011, 08:16:06 AM
This is a fairly quick example. The top shows how all the IMs can be in the same column.

The bottom shows how it could be down. There is also a Website URL field below this information which you could probably get rid of when making this change.

The Email selection in the combo-box is something I'm not 100% sure about.... Since that is on another page. But I suppose one can have alternate emails.

Edit: It is likely that you won't need more than 5.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?

Problem is, some people may want to sort by whether they have said IM type or not.  You can sort by MSN right now, for example.  How would you sort that, though?  It's a great idea, sure, but... sadly, it won't work like you hope it will.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 01, July, 2011, 08:28:52 AM
Well, sorting.. I am not so sure if I'd call it impossible, but yes, it may be quite complicated to code.

I imagine you'd click "Contact Information" and a drop down list would show all the possible sorting methods.

As for how the sorting would work... I wonder if you can still have separate variables in the code that pick out all the users who have for example MSN or not.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 01, July, 2011, 08:31:18 AM
Well, that's the thing.  You say to simplify in one hand, but complicate things in the other.  It's a great idea, sure, but it's just not very feasible unfortunately.  It also conflicts with my other idea for the in-post info.   Here, I'll make a mockup and post it in a bit so you can see.

Edit:  Here's what my idea is:  ImageRight for the badge, and two rows for the icons - first is forum relevant, second is IM related.  Each one has a specific field that it calls - if they have it, it'll show the image.  If not, a 16x16 blank.gif or blank.png for proper spacing.  I know the information for our posts is a bit wrong (I don't have ICQ...), but I did it for example's sake.

Edit2:  Also, another idea.  You know how text appears next to the reply, quote, delete, etc icons in the posts and PM sections?  Let's just have the icons, and have the text just appear as mouseover instead of next to it.  It should be much more aesthetically pleasing.

Got four new bullet ideas, this time representing the four djinn.  They're designed to be the same size as the elemental bullets.

This would allow for someone to utilize both the elemental bullets and the djinn bullets in one line without expanding the heck out of the line.

Compare:

Isaac as Ronin requires:   :MarsDjinni: 5,  :JupiterDjinni: 4, as the element levels register as  :VenusStar: 5  :MarsStar: 5  :JupiterStar: 4
Garet, though, needs:   :VenusDjinni: 5,  :JupiterDjinni: 4 instead, because his innate element is Mars instead.

Contrast with:

Isaac as Ronin requires:   (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/MarsDjinn.png) 5,  (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/JupiterDjinn.png) 4, as the element levels register as  :VenusStar: 5  :MarsStar: 5  :JupiterStar: 4
Garet, though, needs:   (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/VenusDjinni.png) 5,  (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/JupiterDjinn.png) 4 instead, because his innate element is Mars instead.

Just a quick suggestion:

Some of the user names in the "Users active in past 15 minutes" are hard to read on the default forum "skin". Could you please include an option in the "look and layout preferences" that, for example, highlights them all black?

Example:
Griever ---> Griever

Sorry for using your name without permission...

No, a better idea would be to change the color of the usernames like we've been asking for for some time.  The big problems seem to be Mercury and Sol.

New addition for the Honey Do List:  Changing it so that there are only two categories of Badges:  General and Special Event.  General include all the standard, limited edition, and user generated badges.  Special Event include things like the April Fools Day event badges and the Elemental Cirno contest badge.  Also, we should allow a form for badge sorting/order for those who want it.  A form to fill out and send to Charon, so to speak.

Third: What clan talk?  This isn't the right topic for clan talk, after all.

Making a suggestion to upgrade the Sol and Luna bullets, and possibly get you to add in that 8th one.

Look at this, compare to that.

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/GSHCStyleBullets.png) vs (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/BulletSelection.png)

(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/GSHCLuna.png) I've gotten the Luna Gem juuuust light enough to look like it fits in with the set, it was too dark earlier.  (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/GSHCSol.png) Sol was just the opposite, it was too soft/pale compared to the others... but the fix was crazy easy, and actually fits the set WAY better than I'd hoped.  (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarE.png) And of course, the editor says we can fit 8 elements, with the last three being labeled ?.  Assuming we allow for derivative elements, those who use up all eight slots need a way to notate the eight slot. Please ignore this until I figure out why exactly it is that Atrius is so vehemently standing by the 4-options only, despite No Element being a clear fifth choice within the editor.  While the Green Bullet does complete the set, the reasoning given is pointless if my theory on how the code works is off.  I still support its adoption regardless, though, as I'm sure it'd have its uses.  I still would like the green star to be here, as it's part of the set.  And while Atrius delivered the blow of "256 element choices if you're willing to deal with the coding nightmare" to me, essentially making my argument for 8 moot, the option for those who want it would be nice.  The only reason I even suggested using :saturn: for it is because it fits with the naming theme for the others.

Again, Sol and Luna will REPLACE the current ones - the ones we have will be deleted and replaced by icons with exactly the same name - this would essentially upgrade every single instance of the bullets/gems in the forum, and make it overall look better.

A new thing to suggest - Purging anyone with 9 or less posts after 6 months of no posting, and moving up the 0 posts to be purged after only two months.  I've noticed that there's people who showed up, posted once or twice, then never posted again.  If they don't hit double digits (easily done in a single conversation!  Imagine if they said something in multiple threads!) by 6 months, then I think it's safe to say they're not coming back.

Of course, the 6 months would be from the time of their latest post, not from the join date.  It'd be no fair if they got purged after they finally started to become active, after all.  0 posts, of course, will remain as being purged-based-on-join-date.

I think by doing this, we get a better gauge on how active the site really is.

Another idea - reorganizing emotes.  Anyone with eyes can see that [more] thing right there - so why not just display emotes that are either more emote-y or things like the bullets?  We're not getting rid of any emotes - just rearranging them to make them more presentable.  In fact, I honestly think we should keep the displayed emote size limited to say 16x16 or something, so we have nice even rows.

Personally, I nominate the following emotes to be on the two emote lines:

:!:    :um:  :up1: :VenusStar: :MarsStar: (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/GSHCSol.png) :NeutralStar: :Unknown:
:?:  :fury: :irate:   :down1: :MercuryStar: :JupiterStar: (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/GSHCLuna.png) (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarE.png) [more]

Alternatively, if people want the smaller 'djinn bullets', I suggest this:

:!:    :um:  :up1: (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/VenusDjinni.png) (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/MarsDjinn.png) :VenusStar: :MarsStar: (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/GSHCSol.png) :NeutralStar: :Unknown:
:?:  :fury: :irate:   :down1: (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/MercuryDjinni.png) (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/JupiterDjinn.png) :MercuryStar: :JupiterStar: (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/GSHCLuna.png) (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a314/acidadept/Sprites/Misc/ToKStarE.png) [more]

IMO, it'd look more presentable this way.  Again, I'm not asking emotes to be removed.  That'd be dickish of me to do so.  I'm just asking that we change how we display them to look nicer.  I also don't expect the second setup to be adopted unless for some reason there's a demand by the other forum-goers to have the djinn bullets - Charon already kinda said they weren't needed.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 21, September, 2011, 09:51:29 AM
I like your bullets, if I get spare time I'll try to change them.

The problem with deleting people with 2-3 posts is that they may come to just ask a question every so often, recall this website and return to ask the question. I think it would be kind of a jerk move to delete their account under those circumstances. We need a bit of member purging but not that much.

Also I know what Dkj is talking about, he's talking about our wonky avatar uploading system. I have no idea why it's being that way, I've been using an external service for quite a while now.

@Charon:  That's why you wait until six months since their last post, rather than from the start date.  If it takes them six months to get interested enough to actually post, it's their own damn fault.

Also, what did you think of the emote organizing idea?
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 22, September, 2011, 10:59:31 PM
You'll really have to see what Atrius says about it, I'm still fundamentally against the idea but he might decide that we need to increase the number of posts required.

I like the organization, will probably see to edit tomorrow. Don't worry, no emotes will be removed... but I'm not sure if I can assemble them in that exact manner. We'll see I guess.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 23, September, 2011, 10:38:28 PM
It's just two rows - the same as it is now.  I specifically designed it so that you only had to use different emotes without having to need different coding or anything like that.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 25, September, 2011, 02:33:22 AM
It's not that, it puts a set amount on one row, then moves to the next.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Atrius on 25, September, 2011, 02:51:28 AM
I'm pretty sure I set where the first row ended, and the second began...

As far as member purging goes, I'm against doing anything aggressive with it.  Having your account deleted out from under you does not make for a very friendly and inviting forum experience.  The idea with the current purging is to delete accounts that will likely never be used, not ones that were barely used and forgotten.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Charon on 25, September, 2011, 03:01:54 AM
In addition, if a member was to return and forgot their password, it generally shows more respect to show that they already have an account than to have their account deleted. I recently returned to a forum that I signed up for 3 years ago and forgot about, and was pretty pleased to see I still had my account on there.

Ok I'll get to it, probably tomorrow... I'm tired though, got home from work at 2:00 am and working on CAFFINE OVERRUSH right now... Maybe I'll upload them tonight and do the arranging tomorrow...

EDIT: ACK ROLE Mind posting a zip file? =_=
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 25, September, 2011, 06:37:11 AM
Zip file?  For what, exactly?  Be more descriptive.

@Atrius:  If they have left for half a year, with no posts, no nothing, then I think it's a fair bet to think they're gone and not coming back.  It's not being a jerk, it's just pruning inactivity.  You can't pull the rug from under a person if the person already left and is miles away, now, can you?
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Griever on 25, September, 2011, 08:36:51 AM
Hmm Role has a point. But so does Atrius.

How about, rather than deleting the account simply make it inactive?

When we first register we need to activate the account right? So for those who have not used there account for let's say 6 months. The account becomes inactive. Then if they decide to revisit and log in, they receive a message saying they have been sent an email to reactivate their account. Then have a script to recognize active and inactive accounts and sort them accordingly.

This will let us know how many active accounts in the forum and also still has the friendly approach Atrius wants to maintain.

Just so you guys know, I don't really know if it's doable or not.
Title: Re: Feedback for the forums?
Post by: Rolina on 25, September, 2011, 08:48:22 AM
Well go look at all these old single-digit accounts and tell me - how many of them have been active within the last half a year?  De-verifying them is one thing... but they'll still be there, so it doesn't solve the problem of having members show up on the memberlist who are arguably no longer members.  And it's a solid half the members we have.

Well, I just had to stop a newer member from using the emotes to refer to characters, so you may want to look back at this the second you get the chance - this is by and far one of the easiest ways I can think of to get rid of most emote spam, since it tends to be of that variety.

Nah, you can blame Dark Dawn for that load of BS.  In order to notate Sol and Luna properly, beit for story reasons or whatever, we needed to make bullets for them.  A green bullet I had made earlier for the ToK - they use Green instead of brown for Venus.  Since I had already made it, it became a "eh, why not".  Thus, the full set.

What you want to do with it is up to you.  However, do realize that the site's goal is NOT DCrisis - that is but the largest collaborative project we have.  The site is about the editor, not that one particular hack.

Get the game.  While it's the worst of the series, it still has things introduced in it we probably have to acknowledge - such as Jupiter being the second best healing ailment, when before people argued whether it was the worst or second worst before hand.  These are things that will be referenced that you'll need to know about.

Scrap that Cbox on the bottom (that I originally suggested, hahaha), and upgrade to IRC.
It would make the forums more active (more posts, threads, etc.) and possibly make this place look neater.

@IRC: Unless I'm mistaken, the times when I've experimented with IRC, I've concluded that you couldn't have an archive for later viewing. D=

@Skype: I admit it is a nice messenger, but I usually don't like to keep it open because of unnecessary CPU usage/memory for what it is worth.

There are like 17 topics in the Debates forum at the moment. 5 of them were from me, 5 of them were from Salanewt....
There are like 14 topics in the Voting Polls forum at the moment. 7 of them were from me.

I was wondering, is it worth actually having these sub-forums? Or should we delete them and move the topics to Open Discussion? (Why did we have these forums if there were never going to be many topics?)

Thanks. (Not requesting that this should be done, specifically... but just asking what people think...)

+1 vote for keeping them.

Helps keep the place organized.

Are you sure that they are "organized" though? Have you checked to see if some Debate topics and Voting Poll topics are already in Open Discussion/other forums? ; For example, if any "vs." was a debate.. "Fooling around, vs. having a mission" would be one. (It's in Open Discussion, but it may or may not apply to Debates?) ; Zman's topic called Immovable object [vs] unstoppable object sounds more relevant to Debates...

Debate = discussion with opposing viewpoints. ; (I remember my Languages topic used to be in Debates, but got moved by Role/Charon... and following the definition along with my implication, I'm thinking it probably  should not have been moved. - It was about what the best second language was for the general public, which is DEFINITELY debatable. )

For organizing the forum, I think it may be better to find a better name besides Debates (and the like) where more topics are more likely to fit into them. From what I can tell... These two forums don't have a whole lot of use to the Community? (Or do they?) ... And then I come along trying to help populate those forums a little, but they don't go anywhere.

Some random examples:
Theories = Topics like The End Is Near, Thoughts on what we are made of..., Your views on life ... This can also include Mythology?

Now that I think about it, are Debates and Theories similar? - Should we just add Theoretical topics to the Debates forum and forget about getting rid of that forum?
