Title: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Rolina on 20, October, 2009, 03:42:00 AM
Well, given that we're all working on a community hack, it only makes sense that, if nothing else than for the lulz, we come up with our GS Avatars - that is to say, sprite representations of ourselves.  Here's what I've got so far:

Atrius - The link sprite.
Salanewt - An overworld version of the Dinox sprite.  No, you're NOT getting Yoshi (no other-game cameos not already present!), but the Dinox sprite is close, so...
Charon - A cloaked hooded figure with the dimly lit silhouette of a girl's face inside for the face portrait.
Me - The Disgaea Mage, in GS sprite form.

I'll come up with others when I can think of them, but at the moment, they're the only ones that really stand out.  Because of Salanewt's love for Yoshi, I just had give him the closest sprite possible.  How fitting for our mascot!  For Atrius, he's always had that TWF Link sprite, so I figured we'd let him use the unused elf/Link sprite in GS for his avatar, easy.  Perhaps we could have an ongoing joke that he's able to "Speak Silent Protagonist", having a emote conversation with the silent lead (if we do one, and if we put ourselves in), for the lulz.  Charon I figured we'd base off of GS's Charon, though, since she's a ferryWOMAN, her face sprite, if you look close enough, should clearly be female.  I figure I'm good with the disgaea mage.  I've been using it for my avatar in who knows how many forums for a while now...

I guess I should mention, though, that it's not gonna be an exact GS representation of the Disgaea mage... but it will look similar.  Basically, as if I were cosplaying as the mage - after all, I have to enforce the no-other-game-cameos rule even on myself...

What does everyone else choose for their GS sprite-self?

Um... I appreciate the thought of making me the closest thing to Yoshi without making me so, but I don't like the Dinox sprite as much... Anyway, what if we were to change what I look like to a person wearing a dark grey cloak with a red scarf? This is based on a sprite that I found in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga's hidden data. Please?I do not want to look like an enemy, even though I do appreciate the thought.

Have a nice day.

Aww, come on!  You'd make an awesome mascot-type character!  I even came up with a witty line so as to not let the PCs be scared of you!

Something with a black fidora :P
Best hat ever.

Imagine, someday we might be able to just make our own to import into the rom.

Also, I'm sure it would be fun for all of us to make an appearance in a community hack :P

Maybe we could even add someone as a boss lol

Well, okay Role. I can be a Dinox sprite, but could you please have a slight palette change? Perhaps something with blue.

By the way, thanks for the mascot.

Have a nice day.

As close as possible to a duck. I think I saw a chicken in the game so that would work.

I figured as a programmers joke we'd have a small "Village of the Programmers", where all the programmers live, and where I do unspeakable acts of violence against anyone who DARES break the fourth wall out loud. <3
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Atrius on 20, October, 2009, 07:24:00 PM
That is a hilarious idea, Role, the village would need to be well hidden though.

Quote from: DrickImagine, someday we might be able to just make our own to import into the rom.

Oh, but I already can, and I intend to support the project.

I'm all for me being the Link sprite, but... My avatar is a TWF Link sprite?  Mind me asking what the TWF stands for?

Two Weapon Fighting.  It's a DnD Feat.

Quote from: By the way, thanks for the mascot.

No problem.  You ARE the most Pet-like person here, after all...
The only other option would be ducky-boy, but you fit the part better.

Post by: Salanewt on 20, October, 2009, 07:38:00 PM
Thanks.

Wait, I'm like a pet? I suppose that could be true, looking at it from a certain angle.

Have a nice day.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?

Of course you are.  A Yoshi-like pet, inside, and some random chicken dood outside...  My trigger happy self inside with Atrius, Charon, and POSSIBLY Drick, if he contributes.

However, if you don't contribute to the game itself, you won't show up in the programmer's joke! <3
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Salanewt on 20, October, 2009, 07:48:00 PM
Oh no, don't worry. I am definitely planning on helping out. I would like to work with at least half of the enemies in the game, if not all (but I do not know who will be working with them, or if anyone has been chosen).

Besides, I think a few undead monsters NEED some form or variant of Cloak.

Have a nice day.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Rolina on 20, October, 2009, 07:58:00 PM
Cloak will NOT BE USABLE IN BATTLE.  EVER.  I will NOT change my position on this.  If we make cloak a battle psy that works like Haze (or whatever djinn was the hide-y one), then it'll get really broken, really fast.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Salanewt on 20, October, 2009, 08:02:00 PM
That is true. However, what if we were to make a new psynergy that was enemy only, and give it to like three or four types of enemies? I know that I can not change your mind on Cloak, but if we could have one that enemies can use and not players, then surely it would not make the game broken, right?

There will be enemy only psynergies, right?

Have a nice day.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Rolina on 20, October, 2009, 08:05:00 PM
NO.  I'm guessing you mean stuff like the will heads... If anything, give them an enemy non-standard ability that gives them a constant 50% chance to negate 50% of damage.  You know, being ghost like and all.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Charon on 20, October, 2009, 08:09:00 PM
Well, Cloak would be pointless in battle most of the time considering that you're often fighting in broad daylight or well lit areas... AND IT ONLY WORKS IN SHADOWS

Probably it could prevent you from receiving damage, but on the same coin, you can't move, because if you did, your "cloak" would disappear as you would need to move out of the shadows.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Salanewt on 20, October, 2009, 08:10:00 PM
Makes sense, but I was actually taking about enemies like Ghost (and MAYBE Amaze, although I would probably not do that). Anyway, I was not talking about making it so they could use it every turn (like Doom Dragon does with Cruel Ruin), but I suppose if we have come to a consensus that it is not a good idea, then...

Just out of curiosity, what do you have against Cloak for enemy only use?

Have a nice day.

Edit: By the way, it would not be in broad daylight.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?

I have something against that "hide away" thing, period.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Ehic on 20, October, 2009, 08:15:00 PM
We could make a usable item with the cloak effect and give it to a boss to prevent summon rushing. Not droppable though. Since it's an item the boss would have limited use of it.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Salanewt on 20, October, 2009, 08:16:00 PM
Okay then. Anyway, we are kind of getting out of topic here.

So, who else still needs to post an idea for what their cameo sprite would look like?

Have a nice day.

Very good. It looks like if we form a team to get these off of topic-ers back in line, then everything will be fine.

So... Comparing the location of "Developer's Settlement" to the current map of Weyard, where might it be?

Have a nice day.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Rolina on 20, October, 2009, 08:36:00 PM
That's something we'll find out later.  I know that I wanna try something, but I'm not sure if we can pull it off.  Basically, breaking the fourth wall with be somewhat of a joke.  But who does it depends on who you TALK TO first...

For example, talk to one guy, and he may go:  "Oh, geez, they're here!  Okay, everyone, remember not to break the fourth wall!"

Everyone but Role: *sweatdrop*
Role: *TWITCH*

Guy: Oh shi--
Role (at same time): Time to die! <3

*Role takes guy, drags him upstairs, a scream occurs, she shows up, does the <3 emote, and returns to her original position.*

HOWEVER - should you talk to someone else, say, Atrius, then that guy would say something different:

Main & Atrius:  *have an emote conversation - mind reading atrius after this reveal that he's fluent in Silent Protagonist*
If you talk to that guy from earlier, he'll say something else, like:  "Wait, what just happened?  Did they just have a conversation without even talking?"

Basically, there's a different script for each person, which one triggers depends on who you talk to first in that building.

HOWEVER... by mind reading them before talking to them (and thus triggering a script), they'll have a little conversation asking you about the game.

For example, mind reading Atrius before talking to anyone will get you:

"So, how do you like the game so far?  I'm the one who programmed the tools that made it, so I hope the end result was satisfactory"

Or something like that.

Both of those would make sense, for your avatars. Actually, it would make sense for it to be like the Pokemon Creator's hotel, except that out Golden Sun avatars will hopefully have a larger vocabulary (look better, and be in an actual town, not just one building, where everyone shares the same room), right?

Have a nice day.

It's exactly like that, actually, just one major difference - they won't actually say it.  You've gotta mind read them to find out.  Talking to them will trigger a different scene, depending on who you talked to, and will change what they say and think.  It'll reset each time you leave, though.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?

Hm... We should make it so some of the programmers do not say it, but others do (I mean, not all of them should think about the hack, or else it will be like they have the same minds).

Also... A basic letter-map idea of the town in which we live in!

Well, remember that conversation suggestion?  The one where they slip up and break the fourth wall, and I do unspeakable things to them in the back room?  That should imply that they're under threat to at least pretend to be in character when talked too.  The joke is that something always happens to make everyone break character, unless you mind read them before talking to them, after which they reveal who they are and what role they had in making the game.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Salanewt on 09, November, 2009, 03:04:27 PM
I remember this, yes, but I had forgotten one or two of the details. When I make one or two PhotoSuite drawing that give my ideas for Programtopia, I will definitely label when the character will go to be beated up for talking about that they should not. However, I think we should make the village a tiny bit of a maze (not much of one though). By doing this, you can see another joke appearance of some characters in other areas? For example, lets say that when you first come to Programtopia (lacking a better name right now), you only have Douse and Frost. You can use Douse on pits, and Frost on them to make tall steppingstones to hop onto the roof of another building. You can enter the attic to see another character appearance, but you can only enter and leave through the same door. Later on, lets say that you get Whirlwind or Gale. You can use it on the Whirlwind Bushes to get into a locked house through the back door (basically, make more funny cutscenes available that also reset with the main one (when you leave and enter the town)).

Have a nice day.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Rolina on 09, November, 2009, 03:15:02 PM
Progra...whut?  I'll stick with just plain old Hidden Village.  And no, it's not a maze.  It's straighforward and simple, a house with some cattle or something outside.  Heck, look at pokemon, they just had a simple generic hotel.  they've ALWAYS just had a simple generic hotel, nothing fancy or mazelike.

All the programmer avatars would be around a big table, as if they were celebrating or having a party or something (after all, we'd just finished making the game, once we get to that point).  But there won't be anything special about the place.  Put more effort into OTHER areas, places that matter or that have something with sidequesting in mind, but not for this.  Simple is best.

Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Rolina on 10, November, 2009, 01:07:06 PM
Remember, we're not going to just put in every forum member.  We will be putting in those who contribute to the actual game, and are perfectly fine with having only their screen name, and NOT their real name, listed in the credits.  After all, we don't want to bring fame to ourselves, since we're using Camelot's product as a base.  Leave the real names to them, we'll be happy with just our screen names.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Salanewt on 10, November, 2009, 03:45:37 PM
I know that it is a hidden village, I was just giving it a name for referencing it in the future. Also, after having spent some time thinking about it, I also agree that it should be simple now (but it should be more than just entering the town for a funny cutscene (like, maybe 3 houses, plus... Er... A puddle that you can fill, but it can not help you with anything?)).

Have a nice day.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Rolina on 10, November, 2009, 04:41:07 PM
How about The Hidden Village (of the programmers)?  It'd be an unnamed village, known only as 'the hidden village' in game.  I figure that THV would be a perfectly fine cutscene.

Also, you won't be seeing any scenes upon coming to town.  But, upon talking to the various programmer avatars (TALKING TO, not mind reading), a different scene will happen, depending on which one you talk to.  Examples include the "Atrius speaks Silent Protagonist", "XYZ breaks the fourth wall", and this one...

:Felix: - "talks" to Salanewt
:Felix: -  :!:
Role - Ah, don't worry about him, he won't bite.  ISN'T THAT RIGHT?!
Salanewt -

Mind reading Salanewt afterwards - Jeez, Role, at least give me a chance to speak...
Role - No, I'd rather not.
Salanewt - Wait, what?  How did you know what I was thinking?!
Role - I AM a Jupiter Adept after all.

Role -
Salanewt -

Talking to other people will reveal that they think I was a little too harsh on you.  Mind Reading me will reveal that I throughly enjoy teasing you, and don't care if the others think I'm too harsh.

Depends.  I think that it should be up to the individual what their sprite is.  If you want a pre-existing sprite, what would it be?
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?

Oh, lol, I do not want one. I like your idea for a Dinox sprite, but I would not mind adding a tiny bit more detail to it.

For example... How does a Blue Dinox with a black cape (and maybe hood) sound?

Don't clutter it up too much, or it'll look like crap.  Remember, these are small sprites - 32x32 max size. If you try to add too much, it'll look like crap.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?
Post by: Salanewt on 10, November, 2009, 07:12:16 PM
That is true. Anyway, it would only be a small cape, like the biddle of the body (so a tiny bit of the tail is seen). Also, I am kind of doubtful of the hood part... Perhaps I will make the compass sprites for it soon.

Have a nice day.
Title: Re: What would our avatars be in a GS game?

Oh yes, this is true. Okay then, I suppose I can work on this sprite soon, since I am planning a new third hack idea for Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, and I have to make some sprites. One will be Mario and Yoshi, one a community hack, and the other... Well, how does Mario and Luigi: The Golden Sun sound to you? Basically, everythign in the game will have Golden Sun graphics (if the game allows it), and the story will be changed, lol.

True, then I suppose I can leave the Mario and Luigi part out.

Also, to get back on topic... Yeah, I can make the sprites tomorrow, since somebody found some of my videos, and I practically elected myself a sprite-making slave, so i should have enough time tomorrow to make any programmer sprites if anyone wants them.

So... Does anybody else want me to make them sprites? We have:

Salanewt = Dinox Pet

Actually, I'd rather be a generic sprite. Most of the time the cameos use generic sprites anyhow - no need to take up sprite space for something as subtle as that, in my opinion (although Camelot obviously doesn't agree with me on this one!)
