Title: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Rolina on 28, December, 2009, 03:52:51 PM
Okay, first off - for those of you who've no clue what touhou is, check out this wiki (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Touhou_Wiki).  Most games in the series are of the Maniac Shooter genre (better known as "Bullet Hell"), particularly from Lotus Land Story onwards.  However, the fandom has grown it into something much, much larger than just the games.  Many great remixes, doujins, and hell, Yukkuris (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Yukkuri) found their origins in Touhou and its fandom.  So while the games make up the core of the series, the fandom's expansion is largely responsible for its success.  In fact, many things seem to have been adopted by the creator of the series, ZUN.

There are 12 games in the main series, which can be summed up in two distinct areas - Pre-Windows Era, and Windows Era.  For some reason, very few characters from the Pre-Windows Era have shown back up in the Windows Era.  Games that have an official number also have a commonly used English abbreviation. The games are:

Pre-Windows Era

TH01 東方靈異伝 〜 The Highly Responsive to Prayers (tHRP)
TH02 東方封魔録 〜 The Story of Eastern Wonderland (tSEW)
TH03 東方夢時空 〜 The Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream (PoDD)
TH04 東方幻想郷 〜 Lotus Land Story (LLS)
TH05 東方怪綺談 〜 Mystic Square (MS)

Windows Era

TH06 東方紅魔郷 〜 the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (EoSD)
TH07 東方妖々夢 〜 Perfect Cherry Blossom (PCB)
TH08 東方永夜抄 〜 Imperishable Night (IN)
TH09 東方花映塚 〜 Phantasmagoria of Flower View (PoFV)
TH10 東方風神録 〜 Mountain of Faith (MoF)
TH11 東方地霊殿 〜 Subterranean Animism (SA)
TH12 東方星蓮船 〜 Undefined Fantastic Object (UFO)

Additionally, there are many side-games.  They are:

Fighting Games -

TH07.5 東方萃夢想 〜 Immaterial and Missing Power (IaMP)
TH10.5 東方緋想天 〜 Scarlet Weather Rhapsody (SWR)
TH12.3 東方非想天則 〜 超弩級ギニョルの謎を追え 〜 Touhou Hisoutensoku

"Picture Taking" Bullet Hell -

TH09.5 東方文花帖 〜 Shoot the Bullet (StB)
TH12.5 ダブルスポイラー ~ 東方文花帖 〜 Double Spoiler (DS)

Other -

MegaMari - A Megaman clone, with Marisa fighting for her right to... steal Patchouli's books.
(more info to be added when I've got the time)

Print Works -

東方香霖堂 ~ Curiosities of Lotus Asia
東方三月精 ~ Eastern and Little Nature Deity
東方三月精 ~ Strange and Bright Nature Deity
東方三月精 ~ Oriental Sacred Place
東方文花帖 ~ Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red
東方紫香花 ~ Seasonal Dream Vision
東方求聞史紀 ~ Perfect Memento in Strict Sense
東方儚月抄 ~ Silent Sinner in Blue
東方儚月抄 ~ Cage in Lunatic Runagate
東方儚月抄 ~ 月のイナバと地上の因幡 (Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth)
The Grimoire of Marisa

Music -

蓬莱人形 ~ Dolls in Pseudo Paradise
蓮台野夜行 ~ Ghostly Field Club
夢違科学世紀 ~ Changeability of Strange Dream
卯酉東海道 ~ Retrospective 53 minutes
大空魔術 ~ Magical Astronomy
幺樂団の歴史1 ~ Akyu's Untouched Score vol.1
幺樂団の歴史2 ~ Akyu's Untouched Score vol.2
幺樂団の歴史3 ~ Akyu's Untouched Score vol.3
幺樂団の歴史4 ~ Akyu's Untouched Score vol.4
幺樂団の歴史5 ~ Akyu's Untouched Score vol.5
Immaterial and Missing Power OST
Scarlet Weather Rhapsody OST
Touhou Hisoutensoku OST

Personally, I've been into the series for a while.  I just recently got EoSD, and FINALLY (after several days of trying) got past Cirno (Stage 2 boss) on normal mode.  I could only get past China on easy... I also have been working on MegaMari for a while, and so far have been able to take out Reimu, Cirno, Remilia, and ALMOST Yuyuko...

MegaMari rings a bell, probably seen a video of it on YouTube. Looks like a blast, maybe I should play it...

It's not hard to find and download them via google.  Since they're all actually Doujin Games, there shouldn't be any legal issues either.  In fact, ZUN, the creator, doesn't want the series to be commercialized, so feel free to download the games.  Just remember, even though it's a Megaman Clone, it's still Touhou Hard.

So yeah, I started playing it... I think this will sum up my reaction just fine...

Finally beat a boss with that last one, eh?  Which game in the series?

Post by: leaf on 01, January, 2010, 05:29:23 PM
I've always been a fan of touhou because of the music. In fact, I first found touhou because of a remix by Demetori. I've never tried to get one of the main games running on my comp, but when I tried running IaMP it wouldn't install properly, which was sad.
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Ninja Steve on 01, January, 2010, 05:31:20 PM
I be playin' MegaMari for now, since I happen to be awesome at Mega Man. My skillz didn't translate well, though

Also, no, I still haven't even reached any bosses. I just find the game to be bizarrely satisfying despite my epic fail. I blame the music.
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Rolina on 01, January, 2010, 05:35:54 PM
Yes, touhou music is made of epic win, that's for sure.  Even in MegaMari.

You know, Cirno is EASY in MegaMari.  For example, by running into her, SHE gets hurt, not you!  But her stage on the other hand... uggh... it's one of the toughest to get through.

But yeah, if you get good at MegaMari, Megaman is NOTHING anymore...

So uh... difficulty-wise... how's megamari compared to IWBTG?
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Ninja Steve on 01, January, 2010, 07:23:45 PM
That's a hard call, but seeing as I was able to get somewhere in IWBTG...
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub

Ok. This game scares me now.
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Rolina on 01, January, 2010, 09:11:23 PM
NO!  It's not THAT bad!  IWBTG is WAAAAAY harder!
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Ninja Steve on 01, January, 2010, 09:33:10 PM
I did play IWBTG a lot before I got good decent capable of doing anything, while I just started MegaMari. I'll probably get the hang of this sooner than I did IWBTG. Besides, it really isn't fair to compare much of anything to IWBTG.
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Rolina on 02, January, 2010, 09:50:04 PM
That's because MegaMari is essentially Megaman + Bullet Hell.  If you're good at Shoot-em-ups, you'll actually BENEFIT while playing megamari, simply because you'll know the hitboxes aren't as big as they look, and will quickly learn to exploit it.  Other than that, it's just basic pattern recognition - knowing what spawns where, what movement patterns are, etc... Just like a normal megaman game.

How do you get that to work? Only the Up and Down keys work on mine(so I deleted the .RAR file!). And I've been on a five hour Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream playin' spree earlier today, if you wanna know. Does anyone else play that?

Step one:  Go to your local gaming store
Step two:  Purchase a USB controller
Step three:  PLAY WITH THE USB CONTROLLER.

Seriously, you'll want a USB controller for a wide variety of games - touhou games is merely a few of them.

Is there ANOTHER way of getting it to work? One that doesn't involve me blowing about 20 bucks on something that my idiot little brother will either break or steal and then sell for pot.

Nero... you did try reconfiguring the controls, right? All of the keys work fine where I assigned them to (although for some strange reason I can't do 33B attacks, even though 33A comes out just fine and all other B attacks work fine as well). I really should get a gamepad, since I can't do half-circle commands on keyboard either, which limits my character selection somewhat >_>

Loving sakuya so far, though.

@Lishy: Eh... weather looks annoying and gimmicky. SWR doesn't really interest me that much >_>

Also just d/l'd EoSD and am about to play that now =)

EoSD was the first Touhou game I played. It's good but the only PC's are Reimu and Marisa which kinda pisses me off.

Awesome vid, Atrius.

I finally beat Imperishable Night, and with the Magic Team no less.

TH07.5 (Hard), TH08 (Normal), TH09 (Easy), TH10 (Normal), TH11 (Easy), TH12.3 (Hard), all done.

I wanna face off against some others in Hisoutensoku, but I'm worried I'm not that great.

Always nice to see another touhou fan!  I'll be updating the first post to include 12.3 and 12.5.

So... any speculation as to what we'll see in TH13?  Here's for hoping for more Rumia, Yuuka, and Mima love!

You're joking, right?  PoFV proved that wrong - you can play as freaking Yuuka and still get your @#$% handed to you if you've not built up danmaku skills.

I don't!  Whoever the final/EX boss is, the two would end all of Gensoukyo in their epic battle!  Not even Shino's Reimu or MarisaB would be able stop that fight!

For the sake of my TOHOs, noooo!

That'd be like two falcon punches colliding! It'd be fun to watch that fight, though wouldn't it? Even though they may accidentally kill everyone in the known universe.....
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub

Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Rolina on 27, May, 2010, 03:42:50 PM
Puppetry is a form of godmodding, and you're not Alice, so even then...

I have never, EVER, beaten a touhou game on something harder than normal.  Where'd you get the idea I had from?
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Menaus on 28, May, 2010, 02:39:28 AM
Sorry, I didn't realize that.

I got that idea because your a big fan of the franchise. So naturally I thought you would like to play the game enough to be very good at it, and thus have the ability to beat one of the games at the hardest difficulty.
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Rolina on 28, May, 2010, 12:38:19 PM
I'm a big fan, yes, but I've only recently gotten ahold of the games.

On top of this, the hardest setting is LUNATIC, which... yeah.... I'm kinda... not Asian.  I'd get pwn'd in five seconds flat.

Role, being asian doesn't really help in playing the Touhou games, y'know. Look at me, I get a game over on a stage 3 on lunatic, and that's with continues on and the number of lives set at the highest it can be. Asian people are only good at gaming because they play videogames alot, y'know. It's all becuase asians get games earlier than the rest of the world.
Title: Re: Touhou Project Fanclub
Post by: Hoopa on 28, May, 2010, 05:10:56 PM
Not necessarily... I know some asians who are just naturally good at a lot of videogames.

Nero, what's some of the first comments that show up when someone does an epic feat of gaming?  "I bet they're Asian."

Basically, the culture in Asia is... different than here.  Not sure how, but somehow that allows them to be quite epic at games, in ways that blow us out of the water.

There's no fail here, you WERE playing on LUNATIC. Losing is expected on Lunatic mode.
Hell, I haven't beat a Touhou game on Lunatic, yet.
The closest I got, was last stage on IN.
If you EVER try IN on Lunatic, pick Reimu&Yukari, every other team is just suicide.

I play Touhou on Hard and Normal though. Easy mode is for people who can't handle all those bullets flying around the screen.

I tend to play ALL games on the hardest that is there. I find that touhou on lunatic is all right until stage 3 final. Cirnos homing like attack is annoying though... Also, why if this is a touhou FANCLUB is there someone continously complaining about the game here (XxGameWizardxX) . no offence but if you dont like the game you should probably not announce it in a fanclub...

A=massive understatement.
B=You seem to have forgotten the adjective cute...

I like games that are hard, unless they're puzzle games like mahjong solitaire.
I almost always play on the hardest setting first time round. Usually it's to prevent me getting bored, or having to restart later on the hardest difficulty and lose all progress so far...
Just out of interest, what are peoples favourite touhou characters?

I happen to like Flandre (and Utsuho) a lot(who doesn't), I also like Patchouli and Reimu though... Oh and Marisa (not just because of MasterSpark). Oh and of course...
That meaning, I like all Touhou characters really its not like any of them are actually ugly... Wriggle Nightbug (i think it was Nightbug, was it Nightbug? *shrug* moving on) annoys me though... for some reason...

As horribad as I am at Touhou games, I am a fan. Very much so.

I mostly play Soku at this point. Main Suika, alt Sakuya. Pretty bad at it too, but eh. At least I can beat it on a difficulty that isn't easymodo (haha, easymodo).

Aren't we all:)

I normally play Hisoutensoku when I'm on Windows, otherwise SA. The fighting games don't work on Ubuntu... Unfortunately...

I usually play Marisa or Reimu...

Also, Role, could you please tell me where you got the picture of Yukari from?

The internet.  Specifically, Danbooru.  That's where I get pretty much all my pics.  NSFW warning for when you're looking for it, though.  Use the Rating:S tag.

Danbooru can be a bit of a pain that way. You need to tag rating:safe unless you want flooded with nsfw images, and if you wanna find the good stuff first you have to tag order:score, so that way you don't have to wade through stuff for hours. But each of those count as a tag, and by default you're only allowed two tags, so you wouldn't be able to, say, order:score rating:safe Cirno, unless you paid, which, y'know, is silly.

Man, I miss safebooru.  You know, it could be back, dunno.  Check to see if it is.  Either way, I did get my pic from danbooru, so you'll definitely find it there.  You can try Pixiv too - shouldn't be much harder anymore since they have english language support at Pixiv.

Been Danbooru before you know (oh wait, you didn't...)... lots of my touhou images come from there. And yes, the 2 tags limit is a pain in the ...

I know what you are thinking! A 15 year old guy searching on Danbooru?!
All I can say is:

Great. 455 pages of results when rating:s and yakumo_yukari is searched...

Nice, but when I try to download one of the three parts, it makes my pc lag like hell, ha.

EDIT: I've finally finished downloading the game, I try to play it, and it doesn't work.

Odd.  When it opens, is it in full screen or windowed?  Because on mine the games refuse to play unless they are set to open in full screen mode.  Here's an alternate download for those interested.

Whoa whoa whoa. New Touhou is out!?
I seriously need to get a new keyboard so I can start playing them again. Current one fails to move diagonally when holding shot or focus. It's hopeless.

It goes into fullscreen, then crashes.

Finally decided to try this game out on another PC.
It looks and feels really nice.
Music is nice as always (but it feels like I can hear sections of older songs everywhere)
The gameplay has all the good elements from earlier games, and is surprisingly player-friendly considering what the last two games were like.
AND YOU PLAY AS F***ING YOUMU!!! (I probably won't even look at the other characters now)
And most of the opponents are undead.
This could possibly become my favorite touhou.

I prefer the "sacrificing" of options for bombing more... It makes it more of an "emergency" use as you don't really want to lose power(I assume, can't think of a reason why one would)...

Is it just me or did ZUN use more frames per animation this time? Some of them seem... smoother...

I'd agree with you, I liked that system too, but I think this one works better with how severely the game punishes you for dying - the replaced bombs don't compensate for the loss in power, when it takes as long as it does to get it back. If you increased the rate at which you regain power it would become easy to abuse like in MoF, and if you didn't change it you'd essentially be forced to play a bombless game. Having a limited amount of bombs has made me a little more reluctant to use them, at least (not that I ever liked using bombs >_>).

Oh, and I just came back from "beating" the game on normal. I used all three continues, so bad end... well, I have no idea what it says in the ending anyway.

I noticed yesterday that episode 11 of Koishi Komeiji's Heart-thumping Big Adventure is finally up on youtube. I was a bit disappointed though, as most of it was a recap of events in earlier episodes. Why make a recap when things start making sense? And the art actually looks pretty decent, I hope the author isn't starting to take the series seriously. On the bright side, it looks like there will definitely be a continuation.

I was also surprised that Cirno
didn't survive a knife stab in the head, considering none of her vital organs were damaged.
