Personally, I don't think anything will happen and I'll just laugh at the crazies who come out on that day.

If too many people have faith in something, it just might end up coming true for that very reason. Ofcourse, I strongly doubt the world will end in 2012.

I agree with whizkidhvq on this one. Nothing what-so-ever will happen on that day. No Dead Apostles. No angry aliens. And DEFINATELY no end of the world! Who on earth would believe that the world will end in two years!?!? Not me that's for sure.
Did I mention the sun will burn out and it will be up to some boy with a funny gun that shoots sunlight to save us from being turned into zombies by some vampire chick? That same boy will also have a talking, flying sunflower for a partner.
Also, the world WILL end. But it would have been stopped by now by Chrono, so when it does, we don't even notice it.

Personally, I agree partially with both Atrius and whizkid. End of solstice and crazy people. After all, we do need some of these crazy people off of the streets, and something like them believing in the end of the world in 2012 might be a good way to get some of the stranger people to stay home for a bit.
I have to say though, there was this one movie that I saw a while back... Very strange. I might talk about it in a later post.

Like I said, the world as we know it will definitely end. But it'll be back again as soon as people find something else to be afraid of for no logical reason.

Interesting source, but I noticed that they mention "bloodthirsty Mayans." In my opinion, the Mayans were more developed than even later civilizations, and was one foundation of astrology. They were also a more peaceful race.

Personally I want it to happen, but I don't believe what I want. It's like this, I WANT that to happen, because that's supposed to be the second coming of Jesus (Bible; Revelation). However, I DONT believe that since the bible states that no man knows the time nor the hour in which the lord is going to appear. But I will say what I know and believe what will happen. Just kidding, of course that would have a much more serious impact on the planet, although I don't believe it has been predicted to an exact date. Likely that's just the doom's dayers trying to apply an exact cataclysm predicted only to be likely to happen soon to the date the Mayan calender "ends"
Technically, the world as we know it has ended... Over and over again, with new inventions (or new ways of life, new laws, etc.). For example, the world will never be the same as it was before the first Atomic Bomb (not that many of us remember that date or anything). About 30 years ago, it was also very unlikely for a young boy to grow up into a pretty woman, but this is somewhat possible now. So, the world may end and restart with a new idea.

Something WILL happen in 2012, I just don't think it'll be what people expect. It's either going to be political in nature, or it's going to be self-fulfilling in nature. So either someone's going to be a sore loser and pass something to stick it to the people who said "you're f***ing fired", or it's going to be people panicking and mass looting and rioting on that day as they expect the end of the world (which obviously ain't coming).
Well, there are the looters. I would think that it would mostly be those who honestly believe that something would happen, or for those who are too religious (like the people who worship dieties that hate absolutely everything), but everyone else who is either only peacefully religious or not religious at all should be fine. Of course, if it has something to do with a non-religious belief, like old Cold War foes bringing out their weapons, then I imagine that more people will riot... And then get fined and placed in jail the next day.

I live in Texas. Looters will be shot, and I'll be praised a hero for protecting my stuff.
I live in Canada, so there are probably few people with guns, aside from police officials and the RCMP (and army, but the soldiers only have guns with them when either training or being shipped off to somewhere for no known reason and dying). There are also rod and gun clubs, which would be nice to attend to try my bow out. Basically, if using a gun that you can have with a permit, you can only kill someone else for your personal self defence, but you can not act on suspicion.
Yeah, I decided to add the jailed thing. It will make me laugh with everyone else who was not arrested (or shot) for looting. :happy:

You live in Canada. You shoot the looter, you go to prison and owe the person who was looting your home/shop millions of dollars after he sues you. He walks away with both your cash AND your stuff.
Not quite. I live in Canada. I only try to cause harm if my own life or health are threatened (and I try to contact police first). Looter goes to jail, I get some compensation, looter goes to jail to be tried in criminal court. Our bank system works differently, so any money stolen from myself will be returned to me if it was placed in their bank (if they were to have escaped). If not, I file a counter lawsuit for the looter causing damage to my property, which (if I am correct) will be fought in a civil court. If I have insurance (which also works differently here), I may be insured, which is where most of the compensation comes from. I am not fully sure how I could lose money though... I know that I could lose possessions, but money is a bit different.
If I do harm to the looter without the need for self defence, I can have a lawyer with me in criminal court. There is probably a 90% chance that I will be declared not guilty, but there is also a chance that I may have to pay a fine. I will go to prison of I deal extreme bodily harm or death (unless I can prove that it was self defence, or even defence of other people). If they do not have a weapon, my odds of success in court will be lower. However, as it will likely have been proven that the looter broke into my home, they will also be tried in criminal court. I doubt that they could sue me, as I could just counter them and win.
And we are getting really off topic now. Of course, in the case of rioting and looting, much of what I have explained would likely have to do with this topic, if the rioting and looting is because of the end of the world belief.
So in the end. Panic for the end of the world, looter, breaks in, I defend myself because they have a gun, they go to criminal court, I get compensation from insurance, looter goes to jail. There is no death penalty either, so they will likely get about 2-4 years in prison, for destruction of property and carrying a firearm (all firearms must be licensed, so they will also be in trouble for having a weapon if it is not licensed).
In other words, I am not worried at all about looters. Not to mention that it is even more unlikely to be looted in my apartment, let alone my neighbourhood.

Well, people here use any excuse to loot. Hell, a cop was found guilty for killing a man, and what did they do?
Riot, loot, cause mayhem. I can understand if he was innocent, but he wasn't. They'll riot at the drop of a hat, so I don't see how they won't use this silly superstition to do the same thing. If they try to break down my door, it's a bullet to the elbows, a bullet to the hands, a bullet to each knee, and then I'll berate them for DARING to bleed on MY floor before putting the bullet in their head. As long as the cameras here catch them being the initial aggressor, it's within my rights.
I honestly don't know what's going to happen down there, but there's so many people here in Michigan that could care less (heck, the end of the world almost hit us several times in the last few years with the auto companies lol). Perhaps, if all this mayhem truly pursues Detroit will be a desirable place to live...

Exactly. Well, there is always the chance that we could have a second Cold War. I mean, both the US and the USSR developed so many nuclear weapons during that time period... And pretty much the whole Northern Hemisphere has nuclear technology, with the exception of a few countries in Aisa (and maybe one or two without it in Europe as well). Oh yeah, there are several countries without it in North America as well, mostly from Mexico down.
If there were a second Cold War, there could be a chance that it thaws. Nations would fight if this happens. Of course, so far, it only really seems to be North Korea and a few of the Middle Eastern nations (including Iran) which might want to use their technology for war. Then again, considering how many more weapons some of the less reclusive and more developed countries have... I doubt they have a shot.
So, for the end of the world... Nuclear Haulocost, Outer Space, Mother Nature, or a new invention that just makes the world a better place, and ends it the way that we currently know it? We are starting to have flying cars now, perhaps most people will be able to have them by then?

As I said, 2012 is either a political thing or it's a Self-fulfilling thing. Either it'll happen because of political turmoil, or it's because people are acting on the prophesy itself.

I like the christian belief: Only God knows when the world will end. No man, living or dead, knows what date it is.
Meaning: Since people are always picking new days for the end of days, the world will NEVER EVER END.

The sun is in its solar maxiumus where it is most active with solar flares
it goes through this faze every 12 years and is known to release a flare at least once at some time in the last 3 years of this faze that could wipe out all technology on the planet.
Also the Mayans studied the sun and the stars for thousands and have been considered to have known almost as much about them as us today.
the magnetic layer around the earth is positively charged. and most solar flares are also positively charged and repel each other. there is also a magnetic spin to solar flares and the earth's magnetic layer.
Very rare but if a negatively charged solar flare with a magnetic spin opposite to the earth's were to hit, it would peel off the atmosphere.
Of course we have to deal with this every 12 years (6 years of increase activity, 6 years of decrease) and nothing bad has happed so far.
Over all this is just worrying about things you can't control and there is now a whole lot we could do about it any way.
