I have an idea for a Mercury summon, Tethys. However, I have different sources with slightly different information. One source says that she was in power of what Posiedon controlled after her, while another says that she controlled the fresh-water supply in the major rivers known in Ancient Greece (one of which was the Nile). Here is my idea for her based on what I have read elsewhere.

Tethys: The embodiment of the sea, this titan goddess has the ability to control the currents of water to circulate the oceans, clean the coasts, and replenish the fresh-water of the world.

Garments: Long robes with a winged tiara. No weapon or armour. I suppose her hair could be changed to a bluish tint if needed.

Animation: Huge waves enter the screen from the left and right sides, sweeping over the enemies. At the same time, some of the moisture restores the party.

Effect: Base damage = 15-20% (not sure exactly where), party absorbs about 15-25% of damage (again, not sure about the section).

So, how does this look for Tethys? I tried to incorporate the information that I found from both sources, although I am not fully sure if all of what I found was correct.

Have a nice day.

Edit: From the way things look, anywhere from 3-5 Mercury djinn (depending on how you want to use the values, or which ones you want to use). Also, she is purely Mercury according to the sources, although I can see where you might be able to fit another element in.

How about Aphrodite? She could appear and inflict the charm status. You know... with floating pink hearts and such.

Oh yeah, I noticed that after the post. I suppose it could just be pure damage then. As for the second element, we can also look at other things with the same name. So far, we have a prehistoric ocean (already Mercury), but we also have the moon, Tethys. Would it be possible to attribute an element based on either a star or a moon?

Have a nice day.

Edit: I like your binding suggestion, from the chatbox. It would suit Tethys well (although the type of binding could be a bit confusing).

Only mono-elementals are pure damage, though.

Star or moon?  Why, JUPITER, OF COURSE!  Okay, I'm editing her in now.

Cool. Also, I know that the Roman equivalent of him is already used as the Mars element itself, but what about Ares? Considering he is the god of war (and has a Greek name), could he be used as a Mars summon? Basically, he comes into view, forces his sword into the ground beside the enemies to cause an explosion, and leaves. I can see at least 2 :Mars: and either 1 :Jupiter: or :Venus:. Not sure what the secondary effect would be though.

Edit: Removed Aphrodite to save her for a later post (credit to Whizkid for giving me ideas on how Aphrodite could look for her animation).

Also, wasn't "Styx" named Charon in Golden Sun?

Have a nice day.

Title: Re: Golden Sun Empires needs your help!
Post by: Rolina on 15, September, 2010, 06:49:36 PM
Charon happens to be the Trickster Goddess of Luna in GSHC lore - the lore conflict forced the change.  She's an optional superboss, not a summon.

Similar with Meteor - in NO WAY is it mythological.  Vulcan is, and via GS BS, the "Meteor", it turns out, was an egg... with a Cosmic Space Dragon inside!  Basically, imagine a Red Fusion Dragon in place of the meteor, as if using Outer Space.

I want to avoid Duplicate Deities - So no Athena, no Aphrodite, no Hermes, no Ares, and no Zeus for starters.

Okay, good to know (although my idea for Aphrodite was like a Venus Coatlicue, but it probably is not needed right now). I am trying to think of some ideas that are not Roman or Greek, although my ideas are slim right now. I suppose I can get back to you later with ideas.

Have a nice day.

Edit: I have an idea! It has several names, but the one that I will present is Kanmare. Kanmare is basically known in English as the Rainbow Serpent, and was an Australian aboriginal belief for quite some time. The only problem is that I think it is Mercury based (in control of the supply of water), and it was often looked to for healing (says sources). It is associated with the Rainbow. The only problem with the snake is that there are very few records of it compared to what other societies or groups believed in.

Ah, I see.  Well, the Venus Coatlique grants the "FreshSpring" status, which causes bad effects to disappear twice as fast (duration is half of normal, rounded to the nearest whole number).  So keep that in mind when looking for a cute chick to grant the benefit. XD

Hades - God of the dead.

Earth and Fire

Animation: The ground opens up (maybe? He is from the underworld, afterall.), and Hades comes up to cast fire.

Special Effect: Chance for Death Status?

The icon could be a skull or something..?

As for visual appearance... uhh..

Maybe?

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out, though.. if you can't use Death Status.. maybe Haunt or something would work.

Not sure where this would fit in the Summons list, but... well atleast I tried.. oh well...

On another note, I want to congratulate y'all on the work y'all have done so far.

Hellfire.  I rather like that idea.  Yay!  A NON-DRAGON MARS SUMMON!

Though, death is Charon Styx's shtick.  4x Reaper basically means that there's a chance for death, but also a chance for 3 turn reaper, 2 turn reaper, and 1 turn reaper.

We have Delude/Blind and many stat reductions still, perhaps one of those?

Also, what do you think of a black/hellish flame?

Alright then... how about Balder? He would appear and grant his summoner some of his protection. So for the animation... kind of like an aura envelops the person? It would grant something like Wall or Barrier.

The biggest name in irish myth (even more popular than Dullahan) (That is if your open to a wider range of cultural myths.

1 Deimne (otherwise or more widley known as Fionn mac Cumhaill) pronounced, Finn Mac Cool

Earth and Wind

Animation: several warriors appear in a circle around the enemy with Fionn standing tallest)

icon: Warriors Helmet or a sword

I like this bit of his story:

Accounts of Fionn's death vary; according to the most popular, he is not dead at all, rather, he sleeps in a cave below Dublin, surrounded by the rest of the Fianna clan. One day they will awake and defend Ireland in the hour of her greatest need.

Baldur's Gate is what thinking of.  It's based in D&D.

Anywho, I'll need more info on him to know what to do.  Ditto on his pops.

@Maxi:  Really?  It's more popular?  Because I've heard of Dullahan, but not of this guy.  The dood's a total enigma to me.  Sounds like a King Aurthur Expy, though - since he'll return during the hour of Brittain's greatest need, according to legend.  Still, worth looking into - if not for a summon, then DEFINITELY for equipment.  If Aurthur is Jupiter and Odysseus is Mars, that leaves two more elements to represent great heroes of epic legend...

depends were ya from like, like i never knew Dullahan was from irish culture till not long ago after a GS search, but everyone in Ireland is told stories of Fionn mac Cumhaill and even Cú Chulainn. So if ya get me, to us they are best known names but outside not much. The american band Dropkick Murphys did a song The legend of finn maccumhail whilst the film boondocks saints main theme is entitled Blood of Cú Chulainn.

Cú Chulainn I know from FFT and FF12, but I didn't know of Fionn.  The Poison Esper.  I suspect it suffers from Shiva Syndrome.

Still, linking me to a Wiki article does nothing.  I see wall of text, remember I haven't slept in 24 hours, and close the tab.  I need Cliffnotes here.

You... don't know about Odin? He's basically the ruler of the Norse gods. He rules Valhalla, the place where fallen heroes are taken to prepare for the final battle, Ragnarok.

Anyway, Baldr is one of Odin's son. He was known as "The Beautiful" Odin and his wife Frigga knew that eventually something horrible would happen to him, so they asked everything on earth to swear not to harm him. All but the mistletoe agreed. Through a series of unfortunate events, he is killed by his own brother when Loki tricks him into throwing a dart of mistletoe at Baldr.

As for legendary heroes... How about Perseus for Venus? He slayed medusa, and with it can turn anyone he wants into stone. It'd inflict something like sprain or stun since there isn't petrification.

I don't know as much as I do about Thor, and even then, my Norse mythos knowledge is really poor.  I know OF them, and know a general gist.  But details that matter for this project I know not about.

Also, what did I JUST SAY about wikis?

Perseus would be neat, but I would think that Medusa's head should be more of an item than a summon. After all, that would be like summoning Ganon to use the Triforce, or summoning the god Yoshi to throw an explosive egg at the enemy (as we all should know that Yoshi has almost as much power as Zeus, but his father is Miyamoto (who also spawned the titans Mario and Link)).

Ooh, Odin sounds cool!

Have a nice day.

No, the Medusa thing would get him the Gorgon Blade or something, as a reference to him.  The SUMMON, on the other hand, would pick up the related Venus aspect when he attacks.

Pendragon would be Jupiter element thanks to Excalibur, for example.
The name of Ulysses's blade would have a Mars unleash.

This is what I'm talking about - a weapon and a summon it represents.  How cool would that be?

Minerva (Etruscan: Menrfa, or Menrva) was the Roman goddess whom Hellenizing Romans from the second century BC onwards equated with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, magic, and the inventor of music. She is often depicted with an owl, her sacred creature and is, through this connection, a symbol of wisdom.

In many other games, she is depicted as an extremely powerful character with unbelievable magical power.  She has two appearances, one from a game and the other from pictures, however both are relatively close.  She has hair that drapes around her shoulders.  In the games, she is depicted as a blond, in photographes, a brunette.

Old pictures of her show her wearing a simple white cloth robe with leaves in her hair.  However, recent photographs show her in actual combat armor holding a staff.  The head is a ring with many points coming out through the ring from the center and out.

For an in game summon, I would suggest she be a healing summon or an elemental summon.  (Probably an ice summon since she abuses that move a lot in a few games I've played that had her.)

Midgard Serpent (Named also Jormungand) is one of the sons of Loki and is a giant serpent that was believed to be big enough to wrap around the world and bite onto his own tail.  If he lets go of his tail, it's supposed to bring the end of the world.  He spits out poison from his mouth as well.  Perhaps he could be used for a poison or vemon status type summon?  Anyways, he's a giant serpent with what appears to be flaps on each side of his head.  Here's a pic of him fighting Thor.

Ok if its about mythology then how about:
*From the Norse Mythology and the game Valkyrie Profile*
Valkyrie:  Mercury(im not sure about this its either Mercury or Jupiter) summon. Or we can name her Hrist (sounds more like a summon now).
Damage = 12% with instant death effect (since she can choose who to die and whom not to)
Alfheim:  A bow made of special wood and is one of Odin's artifacts. Venus summon.
Damage = 15% or 10% if we can have a defense ignore effect (50%)
Fenrir: A wolf and is the son of Loki (><) we can have him as a Dual Summon of Venus and Mars or maybe a Null elemental summon?.
Damage = 20% (pure damage)

If you liked the idea of the bow we can also have the demon sword Niflheim or Levantine (same sword with two names). And if you are looking for dragons then we can use Bloodbane.

Please change as you see fit since I guessed the elements.
Also I will try to look for more (not just myths right?)

Dullahan is an enemy too (boss) and we can get it as a summon psynergy. but again its just a suggestion.

True, true.  But to be safe, I will avoid posting already listed enemies for summons.

Höðr: (Often times called Hod) one of the norse gods who was tricked by Loki into killing Baldr.  He was a blind god and the weapon he used to kill Baldr was a bow.  Perhaps he could be used to cause delusion with his attack?

Neptune:  (also called Poseidon) Mercury attack.  He has a trident and is on a horse, he controls water obviously.  Perhaps he can cause a whirlpool or massive amounts of water to fall on the enemies.

...you do know that neptune is already the lv3 mercury summon, right? Which makes it a bit odd that poseidon was a boss, but w/e.

Anyway, greek and roman mythology are great and are what the majority of stuff in GS is based on, but if you're gonna come up with so many new summons, you're probably gonna have to look to other places. Egypt and the americas both have some great stuff to pull from, as well as the already mentioned norse mythology.

Leaf has a point, but a major problem with many of the indigenous groups is that several of them believe in spirits more than dieties. For example, Egypt and Greece had gods, but the tribes of North America mostly had spirits (like the spirit of the tree, or the spirit of the hawk). Of course, there are symbols and other minor beings that reflect their beliefs.

Have a nice day.

@Minerva: Except that in Golden Sun, the combo of Wisdom, Song, and Owl-thematics would make her a Jupiter Summon, not a Mercury Summon.  I also remember her wielding a SPEAR, not a staff - this is my favorite Greko-Roman goddess you're talking about here.  Minerva, AKA Athena, would definitely be Jupiter.  However...

That still leaves the question:  What would the actual attack animation look like?  Is she wielding wind, lightning, or celestial energies?  Plenty can be done...

But we're not looking to other games for what the attack would be.  We're looking to ACTUAL HISTORY AND MYTHOLOGY.

Jormungand sounds like it's got great possibilities, though we've already got Azul (though it'll probably be renamed Leviathan or something so it has a mythical connection).  It looks like it'd make an amazing boss in hacks, though, I really wanna look into it.

Alfheim is a weapon, and a ranged one at that.  Sorry, no go.

Valkyrie is too generic, though, since there were tons of them.  Perhaps something more specific, though, like one of the more well known ones, such as Verdandi.

Fenrir is an enemy.  No go.

Dullahan:  We can already do that, genius.  There's a psynergy called (wait for it) CALL DULLAHAN.  Do your research.

Neptune:  DID YOU EVEN PLAY THE GAMES?!

Hod:  Possibly.  We already have an archer in Atalanta, though, so like with Jormungand, I'll keep it in reserve.

Invidia:  Greeko-Roman Goddess of envy, often dressed in green, and known as the "green eyed monster".  As green and brown are attributed to Venus, I'll make her the one to inflict ParseeEye.  Summon icon is obvious:  A green eye!

Ymir: Father of the Frost Giants in norse mythos.  He'll be the one to inflict frostblight status.  No idea what to do for the icon, though.  Taking ideas.

Kadlu: either one goddess or three sisters who presided over thunder.  Will be the one that inflicts staticcurse.

Akka: Finnish earth mother and goddess of the harvest.  Venusian answer to Coatlicue - grants Freshspring status

Hera: Greek goddess of matrimony and cycles of women's growth.  Also represents love, the moon, element of Air, and motherhood.  Jovian answer to Coatlicue - grants Wellspring status.

Fuchi: Japanese goddess of fire, both of the hearth and of volcanic eruptions. Protectress of the home, cures illness. Fire answer to Coatlicue - grants the Purespring status.

Intersesting... Verdandi, Urd, and Skuld are the Valkyries that control fate... I smell a new equipment trio in the future, mirroring Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos!

Renenet: the Egyptian Goddess whom protects children.  Figure it can be handwaved to be the Defense MAX summon.  Venusian due to Ramses - blame him/it.

Dana: patroness of wizards, rivers, water, wells, prosperity, magick, and wisdom.  Figure she'd be the Willpower MAX summon.

Well for the Valkyrie i choose Hrist, one of the known Valkyries. and in case you don't like the name how about Eir or Hildr? or you can use one of the names you know since i don't know of the name that you suggested (Verdandi first time i hear about it) so its your call.

Hermes: Messenger of the Gods to guide the spirits to the underworld, Found in Greek myths. In the roman adaptation he was identified with the roman god of Mercury. So we can have him as a mercury summon.

Apollo: God of light and fire(sometimes life as well) , so we can have him as a mars summon. He is one of the Olympian deities. Found in both Roman and Greek myths.

Osiris (Usiris): an Egyptian god also named as Asar, known as the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead.

Selene: Lunar deity (or Moon Goddess) so we can have her as a Jupiter summon. Found in Greek myths.

Artemis: twin sister of Apollo and is the goddess of animals and is shown holding a bow. We can have her as a Venus summon.

Hecate: is a chthonic Greek-Roman goddess associated with magic and lunar lore. We can have her as a Jupiter summon.

Thoth: God of protection and is an Egyptian god. Null-elemental, maybe we can have him cast guard and ward to increase resistance?

And i will try to look for more since we seem to need a lot ......

Verdandi, popularized by Ah, my goddesss! along with Urd and Skuld.  Apparently, they're the Norse fates.  Trust me, more people know of them than of the ones you mentioned, even if Verdandi was mis-translated as Belldandy.  Nice job with that FAIL, localization team...

Oi, genius, Hermes = Mercury.  It's the level 1 summon.

Good idea with Apollo.  Isn't he the sun chariot guy as well?

Osiris... really doesn't have a elemental attachment. May assign him venus.

Artemis/Diana... another bow wielder.  Again, gonna put her into reserve.  Also note that she's associated with the MOON, which would make her Jupiter, due to the celestial link.

Selene was a titan, not a goddess.  Get your facts right.

Hecate... another jupiter one...

Thoth may work better than Renenet, may swap them out.  Also:

NO NULL-ELEMENTAL, AND NO PURE-DAMAGE.  WE ALREADY HAD THOSE DONE.

Post by: Griever on 17, September, 2010, 05:10:01 AM
Actually role, Selene is both a goddess (Deity in fact) and a Titan she is a moon goddess and daughter of the titans Hyperion and Theia.
and about the null elemental and pure damage im gonna keep that in mind. and about Hermes is not mercury but you are the boss ^_^

Oh and since you know more about the Valkyrie, Verdandi is alright with me. and btw i didn't read nor watch Ah, my goddesss! but i have heard of it.

Actually, I decided to use them as an equipment set.

I see, I had thought Diana was the moon goddess...

Quote from: WikipediaIn the Roman adaptation of the Greek religion (see interpretatio romana), Hermes was identified with the Roman god Mercury, who, though inherited from the Etruscans, developed many similar characteristics, such as being the patron of commerce.
Yes he is.

Egyption Deity, Khnum: Lord of Cool Waters.  A very ancient deity. As a water god he was closely associated with the annual flooding of the Nile. His name means to create.  He was the creator of all things that are and all things that shall be. He created the gods and he fashioned mankind on a potters wheel.  He has the body of a man, but the head of a ram.  He could be a mercury summon.

Fūjin is the Japanese god of the wind and one of the eldest Shinto gods. He is said to have been present at the creation of the world and when he first let the winds out of his bag, they cleared the morning mists and filled the Gate between heaven and earth so the sun shone.

He is portrayed as a terrifying dark demon, resembling a red headed black humanoid wearing a leopard skin, carrying a large bag of winds on his shoulders.

Raijin is a god of thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology. His name is derived from the Japanese words rai and shin. He is typically depicted as a demon beating drums to create thunder, usually with the symbol tomoe drawn on the drums.

Raijin is sometimes credited with eating the navels or abdomen of children, and in the event of thunder, parents traditionally tell their children to hide their navels so that they are not taken away. Raijin's companion is the demon Raiju.

Raijū, "thunder animal" or "thunder beast" is a legendary creature from Japanese mythology. Its body is composed of either lightning or fire and may be in the shape of a cat, tanuki, monkey, or weasel. The form of a white and blue wolf (or even a wolf wrapped in lightning) is also common. It may also fly about as a ball of lightning or fire (in fact, the creature may be an attempt to explain the phenomenon of ball lightning). Its cry sounds like thunder.

Raiju is the companion of Raijin, the Shinto god of lightning. While the beast is generally calm and harmless, during thunderstorms, it becomes agitated and leaps about in trees, fields, and even buildings (trees that have been struck by lightning are said to have been scratched by Raiju's claws).

Another of Raiju's peculiar behaviors is sleeping in human navels. This prompts Raiden to shoot lightning arrows at Raiju to wake the creature up, and thus harms the person in whose belly the demon is resting. Superstitious people therefore often sleep on their stomachs during bad weather, but other legends say that Raiju will only hide in the navels of people who sleep outdoors.
