Title: Activity - The Power of Posters
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 18, October, 2012, 09:52:37 PM
This topic is for listing people who post each month.  It's sad that it appears we don't already have a topic like this here.  Kind of wish this type of information was in the statistics, but oh well.

Perhaps listing the number of posts they make in each month could be considered?

This seems like a nice idea Teawater. I'm for it. It might actually be easier to write a plug-in that gathers the data itself through the SQL database and displays it on a page. But with our main admin and dev pretty busy atm, that seems like a pipe dream.

Thus, why I say Atrius should recruit a friend to be Admin and take care of the forum stuff.  He said he can handle it, but, well, the military keeps him way too busy.

Leaf, keep the witty comments to yourself. If this was a hate thread, I'm pretty sure we would know about it.

Real mature, I get down-voted for trying to defend someone -.-

Takumi, don't mini mod.  Leaf, don't antagonize people.  Role, you saw how that worked last time.

Post by: Rolina on 23, October, 2012, 02:25:01 AM
Not really, no.  Last time was Charon, and she was hardly what I was asking for.  I specifically stated in the original version of this was someone without ties to the forum, preferably who was familiar with SMF and knew how to program all the various features people want for the forums.  Basically, I don't want another Charon.  I want another Atrius.
Title: Re: People Who Post
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 23, October, 2012, 03:42:06 AM
Another Atrius could mean another busy admin.  In my mind, I can see another guy doing what is needed for the forums, but then after awhile he could get to the point of being too busy for the forums.   I think what we want is someone who has the determination, motivation, and willpower to stay and frequently update the forums.  Someone like Atrius, but actually having the time for forum updates.

Who here has the most potential for being the second admin, anyway?  I understand that whoever has the most potential will probably still not be suited enough, but just wondering.  Now that Salanewt has left, I'm at a blank for the time being.

Also, to stay on topic, I've added Robert Joe to the list.

I meant this discussion.  Sorry to say but I doubt you're going to get another Atrius, let alone another admin.  I myself have asked about this and got nothing.  The fact that our head admin is a programmer is a boon but getting a second one to take care of the site?  That person would most likely prefer to get paid.  Besides, aside from minor features that are not necessary, there's not enough members to really warrant a second admin.

Look at it this way, the site is close to dead and its members are leaving.  I would not trust anyone else I didn't know, experienced or not, as a second admin and I believe quite strongly that Atrius feels the same way.  I mean, he could get a friend of his to do it but that ties into the fact does he know anyone with the skills, the time and the drive.  If a second admin is to be chosen I will leave it entirely up to Atrius.  As for qualified members here, the only one that comes to mind is Sala and he left.

I dunno if anyone noticed, but people started leaving the site when Charon left. Not before. An active, fun-loving Admin is crucial to keeping a forum alive. We really do need another Charon, though preferably one who deals with antagonistic forum members in a more mature fashion.

Also, fairly certain leaf's comment was in fact a compliment, directed at Rolina.

Claiming someone's just nagging is never a complement, Jamie.

Somehow, his use of :awe: implies that it was meant to be a compliment somehow. I can think of ways that implying some random member can get away with nagging the admin could be a compliment.

Yeah we lost a few members when Charon left.  A few more are still interested in leaving for various reasons.  But this isn't the time or place to get into that.

I've only posted once this month?  Yikes...

Even though I know people experienced with SMF they have no interest in Golden Sun, so they're not really suitable.  Having an admin that doesn't actually care about the forums would do no good.

Two things.  First, I have to say this because of some sort of OCD I have, but "compliment" is the appropriate spelling.  "Compliment" is something done to make another feel better about themselves, "complement" is something that works well with something else.  Second, I'd offer to help out with the forums, but I have 2 projects of my own and I'd have to research SQL again.  Back on topic, though, I'm slightly shocked to find my name in this list.  That is all.

I agree with the first part, but, in my opinion, that last part ruined it.

Considering Takumi's history I can see leaf's annoyance.  However I must ask that you please don't curse.

If someone has a problem with cursing, they can turn on censors in their profile. It's not my job to censor my speech for them.

You're on a public site with other users who might possibly be underage.  While that sounds unlikely and lame, it's still good practice and I'd rather not have to warn you for something this trivial.

Aye, ideally we'll want someone who's both.  If you ever come to trust someone who's qualified for both, that'll be a great boon for the site.

List has been updated! With the exception of Early-November, since I forgot to record them before they fell off the Notification list.

December seems to be a bit slow, so to stay ahead, I decided to record what we have now for December.

I'm just going to post and see how this goes

@Leaf - Damn. But true

@O. Kain - In the name of Kain and the Brotherhood of nod...We confiscate all the money that is inside this forum.  Resist and you will be punished..or something...(References, heh heh.)

Anyways, my interest kills itself off and it comes back.  So I have no clue what I'm even doing on this website anymore.  An extra Admin would be a horrible waste.

Basically this place is just a Ghosttown, and I'm not even sure if anyone would really agree with me.  The only thing I see are minor discussions, flaming, lack of interest, and overall, there's just no spirit here and it has been that way since I joined and it continues to get worse (At least from my perspective.).

It only not active because people like you just don't post or reply. there was almost a point where I couldn't reply because I was the last to reply on almost every topic. when I see activity is low I come up with a new topic and every now and then that gets things going again for a little bit.

Hmm... I had an idea about bolding or color coding these different colors depending on the number of consecutive months the members have been active.

For example...
Red = One consecutive month.
Orange = Two consecutive months.
Yellow = Three consecutive months.
Green = Four Consecutive months.
Bold Green = Five or more consecutive months.

Just a thought...

Disregard quantity at all times.

I know, I know. - This topic is about activity, not necessarily about usefulness.

Edit: It also helps see who didn't post, as well. Which is a wonderful advantage. (AKA: Zero-Quality) Which is what this topic started out as, but then I decided to add the numbers for ordering. (People with one or two posts almost don't deserve to be in the list, regardless of average quality... unless for some reason they have a moderately long post.)

But in terms of stats, it'd be interesting to be able to categorize posts based what was posted about, rather than who posted.

Maybe that would be worth trying one day? (But it might take more time?) For now, you can just click the "Show the last posts of this person." that you see in Member Profiles... Atleast you know which members to look at when we have an active members list. (Or you could go the old fashion way and view all the forums.)

They popped off the Recent Posts list, that's what happened to them. But yeah, you posted quite a few posts on Jan. 3rd that didn't get counted on my list because it was before the specified time. I suppose I should go and update all those numbers to include the entire month for each member... - which I might do later in the month.

just figured out how to look at forum stats a few days ago.  Those are amazing!  Is that normal for forums, or did Atrius or whomever do some custom coding for the site?
Title: Re: Activity - The Power of Posters
Post by: Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas on 13, January, 2014, 11:32:18 PM
Normal for SMF forums, I believe. If it was something non-trivial that Atrius added, I have a feeling it would have been posted in the News & Announcements forum. (For example, Atrius once added the Downloads section. Also, I think the Cbox was an add-on as well... both are likely from third-party add-ons that he didn't make from scratch himself.)

Pretty cool.  I used Geocities back in the day to make some websites, but I really didn't know how to make good use of their widgets and add ons.  I kind of wished I tried to make a forum, rather than page-based sites, but I guess I sort of moved on to other interests before then.  I was also pretty busy with school, and tended to spend my free time doing stuff other than socializing (on the web).

But these forums are pretty awesome.  I can see why someone would want to keep them around, even if they're not used all that much...  I kind of want to try my hand at it now...
