Hi all! I have been lurking here for a little bit and the stuff you guys do around here seems interesting so I decided to join. I've been a long time fan of the Golden Sun series (I have not played Dark Dawn, but from what I hear, I'm not missing too much). I used to be apart of Golden Sun Realm's Forumplanet forums a very long time ago (over 10 years) and I recently joined back up with them at Golden Sunrise last month, but I'm also quite interested in the technical side of things here. ^^

I haven't done much with the editor, however I am attempting to make a Golden Sun fan-game and the editor is quite useful for giving me the statistics of enemies and so on. ^^

Anyways, even though things appear pretty quiet around here I hope to meet some new people and be apart of the community! :)

Thank you for the warm welcome! :happy:

I'm not really making a hack for the game, but more of a re-creation of the original games. I eventually want it to be online multiplayer, so you can team up with other Adepts to solve puzzles, explore the world, and also battle each other. I'm trying to make it feel like the original games by using the same sprites, sounds and effects. ^^

And.. no, I don't think so. xD Salanewt is confuzzled, maybe?

Ooo, I remember reading through that topic! Did it ever go anywhere? It seems like it kind of died off. o.o

I realize the project sounds kind of ambitious. XD Currently, i'm just aiming for a working battle system (against AI), then against other people, and then see where it goes from there.

Ah, that's cool! I remember Atrius and Kioll each trying to make something like that a while ago, and they looked like pretty cool concepts.

Thanks everyone! And I will make sure to read the rules! I'm not sure if I can post a link to my project (It's a flash thingy, so you can play in browser), but if I can I'll gladly post so you guys can check it out. ^^

I took a look at what Atrius (I found some flash demo thingies of the overworld and stuff) and Kioll had done, but it looks like those projects never took off / finished. So hopefully I can fill in the gap there. XD

I think the way it works here is that you can't post commercial/copyrighted ROMs...

Even if you couldn't post links, I think you can still tell us what you named it so we can search for it.)

A Google search of "formina golden sun fan-game", didn't get me anywhere.

It's not a ROM - its a flash game that I made, but it does contain sprites and sounds from Golden Sun. So i'm not sure if its legal or not. Atrius posted some flash demos before, so I assume I should be okay to do it? o.o

Yeah, I know you said it was Flash... I was just saying what I know...

Also, Atrius has a whole set of Golden Sun Sprites on his server that you can access via a certain BBCode... that along with his Flash demo(s)/etc... makes me think you are okay to post a link..

There might be some posts on this forum containing conversation between me and Atrius on the sprites, but I forget where it was... the gist was that it was a touchy subject/gray area or something...? My memory is probably foggy, but I take it that it was okay.

Okay, here it is! https://db.tt/R4Jfs9wQ (https://db.tt/R4Jfs9wQ). I've been working on it for a couple of weeks now so it's nowhere near complete. The controls are the same as the default for VBA.. so your A button is "Z", B button is "X". Arrow keys to move around and navigate menus.

Currently the only thing you can do is open up the menu and battle against another party (By selecting the Battle option from the menu). Currently, you can attack and there is (very limited) Psynergy available. It's still kinda buggy and there's lots of things to fix up, so go easy on me! :happy:

Seems alright for a start. Keep up the good work.

The first thing I noticed was Isaac moves slow. (Or is that just me?)
I also noticed some layer-problems.. Isaac standing on a tree? Hmm... and the menu icon to the right of the active icon seem to be on top....

I see you have it so that you can rotate the camera with L and R. (A and S on the keyboard.) I wonder if you read a post I made once about me finding an unused/hidden  feature inside GS's code that does the same thing...

Slow on the map? I can always increase the speed of him. ^^ I haven't compared the speed against the original game just yet. And yeah, layering problem needs to be fixed. XD I've just been busy with the battle system at the moment.

Ooh, you found the hidden feature! XD Was that you who posted that patch? It was very helpful in writing the rotational code and being able to compare it with the original, thank you! ^^ I will take that feature out later on, it was mainly meant to test if the rotation system was working. :3

@Slow: Maybe? Can't tell at the moment, but that was my first impression.

@Patch: If you are talking about The Battle Camera Rotation Patch that's in the Downloads section, then yes. I also did The Jump Patch.

The Battle Camera Rotation Patch - I didn't get any assistance for, if I remember correctly.
The Jump Patch - There were some details by Atrius that he once gave to Salanewt, and then that got to me... and that's how I made it...

Reminds me of the flash golden sun port Atrius made (don't know the topic however)
He basically imported GS in flash. Unfortunately he never did something with it as far as I know.

i noticed the music doesn't loop that well.
however i see that as an easy fix, since you can just cut the song somewhere in the middle where it matches up and have it loop there, instead of ending for a few seconds then restarting.

just an idea on something i noticed.
all in all i think its good. one of the best things I've seen done not using the actual game.
has potential. though i'm not sure how some people on the site feel about flash.

Hey, thanks everyone! :heart:

I chose Flash because it seems to run pretty well in most common browsers and I didn't really want people to download an .exe as people would be far less inclined to try it out. Right now the current priority is to make the Battle System look & feel like the original games (as close as possible), but I will probably be modifying some of the mechanics and damage formulas to try and create a more balanced experience (If you have ideas, I would love to hear them). I want the main focus to be PvP battles (Like the linked battle Arena) so I want there to be cool and interesting strategies, but it'd be cool to have some interesting Boss battles as well for those who want a different sort of challenge too.

PvE battles are going to be easier to implement though, so i'll be getting those done first. Just finishing up Psynergy and then polishing up the small things - the little diamond cursor thing, the little hand cursor when you choose Psynergy, the layering issues and so on. The music is only temporary - I may remove it for the meantime as it adds a lot to the file size of the file. :happy:

Once I get all of that working, I want to add in some Multiplayer support (which will be difficult, so this part may take some time), so you can walk around in Town, chat and battle with each other! Then I can start adding in new features based on what people want. ^^

Well, you could just make most enemies harder. I always thought GS is just a bit too easy...

About PvP battles: Multiple More Characters could be a thing. Otherwise you would end up having a lot of the same parties battle each other.
About boss battles: Perhaps a new boss that uses status effects like Dullahan.

Oh that's something I can rip I guess. I have the redcrystal already if you need it.

If you have the Red Crystal already ripped, that would be wonderful, it'll save me lots of time! There's also a targeting crystal thing that appears when you target a character which I need as well! Should I create a separate topic for this so we can collate discussion and ideas there?

When you say more characters, do you mean like, being able to choose more than one / two of one type of Adept? Or do you mean parties of 5+ people? I also want to give everyone at least 2 moves per turn, as it may make Defend a bit more attractive to use (50% reduction against incoming damage vs doubling your heal / damage output). Thoughts?

Yeah sure, I'll rip the target thingy than. You can find the crystal and and the hand in the attachments.
Unfortunatly they don't appear on spriters-resource yet for some kind of reason.

Also yes. Create a new topic I guess in The Community>Creative Works.

Well just more choice. So instead of the 8 from the GS games, maybe 16 or something like that?
About the double turn: You really need to rebalance the system in that case. If you leave it like this, my signature will surely apply for your game and I'm not sure if you want that...
