As you know I can do some stuff with images, but I don't have much time. The only experience I have with GM is... well uhh... almost nothing.
I ripped a metroid fangame. That's all.
Gale looks like an OK editor for sprites, but I'm not sure if it's plugin compatible. And that can be a difference.
Lord Wolfram, I suggest you look up if you can easily import your sprites made with Gale by GM. If importing is hard, you might as well make the sprites in GM. Paint.net is not really the best tool for animations, but can come in handy for maps or other pictures (which can be a pain to make in GM).
2D games with good sprites:
- Treasure of the Rudras (amazing animation for a SNES game)
- Live a Live ( has a ton of different sprites)
Furthermore, I recommend you look through the GM or Yoyo forums for good sheets.
And BTW, do you mean only platform games or also top-down?

And so the story starts
many tales tells as about forces of evil and light but this story is about despair and agony.
this story is about a person called Wolfram.story will take place in 2016...in Wolfram's 18 birthday.
Wolfram: Ahh it fells so good.Wolfram looks at his watch 06:30! Must hurry!
It was normal school day for him but something today was difrent. Today he was celebrating his birthday and all class was happy.
Wolfram was in 11 grade and his lessons wasn't easy at lunch time he ate his lunch and then his friend Timo spoke.
Timo:hey, how is it to be an adult?
Wolfram:Adult?Nah, nothing special.You are only a bit older.
Timo:I see.You are still small child.
Wolfram:ahahaha....
during our convensation other classmates were about to leve and so i get up and left too.
I walked to school from cafe and I heard a voice. it was my friend Lucy...
Wolfram:Lucy? What a suprise.
Lucy:what?You didn't wanted to see me?I see I am bothering you.
Wolfram:No! I meen I do. wait...
Lucy:As always you are easy to warp around my finger..
Wolfram:again? Lucy when you will stop doing this.
Lucy:Can I call you Wolfy?
she all of sudden warped around me and whispered im my ear.
Lucy:happy birthday Wolfy.
and then sudenly wolfram felt pain from back.
Wolfram:ahhfalls
Lucy:who are you?what did you do to him?
Alexander:I am Alexander. and I did nothing to Wolfram. he will get up and will be ok because he is a demon.
Wolfram:What?Don't be redicules. such a thing doesnt exist.
Alexander:oh realy umm how about it. if I dare to do this.
Lucy:Wolfy help me.
Alexander:look at yourself.as the time seal is broken your power is once again free.
Wolfram: that means...
Lucy:Wolfy...what is he talking about?
Alexander:I waited 18 years to finaly take you to my aid.join me and we will rule this world togader. we will destroy this world and build new in this place.
Wolfram:That is not happening.
Alexander:My mansion is over there. If you want to save her you mustcome to my place.And no police! or she will die.You have three days.
Lucy:Wolfy save me!
Ahh what a sudden situation.Ewrything was allright but then all of sudden he apeared. what is meaning of this this pain is now crushing Wolfram.
what will happen to him remains in shadows.

I don't know if you can get the sprites for it, but some webgames have good sprites.
You might even find a castlevania clone that uses custom sprites.
