Title: Golden Sun TLA Maniac Mode Patch
Post by: Zach on 04, October, 2009, 06:47:00 PM
Golden Sun TLA Maniac Mode!

Background Information
-------------------------------------------
After feeling that this game was a little too easy, I felt like it should be harder (though at some parts, I am going a little overboard) and funner at other parts. The difficulty is on the high side and to get past the 4 scripted battles in the beginning of the game, you have to use the 4 oil drops that I put in your inventory. This hack is done all the way up prior to the Shaman Village. Without further ado, I present to you, my (in-progress) difficulty patch.

Golden Sun TLA Maniac Mode Version 1.2  (http://www.sendspace.com/file/zkg5v3)

Changes
---------------
~You can use nearly all of your items in battle
~Weapons are more useful now
~Weapons cost more (due to usefulness, but money shouldn't be a problem after a while)
~Difficulty is SPIKED!
~When you fight a Djinni, they will NEVER be alone
~Most of the classes (except for the Hermit series, classes that requires items, and the tri-elemental classes since they have not been edited yet) have been changed for the most part
~Nearly all enemies have 2 turns (excluding the Rat, Serpent, Felix, Jenna, and Sheba) (Refer to  Plot Twist! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxKv4ItDfio) for Felix, Jenna, and Sheba)
~Cost of Psynergy is increased
~Nearly all of the enemies can use psynergy alongside their original moves
~Some classes (like the Mariner class series for example) can use unleashes and/or enemy-only moves
~EXP Level Requirements have been increased
~Different base classes
~To use the old base classes, Felix needs Jupiter Djinni, Jenna needs Mercury Djinni, Sheba needs Venus Djinni, and Piers needs Mars Djinni
~Serpent has a different palette swap for each light that is activated
~Avimander has been replaced with Felix, Jenna and Sheba (Refer to  Plot Twist! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxKv4ItDfio))(He's also probably going to appear later in the Mars Lighthouse or Magma Rock)
~All utility psynergy (except the ones used in battle) costs 4 PP including Retreat
~Unused enemies and enemies from Golden Sun makes appearances (even Saturos and Mendari, even though their appearance contradicts the storyline)
~The single elemental summons now uses secondary effects (i.e Inflicts Delusion, May Inflict Stun, etc.)
~New Psynergy Formula
~You can determine the strength of a Psynergy by it's PP (Excluding the Psynergies after #207. in the ability editor)
~Very few Psynergies has secondary effects now (You'll have to discover them on your own ;) )
~Tamer class series is modeled after Jamie's. All credit goes to him
~1/3 of the patch has gone through the changes in the overhaul

List of unused/returning enemies
-----------------------------------------------------------
~62. Ruffian 3 (Dark Felix)
~74. Champa 2 (You fight him with Briggs and that enemy group might make you want to punch your computer screen ._.)
~75. Champa 3 (Commando)
~117. Baboon Goblin
~154. Elder Wood
~157. Dark Wizard (He's in the videos Golden Sun TLA: Difficulty Patch Battle  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMz0oDEUa98) and Golden Sun TLA: Getting My Revenge  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAHBKVGkHPQ&feature=related)
~216. Vermin (He's actually at the very beginning of Golden Sun)
~217. Vermin (#2)
~223. Wild Mushroom
~224. Wild Mushroom (#2)
~226. Slime
~227. Slime (#2)
~237. Bandit (The one from Golden Sun is now Dark Jenna)
~238. Thief (The one from Golden Sun is now Dark Sheba)
~239. Brigand (The one from Golden Sun is now Dark Piers, who hasn't made his appearance yet)
~273. Siren (Watch out for this one, she's vicious o_o)
~334. Mystery Man (You fight him with Flower and he might make you cry)
~347. Mystery Woman (You fight her with Blitz. Alone, she's not a problem, with Blitz, however, it's a whole different ball game)

I have some more unused enemies that I plan to use (but I'm not going to spoil the surprise ;D.) Also, the returning, exclusive GS1 enemies will be stronger, excluding Mystery Woman who is actually a lot weaker due to an earlier appearance as opposed to Mystery Man (who gave me the hardest time for awhile until I came back after gaining 2-3 levels o.O)

Single Elemental Summons
--------------------------------------------------
:VenusDjinni:  - May multiply damage by 1, 2, or 3
Ramses - May multiply damage by 1, 2, or 3
Cybele - May ignore 50% of defense
Judgement - May ignore 50% of defense
:MercuryDjinni:   - Inflict delusion
Nereid - Inflict delusion
Neptune - Halve Agility
Boreas - Halve Agility
:MarsDjinni:    - May inflict stun
Kirin - May inflict stun
Tiamat - Ignore defense
Meteor - Ignore defense
:JupiterDjinni:    - May inflict seal
Atalanta - May inflict seal
Procne - Drop resistance by 20
Thor - Drop resistance by 20

Known Glitches
---------------------------
~When you get to the djinn tutorial, the game will freeze if you have the Long Sword equipped since it will try to unleash Echo 2 times
~When you fight the 3rd Ruffian group in the beginning of the game, there's a possibility that Ruffian 3 (A.K.A. Purple Felix, who is a later boss) might appear for unknown reasons o.O
~Healing Psynergies/Djinni with a range of 3+ may might not heal/defend (if you're using granite, shade, flash, flower, etc.) due to a glitch in the editor

~Once you get past Kibombo, for an easier time, I recommend doing the following in this order: Aqua Rock -> Gaia Rock -> Sea of Time Islet (Optional) -> Tundaria Tower -> Ankohl Ruins. However, if you want a harder challenge, then you should do the ones you can in reverse order (which I don't recommend doing)

That's about it until I remember something else. Enjoy please and some feedback would be nice.

Weapon & Armors Uses
------------------------------------------
Here's what each weapon and armor (the category atleast) generally does when used in battle. NOTE: Not all of them does the same thing in battle

All Weapons - Varies
Armor - Guard Aura
Clothing (Shirts, Coats, and Vests) - Guard
Robes - Guardian
Shields - Protect
Gloves - Demon Spear
Armlets - Ward
Helms - Protector
Caps (Caps, Crowns, Hoods, and Hats) - Resist
Circlet - Bind

Weapon & Armors Abilities
------------------------------------------------
Here's a general rundown of weapons and armors (general categories) abilities (i.e Max HP, PP Recovery, etc.)

Long Swords - Boosts Encounters (most weapons has this ability)
Light Blades - Boosts Encounters and for some, Agility Gain
Axes - Boosts Encounters and Agility Loss (but great Atk and Def stats to make up for it)
Maces - Varies
Staffs (Staffs, Rods, Wands, and Ankhs) - Varies
Armor - Good Defense and Agility Loss
Clothing (Shirts, Coats, and Vests) - Agility gain, mediocre defense, and attack (usually less then half of the defense stat)
Robes - Luck boost and average defense
Shields - Agility loss, mediocre attack, and average defense
Gloves - Max PP increase, Great Attack (for armor =D) and below average defense (usually half of the attack stat. even with high attack, it's hard to get go defense with this method)
Armlets - Nothing as a whole surprisingly o.O. Thinking about adding increase criticals or counterstrike rate
Helms - Max HP increase, mediocre-average attack strength (usually half of the defense stats) and great defense
Caps (Caps, Crowns, Hoods, and Hats) - Nothing surprisingly o.O (although separately, some do have abilities). Thinking about adding increase criticals or counterstrike rate
Circlet - PP Recovery gain, horrid attack stat (usually 1/3 of the defense stat), and average defense

Lemurian Weapons!
----------------------------------
Here is a rundown of items for the Lemurian Spring and some equipment suggestions purely from the spring. NOTE: I'm going to post SOME of the statistics, not all. Also, seeing how this is a lucky well, some of these items will increase criticals (which compensates for some of the difficulty in this patch). The list is as followed:

Selling Prices!
-------------------------
Center Circle
-------------
Summon: Eclipse
Aegis Shield - 17450
Erebus Armor - 18000
Hestia Blade - 23000

1st Circle
----------
Aegis Shield - 17450
Floral Dress - 18000
Mighty Axe - 22250
Minerva Helm - 19750

2nd Circle
----------
Erebus Armor - 18000
Fireman's Pole - 18500
Floral Dress - 18000
Leda's Bracelet - 18250
Mighty Axe - 22250
Crown of Glory - 19750

3rd Circle
----------
Brilliant Circlet - 20500
Crafted Gloves - 19000
Hestia Blade - 23000
Leda's Bracelet - 18250
Wild Coat - 19500

Outer Circle
------------
Minerva Helm - 19750
Wild Coat - 19500
Water of Life - 3000

Outside
-------
Brilliant Circlet - 20500
Potion - 1000
Psy Crystal - 1500
Water of Life - 3000

Please remember that you have to WIN these before they can be sold (and actually, this is how much they cost after they're sold)

Stats!
----------
Aegis Shield

Attack/Defense - 25/48
Use - Protect

Erebus Armor

Attack/Defense - 24/52
Use - Guard Aura

Hestia Blade

Attack/Defense - 165/126
Use - Pyroclasm

Floral Dress

Attack/Defense - 24/44
Use - Sleep

Mighty Axe

Attack/Defense - 163/122
Use - Epicenter

Minerva Helm

Attack/Defense - 26/52
Use - Protector

Fireman's Pole

Attack/Defense - 138/84
Use - Resist

Leda's Bracelet

Attack/Defense - 27/51
Use - Reflect (Very useful)

Crown of Glory

Attack/Defense - 23/50
Use - Psy Boost

Brilliant Circlet

Attack/Defense - 17/51
Use - Bind

Crafted Gloves

Attack/Defense - 54/27
Use - Demon Spear

Wild Coat

Attack/Defense - 26/48
Use - Guard

Weapons!
------------------
Personally I would go with the Hestia Blade since it raises Mars Power and Max HP by 50 each (plus it has good Atk/Def). When used in battle, it uses Pyroclasm on the enemies. Another reason I would choose this is because of it doesn't lower your stats (unless you had a weapon that increased agility, but there's only like 2-3 that does that), compared to the Mighty Axe (which lowers stats). Equip able only by the guys (excluding Ivan).

Armors!
--------------
The only armor you receive from the well is the Erebus Armor (still awesome though =D). Like the other Armors, it uses Guard Aura and has HP Recovery (50)

Clothing

Both the Floral Dress and the Wild Coat are great choices, but seeing how only the ladies can equip the Floral Dress, it would be best to give the Wild Coat to a guy. Floral Dress puts enemies to sleep and raises criticals (10), while the Wild Coat raises Agility (50) and bestows the GS1 utility psynergy Cloak, which can be used in battle for 60 PP (PP cost is not definite as of yet)

Shields

The only shield you get from the well is the Aegis Shield, which uses Protect like the other shields and increases criticals (10)

Gloves

The only pair of gloves you get from the well are the Crafted Gloves, which uses Demon Spear and raises Max PP (60) like the other Gloves. I feel like I could do more with this, but for now, I'll leave it as is.

Armlets

The only armlet you get from the well is Leda's Bracelet, which raises your Jupiter Power (40) and uses the beta move (which can be used in battle =D) Reflect. Reflect decreases damage by 60% to 3 allies (which is kinda broken, but if the bracelet breaks you'd have to pay quite a chunk of money to fix it ._.). I know this Armlet will be abused to hell, but it'll be fun fixing it over and over again (assuming that it'll break after 2-3 uses)

Helms

The only helm you get from the well is the Minevra Helm, which raises you Max HP (65), Max PP (50), and casts Protector (like the other Helms). A great choice since it has nice abilities and stats (26 Atk/52 Def =D)

Caps

The only cap you get from the well is the Crown of Glory, which has HP Recovery (50), PP Recovery (30), and uses Psy Boost (which in raises your PP by 50, but can only be used on the user). If you like to use psynergy or have terrible keeping your HP up, then this would be a great choice for you (and the stats aren't half bad either 23 Atk/50 Def)

Circlets

The only circlet you get from the well is the Brilliant Circlet, which (like the other circlets) gives you PP Recovery (30) and (unlike any other weapon/armor) raises your Luck (30). Now I realize that that's high, but I'm probably going to halve it or bring it down to 10. Still a nice accessory though

You are welcome, but we only said the compliments because you deserve them.

Also, you mentioning the Foral Dress and Wild Coat gives me a good idea... Perhaps I will make it so characters can cross-dress? Probably not, but you never know.

I was thinking of making it so Felix can wield Staves instead of Axes. In fact, you could check out my hack idea topic at the old GSHC for class ideas too.

Um, Jamie? You can hear typed words? Wow, that must be some talent (lol).

Anyway, it isn't a bad idea, but I was only using those clothing ideas as an example. I was suggesting that some types of clothing (like some of the armours, etc.) should be made to fit the female characters too, as well as some of the robes fitting warrior types.

Have a nice day.

I just started playing this and it is epicly ridculous how hard this is. It definately live to it's name of maniac mode. Great job Zach. Thanks for the good description also alot easier to reference than opening this up in editor mode and checking everything. I really like what you did with the short sword.

@Salanewt: When you said that, I thought you meant males wearing dresses (lol).
Anyway, yeah, some armours should work on certain females, for example Jenna. (It does show her wearing light plate armour in the official art, after all.) Also, certain warrior types should get Robes (in my hacking idea, that would end up being Felix.)

Now that I don't have anything in my way now, I will re-start working on this so expect an update on or by January 4, 2010. I go back to school that day and would like to have an update before I go back (once that happens, idk if I would be able to work on it as much =/)

I must disagree with warrior-types wearing robes.
Also, armors not working with 'females' is wrong.  Because they don't work with Ivan either.  Armor doesn't work with MAGES.  If Jenna were a warrior-build, she'd be able to wear it.

Basically:

Warrior/Fighter - Armor, Clothing
Spellsword/Mage - Clothing, Robes
Males Only - That one mask thingy...
Females Only - Dresses and that other mask thingy...

Those are the restrictions.  Females not being able to wear armor has nothing to do with them being female, it has to do with them being mages.  And yes, Jenna IS meant to be a mage-type, even if that's totally screwed up by the issues involving team-2's class system.  Look at her stats - they reflect a mage/spellsword's stats more so than a warrior/fighter

Also, the only remaining combo for equipment - Armor/Robes - isn't taken up by any known build.  If you can come up with a build that can utilize such a combination, and give a REALLY good reason as to why, then I'm all ears.

Oh, seriously?  Nice.  I was always irked that there were female only, but no male only equips.  I mean, come on... some things just aren't made for women, while at the same time we have VALKYRIE armor, wieldable to any fighter, despite the only fighters being male.  I mean, Valkyries were warrior MAIDENS.  Meaning that armor is probably made for women.

Think about it.  That means that you've got Isaac going around wearing armor shaped to compensate for boobs...

Due to me changing the psynergy formula for your basic psynergies (formula was needed since I didn't have any ideas on how to go about power and PP), I had to do an (soon to be complete) overhaul of this patch, so I'm going to postpone this update to sometime between Friday and Sunday (luckily I don't have practice this week and I have 5 extra hours of free time (-1 for homework and chores) ). If I released it today, you would have 5 revised classes (the only ones that could actually win in some battles early on), the remaining (edited) classes would be lob-sided, and you would've face mostly impossible battles (including the scripted battles (script #3 WAS impossible)

The patch has been updated (Version 1.1)

Changes
--------

~Jamie's version of the Tamer class has been implemented. All credit goes to him (however I did make a few some tweaks to adjust to the hack's difficulty)

~New psynergy formula (which is what delayed this process <.<)
~Harder enemies due to the adding of the psynergy formula
~Very few psynergies now have secondary effects
~Lot of class tweaks done (only ones needs to be done are Flame User, Mariner, and Tamer)
~More unused enemies added

If you have any problems let me know
Title: Re: Golden Sun TLA Maniac Mode Patch

The patch has been updated (Version 1.2)

Changes
--------
~All enemies (up to Briggs) have been revised (due to the addition of the psynergy formula forcing me to do so <.<). Because of that, the beginning up to Briggs is now playable and is no longer impossible

~The fight with Briggs will be a great challenge and some level grinding may be neccessary. It's also normal if you feel the urge to punch your computer screen or pull your hair out because of him :D. Also, I recommend this setup:
Felix (Defender) -> Fog, Sour
Jenna (Tamer) -> Cannon, Breath (set), Blitz (set)
Sheba (Magician) -> Echo (set), Iron

Summon Atalanta (might inflict Seal), use Iron, summon Ramses (might do damage multiplied by 1, 2, or 3), ~filler. Keep a healthy supply of Antidotes and Elixirs. Make sure you also have some Water of Life (it can be done without it, but it's nice to have "insurance")

Briggs and henchmen poses a challenge because they can AND will lower your Attack & Defense, halve your agility, inflict sleep & poison, and may cause double-triple damage with certain moves O_O. Enjoy ^-^

~More unused/GS1 enemies have been added
~Classes received another boost

That's about all I can remember atm. If I remember anything else I will post it. Enjoy ^-^

EDIT: It seems like I'm out of ideas for classes. Classes that I need to change are all Tri-Elemental class series, Hermit class series, and all item required class series (excluding the Tamer class series). It would be nice if anyone would like to contribute some ideas. Please and thank you :D

yes you should, but word of warning: after the fight with Briggs the difficulty shifts. This is due to the fact that I'm re-balancing the patch (had to take a little difficulty off due to TOO many complaints about the difficulty <.<). Make sure you follow the tips on the front page.

With the release of Editor Version 0.3, there's a strong possibility that I'll start a new hack altogether. However, I'm still tempted to continue working on this patch (and lessen the difficulty :D) and probably make some changes. I'm only doing it if you guys want me to

I would like to see you work more on it, if you feel like it. However, I would only focus on the hack that you want to do the most. Oh, and now that the new class separating patch is available, there are even more possibilities (provided that you are ready to duplicate almost all of the other classes).

Have a nice day.

That's the thing, IDK where to go with this. Luckily for me, I wrote down just about ALL the changes I made, BUT I don't really have any ideas on how to go about this <.<. I probably will continue this (especially since I can't think of anything for a brand New hack besides making a story around Karst and Agatio + Alex, but even still I would screw that story up <.< lol)

Ah, I see. Of course, how many other games do you like? You might be able to make a hack with some of those characters if you really wanted a new hack. Of course, a difficulty hack would be nice to start with, and then you can use that for balancing your hack.

Have a nice day.

Alot :D But, I don't know the 1st thing when it comes to sprites :/

Depending on the type of sprites needed (and how many), I could make a few if you want. Of course, I tend to take my time with sprites, so it depends on how quickly you need them.

Have a nice day.

Update: After thinking about this for awhile, I've decided to resume work on this, BUT I'm going to have to edit from the beginning of the game since I have to edit all of the opponent's Defense stat

EDIT: Next update will come.......either at the King Scorpion or afterwards when you fight Briggs (probably at Briggs). IDK when this'll happen, but it will

I think you posted the wrong patch >< nothing changed when i applied it ... Ruffians at the beginning of the game didn't have 2 turns and can be beaten with 1 fume spell.

O_o merely looked at the notes for like 5 minutes [skimming] and I saw how much work went into this. Going to be amazing to play, if I can ever get VBA to play it right. For some reason even after patching it still only plays the normal TLA :um: :um: :um:

It isn't in the downloads section...
The hack maker doesn't seem to be very active here, but try sending him a PM about it.

That's because I never submitted it to the downloads section. I want it to be complete or halfway complete when I do. Sorry about my inactivity, hacking and forums become very boring after awhile smh

Reuploading would be very nice, indeed.

I have a Question, I just finished GS1 and (to be perfectly honest I didnt think you would go online soon), so I just wrote my Goldpassword in a normal GS2 Rom (since Emulator didn't want to link my data) with a Savestat which includes "Clear Data"...

So, can I use this Savestat? -> I'm currently at the Screen where I'm choosing the difficulty (Hard/Easy/Normal) -> with your hack I should choose Normal, right?

So, well, thanks for uploading  =)

edit:
It'd be also nice if you give more precise information about the class changes :)

(I was quite fond of  at least two Healers... Had Isaac Dragoon (One Djinn used made him learn revive and singleheal instead of teamheal), Ivan White Mage(Teamheal), Garet Samurai and Mia Ranger :) )

UPDATE:  Maniac Mode Patch 1.2  (http://www.sendspace.com/file/lipn29)

CHANGES
~The party is back to their original base classes
~Several classes have new names (including all base classes)
~New psnergyies

NOTE: Due to my decision to revert back to the old base classes, the difficulty in the beginning of the game has been lowered due to the fact that they all have psynergy with a range of 3 or greater, however; JENNA IS STILL REQUIRED TO USE OIL DROPS TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE 1ST 4 BATTLES. Enjoy ppls

Seems to work great...
In battles I have sometimes the glitch that the "Red Pointer" which is usually spinning before the Text in the black area under the Battlescreen is jumped upwards -> left of my 3 comrades Stats on top of the screen and I cant read the following text since it wont be shown :(... just klicking through

However, if the battle drags on after a few messages it fixes itself

Don't use the same animation on more than one Psynergy, dude! Also, I know a way to make the Searing Fire series a distance attack, since it doesn't appear to actually be an EPA. You overwrote Unleashes with that series, didn't you? Well, don't. Instead, overwrite blank spell slots.

I'm aware. I was disappointed when I saw that there were only 1 animation for Fire V2 series, Mind series, and Strike series but since I liked them so much, I thought it wouldn't really matter if they were the same.

Actually, I didn't; I looked up the desired unleash, got the animation number for it, and put it in the blank spell slots between venus and mercury and between I think Mars and Jupiter

Odd. Normally when I do that, for most moves it results in it being a distance attack. I know for certain that it works with Crucible Fire, Cyclone Slash, Bad Omen, Sarcophagus, the Glower Staff unleash (whose name I forget), Terra Strike, and probably a number of others.

You can actually change what type of attack every psynergy should be - close range, long range, and more - although it requires using a hex editor. Every psynergy in the game is assigned a single byte that determines what type of attack it is. More info in this (http://forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php?topic=1416.0) topic. Results may vary with different animations, so it might be a good idea to experiment.

Of course, Jamie's way of overwriting an existing psynergy that uses the type you want saves some time. Most unused slots probably use 00, which is standard ranged psynergy, but it could vary depending on where they are in the list.

Bad news, my laptop (which had my hack up there) got the dreaded blue screen of death so now I have to send it in so it can be restored to factory default settings. So I'm pretty much losing my hack (again smh). If anyone has downloaded the most recent patch, could they please reupload the zip folder and patch and send it to me? Thanks in advance

Sorry Zach, but I can't find it on my computer right now. There could be a small chance that I have deleted it to clear up some computer space.

Role: Perhaps, but that would only work if his other computers have any copies. I took a look at the latest url that he posted, and it would seem that the download isn't there anymore.

I don't think I have it either, and I kind of doubt that I downloaded it in the first place? (Not sure... but if I ever did (for an older version), I probably lost it... As we have had computer problems in the past as well where we had to restore everything.) I actually wanted to wait for Map Editing before I test too many patches. Anyway, good luck on finding someone who may have a patch for you.
