Project List / Re: Golden Sun 1: Jenna Edition
17, May, 2023, 02:54:44 PM
I love it~ :heart:  This is definitely something I want to use next time I play. That being said, I have a couple of thoughts:

 :JupiterStar: I notice this patch doubles the game's size. And while an extra 8 MB isn't the end of the world, it did give me pause as I wasn't sure why/if it would actually need extra space. =o

 :JupiterStar: My brief test to make sure the game was working after patching it revealed that Jenna still uses Garet's deep, masculine vocal sound effects whenever she's talking. It ... paints a funny but undesirable mental image of what she sounds like. ||D

 :JupiterStar: My deepest regret, perhaps, is that I will have to choose between this hack and Reloaded or your Dawn of Djinn hack. Given that I will probably choose this hack in the end, I would've loved to combine it with one of the two if they were compatible.

I briefly tried applying both patches to a single game, knowing full well it probably wouldn't work but y'know--I was curious. Sometimes with other games it has worked in the past, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to experiment a little. With reloaded, applying Reloaded first and then Jenna resulted in the game failing to boot. I then applied Jenna first and then Reloaded and that got the game to run, but it looked like Jenna's animations were partially corrupted. For Dawn of Djinn I patched it with Jenna first and then Dawn of Djinn. This caused the game to play in (mostly) silent movie mode with no dialogue appearing during the intro cutscene, and Jenna's sprites were also completely corrupted. Patching with Dawn of Djinn first and Jenna second fixed Jenna's sprite corruption, however dialogue still did not play during the intro. So close! (Except probably not. 'Cause y'know--that was just the intro custcene)

...Geez. I'm like, breathing life into this entire section of the forum. Whoo xD

Anyway. I released a new arrangement. This time it's not 8bit. Yeah! >=o

This time around I arranged the Rival Battle music from Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald with Tohou instruments.
I wasn't a huge fan of the original, but I really like what I came up with, somehow. Others seem to like it as well. That being said, I hope you guys like it. c:

I released a new arrangement. It's an 8 bit one and I deliberately tried to restrict myself to some of my older more NES orientated tools. It's the HG/SS version of Lance's battle theme, by the way. I'm interested what you might think of it, Charon. There isn't any DPCM, and instrument variety was reduced to nearly the bare minimum. (Square, Square Wave 12%-50%, Triangle, Triangle Wave, Sine Wave, Saw Wave, Noise, Gameboy Drums), though I didn't use Sine or Saw wave at any point or time during this particular mix.No reverb or chorus were used either. I also did quite a bit of surgical alterations to the song itself to get it to work more cleanly.

Here's the Newgrounds link, though the Youtube and direct download are on the main list.

Yeah, I know what you mean about "purists", but they're kind of dead wrong about what makes a song 8-bit, so I'm not concerned about them. D;

I tend to prefer to push the limits of an 8-bit song rather than try to make them NES-like. Though, I could see what you're getting at with reverb and chorus. Also, on an off note, the NES actually has channels dedicated to specific instruments. I can't seem to remember which ones off the top of my head, but I know they do. What I do know is that it has one Triangle Channel, one Noise Channel, and one DPCM channel. I just can't remember where the squares and pulses fit into that.

Yeah. Bass was always a problem with Spyro songs for me. For a while I couldn't even do those songs because they sounded so god awful with my limited tools. (And I refused to release them in that state) I don't think the bass in that song is actually DPCM based, but it's so heavy that it probably has it's on share of issues. |D (Yeah, I went back and checked their project files. I didn't even have the ability to use DPCM bass back then)

Hmm... I guess I did deliberately screw with the howling to make it louder and more authentic. |D Did I put that on a sweep switch? Oh my, yes I did. So it's just how loud it is that's the problem? Not the pitch bending in and of itself? That's good, I always got nervous when using sweeps. Namely because they're a rather obsolete pitch bending technology that doesn't easily fit in newer songs.

The computer I did a lot of my arrangements on has an issue where the volume on it isn't quite as loud as most computers, so a lot of my arrangements are a bit too loud in general. D;

Also, on another note, I finally put up an arrangement of a Golden Sun tune. It's Sol Sanctum arranged using Pokemon R/S/E instruments! http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/431333

Quote from: Charon the Ferryman on 01, July, 2011, 09:25:46 PMSomething felt really non-8 bit with the Cynthia remix (namely the bass line). Are you using an 8-Bit remixer or just a general mixing program, because it really sounds like you're using the latter. Also, the part from about 1:00 to 1:12 is off tune.

General arrangement program. There aren't really 8-bit specific programs out there that I know of. The bass in that song is also DPCM based. That being said, it's "higher quality" than any regular 8 bit instruments but is certainly well within the limitations...

Yeah... no need to bump threads here.  We're not Gaia.  If it's been over a week and you have stuff to add, go ahead and add it.

My qualm being that editing posts doesn't do, like, anything in terms of letting people know I've put something new up.  :sad:

Am I just supposed to not?

Bumping. I've put up two new pieces since last time. Von Bolt's theme from Advance Wars arranged with Tohou instruments, and Grabbag from Duke Nukem 3D arranged with FM Synth instruments. (Reminds me of how Grabbag sounds coming out of a Soundblaster)

I've always stood against sites like Facebook which infringe on what I believe should be basic rights of the internet. I always will. Their ridiculous, unfair, and horribly impractical name policy is just the tip of the ice berg demonstrating their sick ideological nonsense to try and /force/ us to behave through implied threats of real life implications. :fury:

In my honest opinion... the internet, with it's safety in anonymity, has proven that many people are willing to be good people without being forced. Therefore, I can not support this terrible, terrible movement Facebook has going on.

Facebook. It can kiss my butt.

I'm almost as eager to get ahold of these instruments as I am for the work being done at making it possible to extract instruments from Pokemon Stadium. c:

I'd like to throw it out there that most programs that use sound samples allow advanced looping options that are simply impossible with raw samples. D= If that's what you're still having trouble with.

Otherwise, let me know if there's anything I can do to help. -w-

EDIT: Heck, if you sent me a sample and tell me what's wrong with the loop I could see what can be done to fix it. Preferably in a nice raw .wav format. (Though I could always go through the trouble of converting them.)

My favorite character from Dark Dawn is Karis. Probably hands down. Not sure about all of Golden Sunl, but Dark Dawn specifically? Definitely Karis.

I like the way she looks, her personality, the fact that she's a jupiter adept (Represented by my favorite color, purple!)

IMHO Straight until there's remote suggestion otherwise. He's just somewhat androgynous, like every other wind adept up until Dark Dawn.

I-- :Sweat: ...oh god shipping debates! *Flees*

I'm bumping my thread because I've added a new arrangement to my list. (It's okay if I just put the new arrangements in my first post as an edit right? It's just so much neater than putting them in their own posts.)

The newest Arrangement is Cynthia's Battle theme from Pokemon D/P/P and B/W in 8 bit. I really dished out a lot of different tools making it, so I'm proud.

I find those edges to be stupid no matter who is getting screwed by them. I'd rather get KOs myself, rather than rely on some stupid stage gimp >.>;
#16
I have a death grudge against FD. No dynamic elements whatsoever, badly designed edges that screw with some characters' third jump occasionally, and 70% of the Brawl community doesn't know how to play on any other stage. >_<; That's why I ended the match right at the beginning that one time we got on FD. I think I was Marth and god knows Marth is one of those characters prone to getting screwed by the edges.
#17
I don't really care for smash balls anyway. Didn't realize they were apparently on when I was playing.

Of course, I hate stages with no dynamic elements, like Final Destination and Battlefield. :sad:

They never punish people who just tunnel vision and get locked into their best static strategy. That and Final Destination is so overused that everyone is /used/ to that stage and plays better due to comfort.
#18
To be fair, Meta Knight's Final Smash just sucks really badly.Yoshi's final smash is a thousand times better. Meta Knight's can't even KO a foe if they don't have significant damage (Or aren't increda-light)

Meanwhile Yoshi's is practically a garauntee'd KO assuming the user is competent.

I'm pretty tough, huh?~ :heart:
You had a surprisingly good DK. c:

Edit: Er.. maybe next time. I've unplugged my Wii and settled into bed and something tells me you're getting kind of frustrated. I think it's time for a break man.
