News & Announcements / WAR AGAINST TEMPLE OF KRADEN
01, April, 2012, 05:49:07 PM
Previously, our companions at none other than the Temple of Kraden were a peaceful, loving people. However, they have transformed themselves into a vengeful, horrible entity!

This monster MUST be stopped before they can kill us and take over our land as well! Peoples of GSHC, we all know you've had our differences BUT WE MUST REACT TO DEFEAT THIS TREACHEROUS NEW FOE.

However, people cannot simply believe in a naive manner that everyone here is genuine. I have found none other than our own severousSnivy acting as a mole for the plague! I declare him UNFIT FOR THE COMMUNITY.

LONG LIVE THE COMMUNITY!

I actually haven't seen a group list for this, only the 3DS Mii list, which can be found here. The Mii's have also been copied to this thread for easy access.

Basically list your connections online here! If you have a new connection that isn't on the list, list it anyways and I'll be happy to add it. If you need to edit any information, please list that as well.

If you guys want to have a gaming night, we can also post announcements here as well as temporarily on the ticker.

Feedback / New Shop Item Ideas
24, November, 2011, 09:44:53 PM
Got an idea for an item in the shop?

Post it here!

As for me, I've got a couple myself...

:Luna: Turnip
The turnip is an item whose buying and selling prices change randomly each day. By buying low and selling high, you can make a profit off of these things. Its price goes up and down 1-5 coins a day, having a minimum price of 1 coin. It has no other use.

:Luna: Post Background Changer
There are two versions of this - one that allows you to change the background colour of your posts, and a version that allows you to set a repeating background image. You can preview it before you set it. The first version will cost 5 coins, and the second version will cost 8. Its limited to one use. If your background image is an offensive, vulgar or hard to see background (flashing lights, black text-on-black background), it will be removed and you will not be refunded your coins.

I need to stop coming up with ideas for little games.

Version 1.2:
Download (Megaupload)

FROM THE README:

ENGIEBLOX VERSION 1.2

Gravelpit -
Level 1 complete
Level 2 complete

11/21/11

By Cat Atoms (Charon the Ferryman/Lucthewhinywindboy/crazybuizel/daigonite/cream gravy ect.)

Please excuse the splash screens, I'm using the free version of Gamemaker. If I get enough support on this I might go ahead and get the full version, but dunno lol

OBJECTIVE:
By moving your four objects, try to complete the puzzles and reach the goal. Try to haul as many of your items as possible to try to solve the next puzzle.

Objects include the Sentry gun, which can defeat enemies, the dispenser which can be used for getting to high places, and the teleporters that can help you return to certain areas.

CONTROLS
LEFT - move left
RIGHT - move right
UP - jump
C - pickup nearby building
SPACEBAR - place nearby building down
1 - destroy/rebuild sentry
2 - destroy/rebuild dispenser
3 - destroy/rebuild teleporter entrance
4 - destroy/rebuild teleporter exit
ENTER - turn on teleporter (only works while held down)

Notes
The sentry fires a bullet on its own about every second. If you lay a sentry down right in front of an enemy, a bullet will come out, killing it, or at least reducing its HP. Please note that it only faces right.

The Dispenser recovered your HP while standing on it.

The teleporter entrance, indicated by an arrow above it, teleports you to the exit. But be warned! If anything is on the exit the teleport will NOT function, so make sure any buildings are off of it when you want to use it!

You have to be standing next to a Dispenser or Sentry to pick it up, but on top of a teleporter part to pick it up.

Notice the little crows? If you touch them they fall to the ground and can be used as platforms.

If you see an eagle, make sure to hit it with a bullet from your sentry. It will rise off of the ground!

The Metal Tokens (which are spinning engineer symbol coins) grant you the ability to rebuild a building, no matter where it is! But be careful because these are in limited supply. Only use them when very necessary! The more you collect, the more you can build, but you'll need your gloves on as many as you can get.

CURRENT ENEMIES:
Scout - This annoying little guy runs back and forth quickly. One shot does him in.

Soldier (standing) - He shoots rockets at regular intervals. If he gets three shots he's done for!

Soldier (rocket-jumping) - he uses his rocket to propel himself in the air, then fires at the ground! Beware of his rain of rockets. He's defenseless on the ground while reloading.

Demoman - he fires bombs at you. If you touch the bombs, you take a lot of damage! They stick around until they go off.

Heavy Weapons Guy - He shoots a stream of bullets quickly. Make sure you have a sentry ready or he'll take you out!

Engineer - he has a sentry, just like you. Except his has a lot more firepower. Take down the sentry first, then go after the engineer before he builds another one!

Fixed Glitches:
- You can no longer use the teleport while carrying the exit. This prevents a crash.
- Made collisions a bit better...
- Fixed scout's running animation.

KNOWN GLITCHES
- ugly black lines on the ground...

Some planned future stages (not in actual order):
- Dustbowl
- Gorge
- Egypt
- Turbine
- Doublecross (??? Its been a while since I've played on this map, I'm 99% sure that's its name)
- Coldfront
- Yukon
- Mountain Lab
- Steel
- 2-Fort

... will add more later when I come up with more ideas...

Still rough around the edges but its gettin' somewhere...

This is a response to the Golden Sun MUGEN that they're making on GSR. The people working on it are pricks and I hate them so I made this out of a reaction when I told them that they weren't actually developing a game :p

It's meant as both a taunt and a joke. lulz

Super cool gameplay video
Riefwars - Golden Sun Fan Game
This is the best mother ### Golden Sun fan game ever made. I made it in less than 2 hours because I'm AWESOME.

RIEFWARS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is RIEFWARS?
It's the best mother ### Golden Sun fan game in existence. It's even better than Dark Dawn. I also made the engine in less than 2 hours. That means suck on it.

Story:

Two years have passed since the initial announcement of Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. Even though it was the worst entry in the series and was probably a cheap cop out on Camelot's part every stupid goddamn fanboy and fangirl wants to ### talk about it as if it gives them a hard on or something. Some even are as indignant enough to claim that they are more worthy of writing ### fangames than other people. That's ### right.

So Luc, the goddess of Whiny Wind Boys, summoned Rief to stop this madness. First, he would attack all those stupid goddamn mythical creatures in his way because they are lame. Then, he would attack all the goddamn ship pairings in ### existance because they piss off the great goddess. And finally, Rief would defeat all the popular Golden Sun characters because Sveta has no personality, Karst is lame fettish fuel, Mia only exists for her boobies, Matthew doesn't say anything and Karis won't shut the ### up.

Oh yeah. And Yoshie's in there too. Which makes it awesome.

Who's involved:

Luc the Whiny Wind Boy: The best motha ###' member on GSR, period. And she can make games better than you.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:How can I get involved in the project?

A: You don't. Especially you, Encablossa.

Q:What will the game play like?

A: It's a ### SHOOTER. What the hell is there not to understand?!

Q:Who'll be in the game?
A: The Silhouettes you see below represent the full character roster for the game, all of these characters are confirmed:

So far the Major Playable Characters will consist of:

 • Rief
 • ...maybe yoshie. maybe

Q:Why are there no Dark Dawn Characters

A:There are, you ### idiot. Who do you think Rief is? ARE YOU GOING TO QUESTION THE ALMIGHTY RIEF?

...Thought not.

How can you help?

Don't. Just let me do my job, jackass.

Anyways. Controls.
Version 1.1.0 and later:
SPACEBAR = MOVE UP. Works like swimming levels in SMB
LEFT CLICK = FIRE. You'll need to do this a lot (don't worry there's infinite ammo cuz I'm nice like that)
RIGHT CLICK = Lets you summon a legendary beast, depending on how many Mercury Djinn you collected! A summon destroys everything in its path, and the more djinn you have, the larger path that's destroyed.

(Version 1.0.1 and earlier)
SPACEBAR = MOVE UP. Works like swimming levels in SMB
ENTER = FIRE. You'll need to do this a lot (don't worry there's infinite ammo cuz I'm nice like that)
A = Lets you summon a legendary beast, depending on how many Mercury Djinn you collected! A summon destroys everything in its path, and the more djinn you have, the larger path that's destroyed.

Basically, kill all the monsters for points! If you get a Mercury Djinni, he'll recover all your HP, and you can use it later to summon a legendary beast! But you gotta touch him (inorite), you can't just shoot him.

This is just a beta which is pretty obvious after playing the game for 2 minutes.

I'll add more ### later but I'm too busy being awesome right now. Later, k?

Enemy List:
Phoenix - SHOOTS ### AT YOU ZOMG! Goes in predictable up and down pattern.

Green Lizard Thing - Is like Phoenix except does this weird @#$ zigzag thing.

Eagle - Goes back and forth. Projectiles shot out at 25 and -25 degree angles.

Wolf - Lunges at you and deals damage if it runs into you.

Yellow-Rumped Warbler - Runs its beak into you, draining your HP to 1. Better say your death wish.

Yellow-Throated Warbler - It looks quite a bit like those dreadful Yellow-Rumped Warblers, but it recovers your HP fully if you get hit by one! If you shoot it you also recover a little HP.

Fish - They flop around quickly, and shoot at you.

Shark - It lunges at you very quickly and deals heavy damage if hit. Usually haunts the bottom of the screen.

Rock n' Roll Chicken - These jerks float around for a bit and then attack at an angle. They also shoot a lot of bullets. They're unpredictable and dangerous!

Kid on Bike - This little kid doesn't do anything to attack, but if you shoot him you'll lose all your points!

Paper Doll - Appears in different locations. If you shoot it you'll get a new life!

Barabara - If you see her, you should get the hell away from her. She can't damage on her own, but what comes next...

Yoshie - CANT HANDLE THIS LEVEL OF JOLLY, JOY, KINDNESS AND HAPPINESS (i.e. instant KO)

Creepy Sign - Pops out from the top and bottom of the screen to attack. There's no way to kill it because of its position.

DOWNLOAD BETA NAO:
Version 1.1.0:

Click here to get to the shop!

TR badges will be available for their current prices until August 19, 2011.
SK badges will be available until August 26, 2011.
Then their stock will be reduced to 5 and they
will go for 4 coins a piece. So get them while they're hot!

A few questions...
What? Only 36 badges? I thought you'd make more!

This is a two part set. The first part, the TR badges, will cost 2 coins each. The second part, the SK badges, will cost 1 coin each. The main difference is that the TR badges are either main playable characters or characters with "true runes". The SK badges aren't done yet but when they are I'll put them up, as well as a badge list.

Tierkreis badges will also be included in the SK set.

Since the SK set is so large, it will be uploaded in 3 pieces, most likely on different days. As soon as a section is uploaded it will be available for sale.

Oh no! I think you're missing an important character! What should I do?

Please note that some characters may not have been included because either they have no artwork or their artwork was too difficult to make into a badge. This is why there is no Black Sword or Bright Shield badge.

If you can provide stock for a character that I did miss though, please notify me through PM, and I'll fix it.

Yo, Charon, this Suikoden Badge thing is great, and Imma let you finish, but I just wanted to say, that Rody was the best Suikoden character of all time. OF ALL TIME!!!

There's a reason why I'm not doing the more obscure characters... and its mainly because we would have about 700 or so badges if we did. If you like a really obscure character there's nothing stopping you from making a custom badge... just remember that the custom badges never change value and probably wouldn't have much use in trades.

Charon's Extra Instruments Patch is finally here!

Patch V.0.1

With this patch, you can add extra instruments to Golden Sun: The Lost Age for your music hacking. Here's a sample video of some of the different instruments:

The clickering noise is caused by the fact that I'm still working on the loops a bit.

List of instruments:
0 - Piano
4 - Electric Piano1
6 - Haspricord
9 - Glockenspiel
13 - Marimba
14 - Tubular Bell
15 - Duclimer
19 - Church Organ
21 - Accordion
25 - Steel Guitar
36 - Slap Bass (needs some work)
40 - Quick Violin
41 - Violin
42 - Violin
57 - Trombone
59 - Muted Trumpet (could use some work)
60 - French Horn

PLEASE NOTE: In this patch there are no noticeable differences WITHOUT hacking the music. If you use this patch, you can simply use these instruments in hacking. There are NO changes to gameplay/stats/music/ect. This patch should be applied to a blank Golden Sun: The Lost Age ROM.

The loops are still being worked on, so please excuse any weirdness to the loops.

Please let me know if you have any problems that pertain to the actual patch. If you have problems with general music hacking, please check out this topic.

QuoteShuckle can deal the most damage ever. Although the circumstances would be nearly impossible, using Rollout, a level 100 Shuckle can potentially deal the most damage in one single attack through the use of numerous stat boosters, by using Helping Hand, Metronome held item, Power Trick, a Skill Swap to Pure Power or Huge Power, and the Defense Curl/Rollout combo. Also, Shuckle's partner must have the ability Flower Gift and the weather must be sunny. On the 5th impact of Rollout, if used against a level 1 Ledyba or Yanma that have been hit with negative Defense modifiers (such as Screech), it can deal 213,896,052 damage with a critical hit.

So I've finally made the decision to import a used copy of Fire Emblem 12, mainly because I'm pretty sure its not going to see American shores for some time at least (plus its fun to have Japanese games!). Anyways, Amazon claims that the game is DSi enhanced, which leads me to think that its region-locked. Will it be region-locked for the DS/DS Lite? My friend really wants my DSi and I'm barely even using most of its features anyhow...

Now I'm getting paranoid that the seller might not be "genuine". Their used copy is about $10 cheaper, and they don't have any reviews on Amazon. They seem to have positive reception on Ebay though... should I go through with it or wait a week and go with the more expensive store?

Creative Works / Game Maker - Sasaki's Adventure
03, April, 2011, 03:00:53 PM
So I started to mess around with Game Maker today... I made a very basic demo. If anyone wants to help I'll post the uncompiled files.

The basic idea I have here is just a regular platformer in most respects. You can't hop on enemies but you can collect needles and throw them at enemies. There will be different kind of needles that can throw in different ways, like one that can hone in on enemies or ones that explode once hitting an enemy. You can switch needles if you need to, and it will have a counter for each. In addition, by collecting 5 sheets of fabric in each level you can obtain a different "costume", depending on the key pressed, which can help you reach inaccessible areas. I'm not sure if I want to be necessary to complete the level. The current planned costumes are Suit (lets you go past certain enemies without notice), Snow Gear (makes it possible for her to pass through supercold areas), Water Gear (lets her swim), Yukata (lets her glide). More will be planned. There will probably be 3 hit points...

Also, there will be different monster types of course. Some monsters that can only hurt you from the bottom, some monsters that can only be killed with a certain needle... ect.

I'll make an ingame tutorial probably too.

A few other ideas being thrown around:
- Using car hoods as a spring-device
- Having a bicycle to cruise through certain areas of levels, but when finished, launched off bike, and without jumping at least once you take damage.
- Having additional stages where you play as other characters, or having one of the characters follow you
- Cold Stages - Run between areas of warmth with a "cold meter", if filled, causes 1 hit point of damage.

CURRENT IDEAS:

Needle types:

-Neutral. Just shoots forward. Obtain 2 in a stack.
-Double Side Needle. Shoots both directions. Obtain 2 in a stack.
-Angle Needle. Shoots 5 needles at 45, 22, 0, -22, and 45 degree angles. 5 in a stack.
-Flame Needle. Shoots one needle, explodes on enemy. Hurts Yoshi she's hit by the blast. 1 in a stack.
-Paralyze Needle. Shoots one needle. Stuns enemy for 5 seconds. 1 in a stack.
-Firm Needle. Kills enemies, and passes through them until hits wall. Can be used as a platform. 1 in a stack.
-Homing Needle. Pursues a foe until it is hit. 1 in a stack.
-Sewing Needle. Needed for creating outfits. One per level, lost when outfit is created.

Outfit types:
-Normal. Yoshi in her yellow t-shirt and blue jeans. No effect.
-Suit. Yoshi can get past enemies in dark areas.
-Cold Outfit. Yoshi can go in cold areas without getting hurt.
-Swim Outfit. Yoshi can swim in water without getting hurt. She cannot attack underwater.
-Yukata. Yoshi can use sleeve flaps to glide, thus reducing gravity.
-Float Outfit. Yoshi floats upward, and using the up arrow (jump button) pushes her down. No limit to pushing down, unlike jumps.
-Dinosaur Outfit. Scares enemies away.

Locations:
- Yellow City. A city on the coast, with a lot of mountains ect. Named after the bright sunlight. Yellow City -> Fast Trains! -> Snap Capitol

So I'm going to post my Misc. midi songs here so people can listen to them.

This song is a remix of the Sky Tower theme from the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. What do you guys think?

News & Announcements / April Fools!
02, April, 2011, 08:44:17 PM

Happy April Fools!

That's right! Anything that happened yesterday was obviously April Fools... but today was an extension of that joke! I never really did "destroy" the forums, or "hack" into the server... that never really happened. I sure put up a convincing show, didn't I!

Special thanks goes to Atrius and Overlord Kain for working with me to make such a hilarious April Fools joke! Especially Atrius, for working with me to create such a convincing "late" April Fools joke!

You maybe were too surprised to notice, but when I supposedly "hacked into the forum" and "destroyed the website", I was really giving all "banned" members 5 coins for participating, as well as any member that changed their avatar to a Slowpoke-related thing 3 coins.

And if you still think that we were serious, just ask Atrius. We worked on this while we went along, and I used the account "goldensunmaster97" to communicate with him while my other account was "perma-banned". I was laughing so hard my cheeks started to hurt after a while!

I guess I really do live up to my name, hmm? Long live the balance between Luna and Sol!

News & Announcements / NewTheme
01, April, 2011, 05:21:35 PM
I almost forgot.

I was very sorry, I'm an April Fool's theme, it was confirmed that up as soon as possible! But I do have a lot of things forgotten, that I would be stupid. I understand. But today I feel light headed bit, I know you.

I hope to be like this new theme. This is the best theme. Actually I was thinking that the more force it April Fool's site. Because I'm forced to use it for probably another year, they seem like a lot of people like this theme. This is a lovely pink and rose color theme like this, you agree?

Perhaps what I learned to take something bigger than something quick and fast. This theme is a little slow to take the lives of so that you can stare blankly into space as the neuropathy and someone reminds me sometimes. We probably still, in terms of wits than anyone, including me, because I can learn to respect what you're mighty blessed Slowpoke, to stay for the spread of goodwill is forced to this theme.

Tomorrow, at the latest I think there is a place that respects they who forced all the members have a Slowpoke in your avatar in order to remember those that we verify that they The. Whether intellectual disability, who feel we can put all the special hats that disadvantaged our special education. Tomorrow I will be forced from this avatar profile Atrius all works. It is great respect for what can not think straight without being distracted by one squirrel.

Avatar:

If you do not use this avatar is banned from the site!

Slowpoke ... Now, Forever!

NOTE:

Overlord Kain, His signature, in order to delay the fun, is prohibited. Actually, It will be modified to join the revolution for was just retarded.

Stupid people in my signature that everyone needs to put some way make you feel good. Are you an idiot to those "stupid people" because that means you can not call. What you have said you were their helmets, you have to say look great and taste like how on the head.

This is not just April Fools. It is about people with brain, be cool, fun to have given another opportunity to stupid people. Stupid people of these require someone to be friends!

News & Announcements / Forum Shop (Beta) is Up!
22, February, 2011, 01:35:50 PM
Something I bet a lot of users were looking forward to!

Woohoo! Shop! Wait... where is it?!
The shop is located right next to "My Messages" and "Calendar" on the top of the page.

What can I do in the Shop?
A lot more than you'd think!

I'll go over each of the links one-by-one.

Shop Home
This just shows general statistics about the shop, as well as the Shop menu.

Buy Stuff
Woot! You can buy stuff by selecting this!

The stuff is organized by type. For example, Standard Badges are under "Standard Badges". Select that to see the Standard Badge collection. While searching for a badge to purchase, you can also organize the badges in certain ways, such as by name. Click "Buy Now!" to purchase the item. Please note that the shop will NOT ask you if you are sure, so keep this in mind. Now this item is in your inventory, which you can check on the next link. When you purchase a badge, it will automatically appear in your profile. Please note that a few badges cannot be purchased.

Your Inventory
This is the collection of things you have purchased. With an item, you can either

A. Use it. This will apply an items effect. Some items disappear after using them. Using a badge will make it appear as your "favourite badge" that appears right next to your posts.
B. Trade it. This may sometimes not be selectable.
C. Sell it. This sells that item back to the shop, redeeming your coins. This may sometimes not be selectable.

At this point, all items can be sold, but that may change. If an item can't be sold, it also can't be traded.

Send Money to Someone
This allows you to send money to another user for whatever reason. This way, you do not have to increase coins for someone doing you a favour, and the "Work Requests" can be handled in private (of course, you should certainly still increase another user's money if you like their posts!). You can also send them a message.

Send an Item to Someone
This allows you to give an item to another member. It works very similarly to how "Send Money to Someone" works. Do note that items in the Trade Center will NOT be listed here.

Trade Center
This shows items that other members are selling. To put an item up for sale for the rest of the forum to purchase, go to your inventory and chose the item you want to be put up for trade. You can set a price and it will appear in the Trade Center. When someone purchases your item, you will receive a PM notification.

Do note that some items... are not renewed. ;)

Issues
Atrius is working his butt off to iron out the problems in this system. I might have also made mistakes myself and would greatly appreciate it if you notify either me or Atrius about an issue by replying in this thread.

Known problems:
-In the "Buy Stuff" section, only the first page of stuff appears unless you are in the deepest folder. So if you want to buy a badge that isn't listed, for example, go into the folder in the section where its listed.
-Permissions on groups... are really wonky to say the least. Until they are fixed, there will be no clan items available for trade.
-Current Edition Badges are still not up yet.
-Many of the badges don't have their badge number yet, so badge ID does not sort them.

Suggestions:
-Sorting Feature (from Role)

Badges that are not purchasable/sellable (Special):

Given as a thank you for helping with the forum in some way. Placed under "Standard Badges"

Staff Badges. If you would like your own custom staff badge, please contact me and I will make one for you, or you can send me one you made yourself. Your old staff badge will still be there. You must be a member of staff in order to request such a badge - this includes the Leader of the Clan Hack, Moderators, Global Moderators and Administrators. Any other requests will be ignored.

Contest badges

Until permissions are complete, there will be no way to remove or set as favourite badge for these badges, unless done manually. Please give me a PM if you would like either of these functions to occur. These badges will be worth 0 coins and will not be allowed to be put up for trade.

How to insert songs without using Sappy.

This is, bar none, the easiest and simpliest way to insert songs without using Sappy's auto compiler. Why wouldn't you want to use Sappy's auto compiler, you ask? Well, there's a LOT more you can do with the songs by inserting them manually. You can also track your steps - which makes it a lot easier to fix mistakes. In addition, it's easier to see what you're copying over, which makes it harder to mess up your rom in that way too.

This tutorial teaches you how to very easily import songs into a game without using Sappy. It does NOT teach you how to repeat the song or anything fancy like that. This tut is just showing the simpliest way to put in the song. If you're more advanced and know what you're doing, you can try doing things like repointing and all that fun stuff.

Tuts that will follow:
- How to insert repeating songs and change voices manually
- How to change voicegroups
- How to change voices and import from other games
- How to use a tile editor like a hex editor
- What Sappy 1.6 tells us

WHAT YOU NEED:
- A midi Editor (I personally use Anvil Studio - it may be useful to use this particular one since it has the "Repair Song" feature
- the Mid2agb Package
- Sappy 1.6
- A hex editor (or a tile editor, as in my case)

1. Make sure you edit your song so it can be imported using the program tr.exe. This program cannot read all midis, so it's important to check your midi for errors. Go into Anvil Studio and click "Repair Song". When it asks you if it wants to remove notes with a length of zero, click yes. Click no for anything else. In addition, order the tracks of the song in order of importance, because the later tracks may be cancelled out by earlier tracks.

2. Save your MIDI file into the /mid folder of your mid2agb folder. Open tr.exe. Click the button that says "??". If the song's name appears on the left side, it's all good. If it appears on the right side, then something is wrong with the midi and you need to fix it. Sometimes it's a whole track that's wrong so you have keep checking what it is until it appears on the left side.

3. Open both Song.gba (the file generated by tr.exe) and your Pokemon rom. Find the song at the end of Song.gba (the song file always starts with the byte 0xBC). Copy from that byte to the end of the file. (usually the song starts around 0x1B3BB8). An easy way to copy it is to find the offset of the song in Song.gba, and then change the pointer from 0x1XXXXX to 0xFXXXXX, but you can put it wherever you want. Make sure you know how to convert the pointers though.

4. Copy it into the Pokemon rom. If you're doing it the way I am, you're being lazy and just changing the pointer from 0x1XXXXX to 0xFXXXXX. Next, find the header of the song. The location of the header is different for every song, but an easy way to find it is that it's always the last part of the song, and it starts with a single byte - telling how many tracks are in the song. Also, the header's pointer always ends in 0, 4, 8 or C. If you're using Tile Molester like me, I show you what the header looks like in the video. Copy the address of this header down.

5. Open the Pokemon Ruby Rom in Sappy 1.6. (Pokemon Ruby's header is messed up in /data/sappy.lst, copy this:
AXVE, Pokémon Sapphire (U), sapphire, sapphire, sapp, &H45548C, &H15E, &H1D3
As the header and it should work)

Select your song, and when you play a song, three pointers will pop up.
DEF is the location of the song on the song table.
INST is the location of the voicegroup.
LOC is the location of the header.

Copy these values down as well.

6. In your hex editor, go to the header of your new song. Replace the first pointer with the pointer to the instrument set. Replace the rest of the pointers to where the tracks are. (If you did what I did, all you need to do is change all the first 1's to F's, ex. 0x123456 to 0xF23456).

7. Go to the pointer indicated by DEF. Replace this with the pointer to the header of the new song.

8. Test in Sappy 1.6. If it doesn't freeze, it will work. (it might also work if it get's an error, but it will definitely work if there are no errors)

9. Test in-game. If you don't like a certain track, you can change the song in the Midi editor and do the process again.. or change the values manually. But the latter will be covered in a later tutorial.

PLEASE WATCH PART 1 BEFORE WATCHING PART 2. I WILL NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS INVOLVING PART 1 ON THIS VIDEO.

This is tutorial will teach you some more advanced techniques with music hacking, all without using Sappy!

This song will teach you how to construct a simple loop. There's all sorts of ways you can put in loops into a song, the basics are shown here. You can try all sorts of different loops to get all sorts of different song styles.

Tuts that will follow:
- How to change voicegroups
- How to change voices and import from other games
- How to use a tile editor like a hex editor
- What Sappy 1.6 tells us

WHAT YOU NEED:
- A midi Editor (I personally use Anvil Studio - it may be useful to use this particular one since it has the "Repair Song" feature
- the Mid2agb Package
- Sappy 1.6
- A hex editor (or a tile editor, as in my case)

1. Have your midi ready for insertion. Make sure every track is exactly the same length. Copy the first track and paste it into a new file. Don't forget to change the tempo to the original song's tempo!

A note: With drumlines, make sure your instrument is "Acoustic Grand", and your channel is NOT 10.

2. Insert the song using tr.exe, and put the song data into the rom into some freespace. Copy the address.

3. Go to the end of the track in the rom (indicated by the byte 0xB1). Change 0xB1 into 0xB2. Put the pointer (08XXXXXX) after that. Then, finish by putting an end command (0xB1) after that. (altogether B208XXXXXX01). Without the 0xB1, it WILL FREEZE.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for all the tracks in the song.

5. To set up a header, find a segment of freespace. MAKE SURE THE ADDRESS TO THE BEGINNING ENDS IN 0, 4, 8, OR C. The header is set up with three lines (consisting of four bytes of data each)
- the first line tells us the number of tracks.
- the second line is a pointer to the voicegroup.
- the third and other lines are pointers to the individual tracks.

Insert the data as shown n the video.

6. Test in Sappy.

7. Test in game.

How Music Hacking Works. (for people who want to music hack)

Note! All hex is as shown in VBA's Memory Viewer.

Order of appearance in ROM: Voicegroups. Music Table. Song Header(s) and tracks. Instrument Samples.

Voicegroups

- A voice is determined by three four-byte long sections. There are five different kinds of voices. Voicegroups are word aligned.

   1. The most common is that does not seperate into two sections. The voice will be using the same WAV file no matter what the pitch. First four-byte section identifies the voicegroup type. Second section is the pointer to the actual sample. Third section is envelope of the instrument over time. (I currently don't understand how this works. You could investigate, if you like.)

In hacking, this type of voice is the most useful, and personally, I always use it. There are many other roms that use this for all wave sample based instruments. I highly recommend using this type as a default for inserting voices in a voicegroup.

Example (in 8, 16 and 32 bit format)

00 3C 00 00
2C 09 2A 08
FF 00 FF A5

3C00 0000
092C 082A
00FF A5FF

00003C00
082A092C
A5FF00FF

   2. The second type is commonly used for instruments in Pokémon like the String Ensemble. First four-byte section identifies the voicegroup type. Second section is the pointer to two instruments. The two instruments are actually two separate wave samples, one for high notes and one for low notes. The final section is a pointer to the data that instructs the system how to separate this data.

I have only seen this type in the Pokémon games, but it may be appearing elsewhere.

Example (in 8, 16 and 32 bit formats)

40 00 00 00
04 02 43 08
24 52 45 08

0040 0000
0204 0843
5224 0845

00000040
08430204
08455224

   3. The third type of voicegroup are the Drumkits. They seperate the notes into individual sounds of their own. The first four-byte section is used to identify the voice type. The second section is the pointer to the drum kit's individual samples. The third section is supposed to be the envelope, but it really doesn't matter because the samples have their own envelopes.

This type is used in any game with a drumkit.

Example (in 8, 16 and 32 bit formats)

80 00 00 00
F8 FE 42 08
00 00 00 00

0080 0000
FEF8 0842
0000 0000

00000080
0842FEF8
00000000

   4. Digitally assigned. These voices are not practical for hacking as their sounds are derived from the programming itself. There are several types; in Pokémon the type is determined by the first four bytes (what normally identifies the voice type). In Golden Sun, this type looks like a type 1 voicegroup, but its pointer leads to an argument for the game's programming.

   5. Blank Voice. Blank Voices are voices that are not used. They look like so (in 8, 16 and 32 bit formats):

01 3C 00 00
02 00 00 00
00 00 0F 00

3C01 0000
0002 0000
0000 000F

00003C01
00000002
000F0000

Voicegroups can have 128 voices, starting at voice 0 (like a standard MIDI map).

Music Table

Each seperate section of the music table is 2 4-byte long sections. The first section is the pointer. The second section are value that may be 0000 0000, 0001 0001 or 0002 0002. Their function eludes me, but it may have something to do with how it interacts with the game.

Song Headers

Song headers are arranged in a very straight forward manner. It is always [the number of tracks in the song] + 2 4-byte sections.

The first section stars with how many tracks are in the song, along with an unknown byte and some zeros. The number of tracks can range from 0x0 to 0xF. The second section is the pointer to the voicegroup to be used. The third pointer leads to the tracks.

COMPLETE TRACK INFORMATION:

(This part is also included in my ELF guide; I owe Atrius for some of this information)

The audio track data is a list of commands and arguments for playing music/sound effects.

Anything below 0x80 is an argument, and anything 0x80 and above is a command.

0x80 - 0xB0 = Rest commands of varying lengths, to wait a certain amount of time before playing each note.

0xB1 = Stop command, to signal the end of the audio track. From what I've noticed even if a song loops it has one of these after the loop command.

0xB2 = Jump command, to jump the playback pointer to another location in memory. Often used to loop songs by jumping back to the beginning of it.

0xB3 = Jump command where playback can jump back to after it again later. Used when you want to repeat part of a song before continuing with the rest of it.

0xB4 = Return to last 0xB3 command.

0xB5-0xBA = Unidentified

0xBB = Set Tempo

0xBC = Set Pitch offset

0xBD = Set instrument

0xBE = Set Volume

0xBF = Set Panning

0xC0 - 0xCE = Unidentified

0xCF - 0xFF = Play notes of varying lengths.

BE FF = A volume command with an argument of 0xFF (Volume is an odd exception to the rule that arguments must be less than 0x80)

BC 00 = Set the pitch offset to zero

BB 01 = Very low tempo so that the note is drawn out long enough for voice samples to play their full length.

BD 00 = Set the instrument to the first entry in the instrument map.

CF 3C 7F = Play a note with a pitch of 0x3C (Right in the middle of the available range), and a volume of 0x7F (The maximum available)

B0 = Wait long enough for the note to finish playing

B1 = End the audio track

And some arguments for those commands:

Arguments:

Pitch

Pitch is very easy to understand. It is follows the byte 0xBC (which is usually the first byte in a given track anyhow). Pitch works like this:

0x00 is the base, equivalent to Middle C.
0x0C is one octave higher; High C.
0xF4 is one octave lower; Low C.

If you haven't noticed, it goes by increments of 0x0C, so for higher increments, they would be 0x18, 0x24, ect, while for lower increments they would be 0xE8, 0xDC, ect.

Tracks can be transposed by any value, however, so if you wanted it to be in a different key, you could change these values. If done, make sure to add/subtract 0x0C when raising/lowering octaves.

Tempo

Tempo is simply the tempo transfered into Hex. So, if your original tempo was 80, you would put in 0x50. It follows a 0xBB byte.

Instruments

The instruments correspond with the instruments of the voicegroup. Although the instruments can be anything you want, the typical way is to have the instruments correspond directly. It follows a 0xBD The direct map:

Volume

Volume is a simple concept as well, but unlike most of the song arguments, it must be a value less than 0x80, or else (for some whacked out reason) it acts as a rest o.o

It follows 0xBE.

Panning

I need to investigate panning a little more, but I do believe that 0x00 is the neutral value. Either that, or it's 0x0C. I believe that pan's range is from 0x00 to 0x0F.

Note: By making your program locate the commands for changing volume, instrument, pitch, volume and panning, it could be very easy to edit (and very VERY useful).

Wave Samples.

Wave Samples are usually the last part of the music section. For the most part the waves should not be edited (unless using a program to convert and insert waves to the GBA's system), each wave sample has an important header that effects how the wave is played.

Here is a sample

40000000
1800 01A2

The first word is a very important one. If it is 40000000, that means the wave sample will repeat its sound after it completes a cycle (like String Ensamble). If it is 00000000, that means it will simply stop after completing one cycle.

The next half-word... I have no clue what it does. But the one after it is pitch. Divide the value in half to lower the instrument an octave. Double it to raise it an octave. Standard is 0xCA.

The next word is only used if the sample repeats after a cycle. It indicates the exact byte to begin the repeat.

The last word indicates at which byte the sample ends.
Simurgh

By Rachel Merryfield

Summary
The year is 3567. The world is in a downward spiral - with humanity in tow. 800 years ago, a massive meteorite crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. Although the tsunamis that followed were devastating, it's what the blow did to the waters that caused this ruin.

The meteorite, upon crashing into the ocean, was large enough to penetrate its surface, releasing highly acidic chemicals. In addition, it crashed on a shelf underwater, colliding with the earth and releasing more acids from the rock.

The end result was devastating. Earth's waters were highly toxic, and the acidity was absorbed by the rain. In an international conference, the countries decided they had to merge and lift the continents.

The new countries - Samunia (Western Europe), Abelon (US + Mexico), Nordland (Canada), Kainudra (South America), Ethiopia (Africa), Arabia (Middle East), Cossonia (Eastern Europe to Urals), Wanuland (Asia), Nipon (Japan) and Australia (derp) - suffered severe population loses. The population eventually leveled out at a total of about 40 million worldwide, with much of this concentrated in Samunia, Abelon, Kainudra and Nipon.

Over the years, Samunia and Abelon would have constant wars between eachother. The stakes were high - if the continent was subject to too much destruction, it would fall into the abyss, as seen by the unfortunate example of Australia.

In this tight political climate, a young Samunian boy, Julian Freedman, embarks on a journey to follow his dream of finding a Simurgh, a member of a legendary race of humans that could transform into phoenixes, so that it can help purify the world and its people.

Current progression:
Three years ago, Julian was told to flee far from his hometown by his parents. Living feral, Julian uses his modified pistol, given as an heirloom, to fend for himself.

Julian was discovered by a wandering soldier, Simon, and were attacked by a pair of Cuckoo Eagles. Defeating them, they head to Simon's residence, where he fosters him for a short period of time as Julian builds a flying machine. Elaine, Simon's wife, helps him test the aircraft, but he's blown off of the continent. Simon is very angry at Elaine for not warning Julian earlier of the windy conditions.

At this point, Julian has landed on Abelon and was taken into shelter by Kouki Yamato. Kouki thinks its strange that a Samunian boy would be allowed to learn how to engineer aircraft, but Julian reveals that his father taught him. Upon questioning, Julian reveals that he last saw him 3 years ago. Despite his condolences, though, Kouki explains the urgency of getting Julian back to Samunia - or else a world war could break out.

While Julian was flying back, he was spotted by a warship, and was shot down with a laser blast. He fell deep into the toxic clouds below...

A strange scientist, with a deformed body covered in feathers and a bird-face, finds a peculiar creature in the underworld near his apparent lab. He takes it inside... and it turns out the creature is the Simurgh! And not only that... the Simurgh turns out to be Julian! Dazed, confused and barely keeping his power under control, he rips himself from the harnesses holding him down. He breaks free from the building and goes out to explore this unknown, desolate land.

There, he discovers that a group of people are being held as prisoner in a strange compound near mountains. He finds Elaine unconscious - where he decides that this is his opportunity to make the world a "better place", like he said earlier on page 005. He grabs Elaine, and sets himself ablaze, so he can lift an airship full of innocents into the sky. He's going to liberate them!

Meanwhile, in Abelon, Kouki ponders about Julian... until he gets a sudden surprise - the Simurgh, along with the ship and Elaine, appear over the horizon!
