1  The Community / Tech, Gaming and Entertainment / Dynasty Warriors NEXT Review for PS Vita on: 05, March, 2012, 08:00:18 PM

The latest game in the Koei Warriors franchise, Dynasty Warriors NEXT is the first member of the franchise to be released on the brand new Playstation Vita, released by Koei Tecmo on the same day as the official release of the Vita, February 22nd.  For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Dynasty Warriors is set in the feudal era of China, based upon the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.  Focused around intense fighting action and seat-of-your-pants strategic thinking, Dynasty Warriors produces a rather unique gaming experience.

Making full use of the features provided by this new handheld, Dynasty Warriors NEXT takes that unique experience to the next level.  Gameplay features make use of both the touch screen and the rear touchpad, motion sensors, and even online play.  For many parts of the game, you can control your character or pan left and right to explore your 3D world by moving your Vita around.  Even the cameras get a part in the game, as you can take pictures, doctor them up a bit, and send them to others.

The point of the game is to take out your opponents by capturing their bases, dropping their defenses so that you can take over the territory.  For those who are familiar with the series, I would like to point out the new features.

Before I even opened the box, I read the back, and noticed the added Edit Mode, which allows you to create your own characters.  The character creator may be limited, but the possibilities are endless.  With 20 hairstyles for each gender, and almost as many hair colors, you will find it easy to find something you like.  There are 3 different face shapes, 1 for young, 1 for adult, and 1 for old.  Each shape has 6 different eyes, 6 different noses, and 6 different mouths.  And with 10 skin tones, you're sure to create the perfect face.  You can change the height of your character, and decide if they're thin, or if you want them to be built like stone.  Clothing items are interchangeable, and can be unlocked throughout the game.  And if that's not enough, you get to customize your stats, choose your weapon, decide if your character is better at fighting enemy hordes, enemy officers, or taking control of enemy bases.  You even get to decide the strategy that your character is known for.

And as if the character creator wasn't enough, they went ahead and gave every character 2 Musou attacks.  The standard one, performed by pressing O, is decent enough.  But they included Speed Musou, a separate attack activated by pressing on both sides of the touch screen at the same time.  But wait, there's more.  The addition of a Break Gauge allows you to simply tap the screen once, and instantly you can take out a number of enemy soldiers, and it will automatically capture the base you're in!  Not to mention, bases captured by a Direct Break cannot be recaptured by the enemy.

All of these new features would have been enough, in my humble opinion.  But that still isn't all.  When facing high ranking enemy officers, sometimes you will leave the map for a moment, engaging against that officer in a one-on-one Duel.  When you've won the duel, you can return to kicking your enemies around the battlefield.  There are also new types of stages, used for intermediary mini-games between scenes.  In several cases, you must defend yourself by shooting/cutting down approaching enemies, chase after a fleeing enemy officer, and there is even one mini-game in which you must write a kanji by revealing it and then touching the appropriate lines on your screen.  These new features help to increase the realism of the game, while keeping gameplay fresh and exciting.

Now, I know that I've been completely positive about this, and with everything they have, including a storyline that spans several of the old console games, it's hard not to be.  But we come to the point where people will start to wonder what the problems with the game are.  So far, I have yet to experience a valid negative aspect of the game itself.  I have been having a couple of problems, but I am pretty sure that those problems were with my system being left on for too long than having anything to do with the game.  In other words, if you experience problems you can't explain, try shutting the system off and letting it cool down for a bit.  Yes, this means I have yet to find a con in this game, unless you consider yelling at the game about why they had to kill off some of your favorite characters a con.  Have fun hunting after Lu Bu!!!   Happy

Hope you enjoyed.
2  Golden Sun Resources / Misc. GS Hacking / Golden Sun - Star Magician Edition on: 31, January, 2012, 04:01:40 AM
I want to see what everyone thinks of the idea of playing through a Golden Sun game entirely redesigned so that you're playing through as the Star Magician, possibly in disguise, using the mystic balls to battle with and everything.  I think it would be fun and funny, and I'd love to see the Star Magician fight Dullahan, hehe.  But I was thinking of, if the editor ever becomes advanced enough to achieve it, removing all the other player characters and having the Star Magician be the star.  No djinn, but probably still be able to perform summons somehow.  Probably have the endgame be how Star Magician meets the characters and maybe even include him leaving Treasure Isle in search of something new to do.  Have a Dark Dawn spin-off that picks up where that leaves off, lol.  Who would want to see it?  If enough people seem interested, I might just do it!
3  The Community / Creative Works / Golden Sun BYOND on: 21, November, 2011, 09:19:34 PM
Hey, everyone.  I'm Kioll, your friendly neighborhood oddball.  I would like to share with you all a project that I've been wanting to do for a while, which I feel is made possible by Atrius's TLA Editor.  That said, I would like to Introduce you to Golden Sun BYOND.

For those who don't know, BYOND (Build Your Own Net Dream), is an amateur game making platform which allows those who can understand the code to create and host their own homebrew games, playable by anyone who has the BYOND client installed.  Allowing for both single-player and multi-player games to be produced, the BYOND client has complete interactivity with other players, although it is a bit limited.  That being said, I can now describe the game with everyone reading being on equal footing.

Golden Sun BYOND (Preliminary title, also considering Golden Sun: Age of Alchemy) is designed to be a multi-player version of the classic Golden Sun games.  It's mostly plans at the moment, I have all of a few lines of code done so far, but I plan to have character creation, allowing players to create 1 character of their choice, choosing class and elemental alignment, and randomizing stats based on the character's role.  I plan to include a player party system, and possibly an option of creating an NPC party, a more extensive class system covering all the classes from all the current games and a few new ones, the ability to learn certain psynergies of other elements, allowing single characters to go further on their own, and access to the full map of Weyard (GS1 and 2, Dark Dawn may be added later...).  I plan to include all of the classic locations, djinn, and psynergies, while tastefully expanding upon that.

Planned features include:
A 9 or 10 djinni limit per character, no repeats (including the ability to free a djinni in favor of new ones, if so inclined.)
The original mechanics system (or at least as close as I can get.)
Windowed fight scenes and menu (to avoid issues with switching screens; as I said, BYOND is limited)
A global chat system
A "home town" system, allowing characters to start from certain places (Such as Prox, or Imil, or even Garoh ;) )
A racial selection (although it may have to wait for later versions...)
Up to 8 player parties, allowing for any combination of characters (Want an all Mars Adept team?  Go for it!)
New and classic puzzles.
Storyline (Want to play through the old story with new characters?  Great!  Or follow your own sequence of events, make your own story!)
PVP battle (Go to the arena, battle against other characters.)
Limited Psynergy customization.  (Don't like a psynergy you have?  Trade it in for a new one!)
Customized character portraits
Dual elemental power (Raise your elemental level in the element closest to your own, for single characters only; no parties may be formed with these characters.)
New, stronger monsters (Want to be the most powerful adept?  Sure, you can level a little higher now, just... don't die!   Happy)

Input, ideas, anyone familiar with BYOND's Dream Maker code, planning help, some of the harder to find sprites (like the psynergy rings, the ones that appear when using psynergy in the overworld?  Can't find a working sprite to save my life!), any of these kinds of help and more are desired and most welcome.  Also, formulae, battle mechanics, well-liked improvements to the original system, all ideas like that are also welcome.  Also, Pixel Art help.

Alright, so, I suppose this is where I make my presence known....  the name is Kioll.  Aligned with the glorious power of fire, I am a powerful, skilled warrior who has fought many battles...  And I'm full of ****.  Actually, I'm something of an amateur developer, although I don't seem to be very good at it.  But, that's what they invented teachers and practice for, so...  I found the TLA editor on a Google search, and after trying it, it seems like it would be a very good tool for something I've been wanting to do for a long time, once it's updated enough to perform all the appropriate tasks.  This special project is a fanmade multiplayer Golden Sun game.  The Editor gives me access to sprites, variables, and information necessary to properly emulate the original system...  And for that, I tip my hat to Atrius; thank you for such a wonderful tool.  I'm an open book; ask me anything you like.

Daddy Poi's Oily Gorillas: To think that events are not done via a tilemap in GS3 is interesting, and they'd just be cubes in the size of a tile (I think)... with given coords.
