31  The Community / Open Discussion / Reasons on: November 30, 2014, 11:58:16 PM
---Title changed to Reasons to make this topic more generic.

Excuses:

Q: What are the rules to excuses? When should you use them, and when should you not?

Excuses generally come in two categories.
-Either the thing is too big for you. (Fear/Anxiety, Time Consuming, Confusing, Stressful, being in two places at one time, etc.)
-Or the thing is too small for you. (Ex: Boring/not interested, Arrogance, etc.)

Do you believe that having excuses is a sign of weakness? (I think maybe so, since if you had no weakness, you'd be all-powerful and could do everything.)

So sometimes I wonder if it's better not to give an excuse even if you have one. ( Plus, it's not like people like hearing them. :P ... At least not in the aggressive type of way. )

Now for some quotes!
"Excuses are tools of the incompetent, and those who specialize in them seldom go far."
Ben Franklin wrote, "He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else."
Gabriel Meurier stated, "He who excuses himself, accuses himself."

Feel free to post your favorite excuse in this topic! (And perhaps include a story behind it, if you are willing.)
32  The Editor / Golden Sun Hacking / Drop a coin here, will ya? - Hacking the Spring! on: November 24, 2014, 09:45:30 AM
Lemuria's spring seems to be done in map code.

The Golden Sun Wiki doesn't have their list organized, so I'm here to provide you with some Lucky Medals to throw into my beautiful spring!

02009700 = Item Rewards for using Lucky Medals. The below list shows these in the order they are listed.
0200037D = 15 bytes for 15 items. These are the chance values. (Relative to the other items, ofcourse... so not in percent format.)
The three items listed under a category have top priority for that category, but your chances of getting them may decrease by half as you obtain them.
The priority for the other categories still stand... so the ones in the center are the rarest for all categories. (At least until you have obtained enough less-favorable items.)
-Items that fit under a less favorable position than what you had will not be obtained.
-Items that fit under a more favorable position than what you had can be obtained, but they're rarer.

Center (You can get two of each to bring them to their rarest point.)
*If first time, you get the Eclipse Summon tablet, and flag 0x90B is raised so you can't get it again. ; This one can only be obtained if you land in the center, unlike the next three items.
Hestia Blade
Aegis Shield
Erebus Armor

1st ring (You can get three of each to bring them to their rarest point.)
Minerva Helm
Mighty Axe
Floral Dress

2nd ring (You can get four of each to bring them to their rarest point.)
Crown of Glory
Leda's Bracelet
Fireman's Pole

3rd ring (You can get five of each to bring them to their rarest point.)
Brilliant Circlet
Crafted Gloves
Wild Coat

Outside (You can get six of each to bring them to their rarest point.)
*Best case scenario for Center items is about 50%? (Must not have gotten any Center items, and 1st ring+ must be at their rarest point. Which requires 54+ Lucky Medals.  Currently, only like 21 Lucky Medals are known about, so it's likely not feasible without a data transfer.)
Potion
Psy Crystal
Water of Life

0200973C = Coin values for each position.
Center = 20 coins
1st ring = 10 coins
2nd ring = 2 coins
3rd ring = 1 coin
Outside = Nothing (To edit this one, you'll likely need to modify the code.)

This is for GS2, so GS1 might be listed later.

Can anyone tell me if 60 Lucky Medals can be obtained in GS2? Since that's the minimum you'd need to get all of these to their rarest positions. 61 if you want the Summon Tablet. ; Even if there was exactly that many, the chance of getting them all that low is probably unlikely.) However, I can see a possible code hack that one could do to make it so that items aren't retrievable after obtaining enough of them.
33  The Community / Debates / Reward Good xor Punish Bad on: November 20, 2014, 12:14:05 PM
Is it better to reward the people that do good things?
Or is it better to punish the people who do bad things?

If you had to choose one exclusively, which would you pick, and why?

---
To add a little twist... What if you had to choose between rewarding bad, or punishing good? ... How would you order those four? (Or five, if we have a "Do nothing" option.)

I can see the first set of questions being a possiblity of life when pressed for time, but my added twist likely wouldn't follow human morals.

Edit: What would you pick to follow yourself, rather than the entire world?
34  The Community / Debates / Is it worth celebrating Halloween? on: November 01, 2014, 11:36:46 PM
Here is a debate... I'm sure this one is controversial.

Someone has said it was about death and spirits.

To me, these are things that are clearly about death:
Skeletons
Vampires (& bats, blood)
Zombies
Spiders (Like the black widow that is known for killing its mate.)
Spirits (Because it's like talking to the dead.)

--
I think that the right way to go for Halloween is giving out  healthy and tasty treats, and doing non-spooky costume parties. ; Just simply not doing anything is like having no Community, in fact, why not just have parties everyday? (Even though I'm not much of a party goer, unfortunately.)
35  The Community / Open Discussion / 30-day Cold Shower Challenge / Cold Shower Therapy on: November 01, 2014, 03:51:08 AM
Has anyone tried to take a cold shower for five minutes? If so, have you done it for 30 days?

I was reading up on this stuff earlier... and well, there may have been discussion on health advantages...

Discuss away.
(Also, this is good timing, because Halloween.... well, dead bodies are cold, and cold showers are cold.  Although, that's beside the point.)
36  Golden Sun Hacking Community / Feedback / About Site Code on: May 10, 2014, 10:52:48 PM
To admin(s):
-Would y'all consider having a copy of the forum code and data anywhere to be downloaded? (NOT including user data.)
-If we wanted to make a feature for the forums, do we need the site's code? Or do we just go to Simple Machines and grab a copy of the original? (Under the same version: 1.1.18)
-If I decided to make some features, would they be considered as a feature for this forum if they are good enough?

One project idea I have is to revamp Clan Requests... with some random-ish ideas.
-Have a page where Leaders can set up their application.
-I'm not sure if the application should be sent automatically to users as a PM when users click a button? Or perhaps the applications will have their own pages. (Most likely the latter.)
-Perhaps leaders can be optionally notified somehow when applicants view the application.
-Make an option for if the application can only be viewed if the member is unaffiliated?
-If you submit an application for a different Clan while in a different Clan, have a warning that you'll leave your current Clan to go and join it if accepted.
-Applications are sent to Leaders, the leaders can choose to accept them into the clan without the requirement of an Admin.
37  Golden Sun Hacking Community / Feedback / Codename DOT: Organize Debates, Open, & Tech? on: April 28, 2014, 10:42:35 AM
What's with these forums?! Don't you think they need organizing somehow?

I have posted something in Feedback for the forum... but Wolf was the only one to respond. I recon this needs a separate topic with a better explanation.
I would also ask if the Voting Polls forum is necessary or not, but I figure it's of slightly less importance to this topic at this moment.

Let's start with Charon's description of the Tech forum: http://forum.goldensunhacking.net/index.php?topic=472.0
Quote
I have had to move several topics that have been placed in this section that should be placed in the Entertainment section. Here is a list of things that should be posted in the Entertainment section:
-movies and television
-books
-graphic novels (but NOT just art; if you want to discuss a graphic novel artist`s non-graphic novel works, you may post them in this section)
-games
-music
-anything pertaining to foreign entertainment culture such as manga or anime
-actors, musicians, authors or graphic novel artists
-anything to do with computers, their accessories or the Internet (exception: Youtube thread)
-any debate pertaining to the above subjects.

Anything that does not pertain to the above topics may be included in this section. Anything pertaining to the Golden Sun franchise should go in its cooresponding section.
Does all this still apply?

-From what I can see, any debate on entertainment fits in two forums: Debates, and the Tech forum.
-Some topics from each can fit in one of the others.

To support my argument, here are some examples: (I'm not listing all of them.)

Topics that are in Open Discussion that may belong in Tech:
Google Streets (Internet)
Social Networking Banking (Internet) (This one was in Tech, but GM moved it to Open Discussion)
All PS3 Users will be Enraged at this "Patent" (Gaming)
Email Services (Internet)
How to tell a good story in a video game: Episodes or no episodes? (Gaming)
Golden Sun and MineCraft (Gaming)
How do you rip GBA music? (Gaming & Music) (On second thought, this might go in General Hacking?)

...that may belong in Creative Works.
RoleQuest1: Elemental Cirno (Gaming)
Golden Sun Empires needs your help! (Gaming)
story time for the people (Well, Kain has a Storytime topic in Creative Works.)

...that may belong in Debates.
Bill S.978; What do you think?

Topics in Debates that may or may not belong in Tech:
Xp or Vista (Computing)

Man, as you can see, I'm not good with conversations, so for most everything else, you may have to examine and post what you think. (There's a chance this post may be edited as well.)

Q: What do you suggest we do to make this forum more organized?
38  The Community / Open Discussion / Credit Report/Score on: April 27, 2014, 04:29:03 AM
(Here's hoping this is a tech topic. Otherwise, this might go in Open Discussion, but we can still discuss how technology is going forward with how people can be confirmed as having good credit.)

It's possible that people who do not borrow money may not have a credit report... And I am not sure if people outside the U.S. have this type of thing or not. (I mean I'm not sure how all this works.)

From what it looks like, you can get a free annual credit report from three companies if you go to: annualcreditreport.com (When I googled, I saw this site linked from a .gov website, so I assume it's legit.)

This topic is mainly to answer these questions:
Does anyone here check out their Credit Report/Score. If so, how often? (And when would be the time you'd check?)
And if you do check up on it, which options do you take? (Ex: Major Credit Baeraus: Equilfax, Experian, TransUnion)
39  Golden Sun Hacking Community / Feedback / Site Name on: April 21, 2014, 09:17:45 AM
This is where everyone gives feedback on what they think of the site name.

I think it's a mostly good name, except... some problems come to mind.

"Hacking"

1.) Some filters may block this site when mis-conceived to be Security Hacking and stuff... I had this happen once in high school a few years back. (Yes, high school used filters.) And I've heard other people on this site may have had similar issues. (There was a post in another topic...) This type of thing might have a small factor in potential activity, but not much. (By 0.01% , probably.)

2.) If the site becomes more Community Project focused, and that project isn't a hack, it might seem strange..

3.) Long title.

Overall, the title does seem to be straight and to the point for what the site was primarily about, so I can't complain.
40  The Community / Open Discussion / Social Network Banking on: April 15, 2014, 03:36:04 PM
So, does Social Networking and Banking mix?

From what I heard on the news, it seemed like Facebook was going to go into banking... (Probably starting in Europe...) I think they may have to get approval from certain people, though..?

They have tried one values system before, known as Facebook Credits around 2011-2012, but I think it failed mainly because they were only used for games/apps, probably couldn't give them to friends, and weren't useful...

But if Facebook turns into a bank, what does that mean for everyone?

Will they too also use it as a means for Verification? (Like Paypal?)
Will we see people giving money to each other for likes and comments on posts? Etc?
41  The Community / Debates / To Kill a Something on: March 21, 2014, 02:42:25 PM
This topic is here to discuss when you think killing is appropriate. (Awful topic idea... but...)

(Edit:  Here are some example questions you can choose to answer. You may leave some out, change some of them, or add your own.)
-Do you believe in random killing? How about sacrifices? Does this include only animals, humans, or both? (Edit: How about crickets/roaches, flies, ants, spiders, mosquitoes, gnats, etc?)
-Do you believe in abortions? (If so, to what limit?)
-Do you believe in killing people who do treason? (How about depending on if it was trying to hurt the Gov't or not?) Think about Edward Snowden, except, I don't think he meant to actually hurt the Gov't?
-Do you believe in killing false prophets? (Not sure if I should put this bullet here, but going to ask, anyway.)
-Do you believe in killing people who are a threat to mankind? (Even if they haven't killed anyone, yet?)
-Do you believe in killing people ahead of time when they are about to die anyway? (So that they won't have to live with the pain of whatever the are dying from.)

-If you died, how would you like to be dealt with? (Ex: Burial via coffin, mausoleum, cremation? ; Perhaps given to science?)
-Where would you want your assets to go to? (Government, charity, loved ones, etc?)
42  The Community / Tech, Gaming and Entertainment / Password Security on: March 15, 2014, 06:38:14 AM
What does everyone do for password security?

Do you use the same password for everything? Or certain passwords for different things? (Like if it has money value, social value, or what other.)

How about usernames and emails? Do you use different ones for different circumstances, or the same one?

This question is being asked because the more times you use a certain password, the more likely it'll be un-secure. Not all sites are trustworthy, so if you register to the wrong one at the wrong time with your common details, the perpetrators have your log-in info.

You might wonder why I'm posting this topic in Tech, but that's because this might closely relate to Password Managers.

Password Managers could make is easier to:
-Make new unguessable passwords.
-Follow password guidelines.

And if you can store a file that lists all your passwords into Google Drive, or a Thumb Drive... you should still be able to get around on other computers. This doesn't mean you are 100% safe from password theft, however. Since you still have to avoid malwares, etc. (And especially don't fall into a Cryptolocker trap where files get encrypted.)

Discuss.
43  The Community / Tech, Gaming and Entertainment / Bitcoin on: March 15, 2014, 04:04:05 AM
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried Bitcoin, a digital currency that seems convertable to US Dollars, and maybe even other currencies? (Not sure.) I think it has potential to be added as a payment method for online stores and what other... Another advantage is that you can get your own Bitcoin Wallet "anonymously."

There may be many websites that offer Bitcoin wallets. I have looked at a couple of them, but haven't decided which ones were good.

One of those places is Coinbase: coinbase.com/?r=5322d9f3e8a1839719000130&utm_campaign=user-referral&src=referral-link

(Or you can just go to the site directly: coinbase.com ; But why waste up an opportunity to randomly sign up as a referral ... since you got nothing to lose. Either way, it doesn't matter.)

Quote from: Coinbase
For every friend you invite to Coinbase, we'll send both you and them $5 worth of bitcoin when they complete a buy or sell of at least $100!
^Although, I'm not sure if that is for a single item, transaction, or total. ; If it is item or transaction, it probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference?

--
There may be ways to get bitcoins for free, but usually the amount is so small that it's better to get a real job. - But there's still a very very tiny chance you could "win good" on some "gambling" things... I quote "gambling" because there's at least one where you can "roll" a number, without having to spend any bitcoins.

Theory:  Also, I don't think I recommend actually buying Bitcoins with U.S. Dollars because the value of Bitcoins probably decreases fast? ; Although, even U.S. Dollars may have a 2% increased yearly inflation rate already... so..

--
By the way, for those who are doing stuff with money online: I strongly recommend using multiple usernames or passwords. Example:  Atleast 2 unique passwords: One for trusted money sources & email, and the other for all other sites.
44  The Editor / Golden Sun: The Lost Age Editor / GS Editor - Poll #2: Unpacking on: February 16, 2014, 11:00:07 AM
Yeah, another opinion poll already!

Here I go thinking of a new concept idea for the editor... Basically, what if I literally unpacked the ROM? I mean to take all of the code and tables that one would resize, and make them into individual .asm, .txt, .dat, etc... files....? That way, I wouldn't have to manually update my pointers, and can just equip all the files together when "Compiled." There's a possibility that it might be a trade-off, but...

Unpacking: This one may require plenty of seconds to "Decompile" and "Compile" when loading and saving the ROM? ; This may also take up more space on the hard drive.
Direct ROM management: May require me to update table references in my editor bank file.... etc. Not that I see that as much of a problem?

I have not thought a whole lot about this.

Discuss.
45  The Community / Debates / Gay Marriage: Thoughts? on: February 13, 2014, 12:46:53 AM
This might be controversial... but I'm thinking there are many answers that would make this no.
1.) Religion: Some Christians think Gay Marriage means you won't inherit the kingdom of God, and others may think otherwise.
2.) For the children? This may be controversial, but you need a man and a woman to have a baby.
3.) If men happen to be more accepted than women, women get better treatment since men pay the bills.

If it happens to be a "good thing", what makes it good in a way that is different from a traditional marriage (man and woman)?

My belief is that this could be a bad thing... but for my opinion, I think being Single is the best way to go...
