Are you using a hard copy of the game on GBA, or a digital copy on an Emulator?  This might explain why he needs gameshark codes if it's a physical copy.

I was under the assumption he had a physical game this whole time, especially after I suggested he could use Codebreaker (unencrypted codes) IF he was playing on emulator and got no comment on it. But since he got it to work by manipulating the RAM directly, he's obviously playing on emulator.
