I think the reason this has gotten blown out of proportion is because of.

the Mayan calendar ends on December 21 2012 at 11:56AM.
they vanished over night as well as other ancient civilizations.
and they vanished almost exactly 3000 years ago.

The sun is in its solar maxiumus where it is most active with solar flares
it goes through this faze every 12 years and is known to release a flare at least once at some time in the last 3 years of this faze that could wipe out all technology on the planet.

Also the Mayans studied the sun and the stars for thousands and have been considered to have known almost as much about them as us today.

the magnetic layer around the earth is positively charged. and most solar flares are also positively charged and repel each other. there is also a magnetic spin to solar flares and the earth's magnetic layer.

Very rare but if a negatively charged solar flare with a magnetic spin opposite to the earth's were to hit, it would peel off the atmosphere.

Of course we have to deal with this every 12 years (6 years of increase activity, 6 years of decrease) and nothing bad has happed so far.
Over all this is just worrying about things you can't control and there is now a whole lot we could do about it any way.
