Not necessarily from a game, but because of one? I mean, if Sonic ever makes a comeback, that will certainly end the world as we know it. Not to offend anyone, it is just that Mario is pretty much known as the video game character, even amongst non-gamers. If Sonic were to make a comeback, then that could change a lot.

If, in there, had you said "end of the world as we know it," and not simply "end of the world," you may have had a point. However, omission of those four critical words, "as we know it," renders the statement silly, and your retort meaningless. Furthermore, the state of the popularity of video game characters is nearly irrelevant to the development of mankind. Now, if a video game character became a central figure in a cultural phenomenon, that may indicate something deeper is going on, but even that would need to be on a massive scale to change the face of the world; it would need to be a completely pervasive phenomenon that changes the way people think. While I don't think it's wrong to believe that video games have the power to change society, it is wrong to believe that they haven't already done so, and it is also wrong to believe that they have done so alone. A single video game character isn't going to change anything, but the overarching cultural phenomenon of today's youth playing video games certainly has changed how people perceive the world, and will continue to change it. Likewise, video games alone cannot be pinned as the cause for cultural shifts, as all forms of technology have changed the way people operate in and perceive the world. Technology is what changes the world as we know it.

As humans have progressed, they developed metallurgy; they developed agriculture; they developed the steam engine; they developed computers; they developed nanotechnology. Any one of these could be considered a singularity, changing the face of the world as we know it in unprecedented and unpredictable ways. If we're to play the "end of the world as we know it" game, the obvious answer here is that it will be due to some newly developed technology in the upcoming years. Considering that the time between singularities in the development of mankind has become successively smaller each iteration, it is not far-fetched to believe that we will see another singularity within our lifetimes. However, due to the very nature of singularities - the results of an unprecedented newly developed technology - it is nearly impossible to guess what it might be.

I would guess when most people say "the end of the world", it means "all humans die". But maybe most people need some more insight in the actual meaning of the statement.

Immortality sucks, bro. Living to 999 may not be "immortality," but it's close enough that it can be approximated as such; your very existence would become torturous long before you hit 999. Then, when you finally do die after 999 years of living, you would die alone and psychologically broken. It certainly would be better to die at 20 than to live till you were 999. Of course, since no one is going to live until they're 999 (at least, not without a singularity occurring that greatly increases the average human lifespan), if we're staying within the bounds of reality, dying at 20 would suck.

I personally don't think anything would be worse than death. Even if I'm left alone, or go mad, or have to suffer for all eternity, I don't think it would be worse than complete nothingness.

But then again, if you live for all eternity you're already dead in a sense. Only death is eternal.
